More studies seem to indicate there is some connection between a person’s severity of COVID-19 symptoms and their blood type. However, experts agree more research is needed and these studies do not allow people with certain blood types to disregard pandemic safety precautions.The two latest studies, one from Denmark and one from Canada, both appear to show that people with blood type O may be slightly less vulnerable to COVID-19 and have a reduced chance of getting severely ill.In the Danish study, researchers looked at more than 7,400 people who tested positive for COVID-19. Of those, 38.4 percent had blood type O, while other research indicates that blood type makes up about 41.7 percent of the population.In the Canadian study, they looked at the length of hospital stays for 95 people critically ill with the coronavirus. They found the portion of patients who needed mechanical ventilation was higher in those with blood type A