SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man is dead after a hit-and-run driver struck him on Interstate 5 near Old Town overnight.Officers said the man was found lying dead in the middle of the highway at about 2:45 a.m. Saturday, prompting a closure of I-5 lanes for several hours.Only a bumper was found near the man, officers said. The man was not immediately identified.The suspected car, a 2004 Honda Accord, was located nearby at a gas station off the highway. Officer said they have the vehicle's license plate as well.The driver has yet to be located. 568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man accused of fatally stabbing his neighbor 33 times in Rancho Pe?asquitos last week pleaded not guilty to a murder charge.Police said Howard Forrest Lowe, 54, stabbed his neighbor, Richard Munsinger, 72, repeatedly in an unprovoked attack in Munsinger's garage in the 9500 block of High Park Lane.Following the attack, police said Lowe washed his hands and made a getaway on his bike before authorities caught up to him.RELATED: Police identify victim, suspect in deadly Rancho Pe?asquitos stabbingLowe faces 26 years to life in prison if convicted. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rolando resident is taking Halloween decor to new heights this month, with a NASA-themed display outside his home.Greg Jones is known in the neighborhood for his elaborate Halloween displays. Every year, locals expect an out-of-this-world display. This year, he took that reputation literally.Saturday night, dozens of neighbors and volunteers witnessed the inaugural rocket launch outside the home at 4648 Rolando Blvd., which took months to complete.The celebratory launch came complete with Jones in costume as an astronaut, a moon rover, space capsules, and a 30-foot rocket.The massive space display will be up through Halloween, with a "rocket launch" visible each night.In years past, Jones has delivered a heaping dose of Halloween to his street, bringing mammoth displays including a giant Octopus and King Kong to life over his home. 872

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man building his travel brand on Instagram said hackers tried to take it all away.Claudio Copiano Jr. runs the account @globalvagabonds. He posts pictures from his travels all around the world and advises people on how to travel on a budget. He’s traveled around the United States and about 30 other countries so far. Copiano has received partnerships with two countries to post about his travels. Eventually, he hopes to build it into a full-time income.“I want to show everybody what I do,” he said. Recently, Copiano received a notification from Instagram saying his email had been changed. “I clicked on ‘forgot my password,’ even though I know my password,” Copiano said.He still could not log in and started to panic. Then, he started to receive emails from someone who said he had hacked the account. The hacker demanded 0 in Bitcoin for the return of the account. Copiano said he sent dozens of emails to Instagram with no luck. “I got an email the first time from them saying that my account had been deleted and there was nothing that they could do,” Copiano said.Fortunately, he was able to figure out the new name of his account and determined it was still active. He said Instagram sent security codes to access his account but it was sent to the hacker’s email.Copiano is still not sure how he got his account back, but said after dozens of attempts, the security code was sent to his phone and he was able to access his account. He immediately changed his password and emphasized he did not pay the ransom. “You should never send money to a hacker because he’s not going to give you your account back,” Copiano said.Security expert Ted Harrington, executive partner with Independent Security Evaluators, agrees. “The reason you don’t pay the ransom is that [it] just further incentivizes other bad guys to keep doing this,” Harrington said. He also encourages people to contact the FBI if they believe they are a victim of a crime to file a report. Harrington also said two-factor authentication is vital to keeping an account safe. It is something Copiano did not have at the time, but added it right after he got his account back. “Two-factor authentication is essentially an additional way to verify who you are,” Harrington said. “Two-factor authentication is one of the most impactful security features that exist today.” A spokesperson with Instagram said they recently launched a new in-app experience making it easier for people to sign in and reclaim an account if it has been hacked. They sent the following information to Team 10:There are two ways to access this experience: 1) if we detect you are having trouble logging in (for e.g. if you repeatedly enter an incorrect password), or 2) by clicking “Need more help” on the login page.The experience will ask you to enter different types of information specific to your account, for example, the email address or phone number associated with your account, or the email or phone number you used when you signed up to Instagram.From there, we will send a 6 digit code to the contact information you select, which will allow you to regain access to your account. When you re-gain access to your account, we will take additional measures to ensure a hacker cannot use codes sent to your email address of phone number to access your account from a different device.This experience allows you to recover your account even if the account information has been changed by a hacker e.g. if the username and associated contact information is changed.The Instagram spokesperson also said if someone gains access through a compromised email account, people can follow steps detailed on the Help Center. 3709

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego couple is challenging a luxury carmaker after their BMW SUV suddenly caught on fire. The Pearsons said they bought a BMWx5 in August 2018 because they thought it would be safe and reliable. In December, they replaced the battery at BMW of Escondido. The next month, Lisa Pearson was driving on Interstate 15 when she noticed a warning light showing an airbag and parking brake error. She pulled over and noticed smoke coming from the back of the car.“It happened so fast,” Lisa said. A fire had started from the rear of her vehicle. A passing tow truck driver stopped to help put out the smoke and flames. Firefighters told her it could have been a different story if her children were inside in their car seats. “It was really nerve wracking,” Lisa said. “I was really thankful since I saw that the fire was happening in the back of the car that the kids weren’t there.”They said their SUV was a total loss. It was after the fire that the Pearsons ran into even more problems. When BMW of North America inspected the vehicle, they blamed it on “an improperly secured connection of the battery cable." In the letter to the Pearsons dated February 29, 2019, Executive Customer Care Representative Michael Pigoncelli wrote, “BMW NA cannot accept responsibility for any damage, injury, or loss associated with the fire…” BMW of Escondido disagreed with corporate’s allegations, writing to the Pearsons that “the repair was done as per the BMW guidelines.” “It just seems that they’re pointing fingers at each other. Nobody cares about us or the consumer,” said Ryan Pearson. “It was still under factory warranty,” Lisa added, saying they hadn't even had it for five months. “What’s it going to take? Does someone need to die?” The Pearsons are not the only local couple to have their BMW catch fire. In October 2017, Laura Ohme said her parked BMW started a fire at the Torrey Hills homes where she lived with her family.She was in the shower when she heard a strange noise. “I just hear this really really weird popping kind of noises,ll ” Ohme said. With her two kids asleep in their rooms, she threw on a towel to find out what was going on. She went downstairs and saw smoke. “The door itself [was] literally black and glowing.”Ohme grabbed her two children and ran outside the house. “The fire, it was raging at that point,” she said.Fire investigators determined her recently purchased 2014 BMWx5 started the fire. It was a certified pre-owned vehicle she bought just a few months before. Ohme said the vehicle was sitting in the garage and turned off at the time of the fire. "I didn’t even put 5,000 miles on the car,” Ohme said. She said BMW has had a “non-response” to the situation. “BMW is not taking responsibility,” she added.While the Ohmes and Pearsons’ fires started under different circumstances, they shared things in common. Both BMWx5s were recently purchased just a few months before the fires. They both had warranties and neither vehicle was under a recall.ABC News started investigating mysterious BMW fires in 2017. Like the Ohmes, dozens involved vehicles that were parked and turned off. Since then, about 1.6 million BMWs have been recalled for fire risk. A BMW spokesperson told Team 10: "BMW notifies owners of vehicles affected by a recall via registered mail to advise them that their vehicle is part of an upcoming recall campaign and what the next steps are. BMW recently expanded its recall notification system for vehicles built after 3/2016 to allow owners to also be notified through the BMW Connected App on their smartphone. A vehicle recall may require that a part be replaced or software be updated." A spokesperson for BMW of North America told Team 10 they could not comment on the Ohme’s situation “due to litigation.” The Ohmes' attorney told me they are preparing a class-action lawsuit for the damages caused by the BMW fires.“I was able to get myself and my children out safely, but at some point someone is going to die,” she said.Regarding the Pearsons, BMW of North America wrote on March 22nd that they still believe the Pearsons’ vehicle caught fire because of “an improperly tightened battery terminal after a recent battery service.” The spokesperson added: “BMW is currently working with the dealer and the owner to resolve the matter.”In an email on March 22nd, a few days after Team 10 first contacted BMW of Escondido, the service manager wrote he “sent the Pearsons claim and contact info for [their] insurance company” and instructed their insurance to settle her claim as quickly as possible. They still disagree with BMW of North America’s findings. “We can’t let this go on and hurt other people,” said Ryan.“You are saying you are a very high quality company that sells very luxury cars, and yet your cars are catching fire.
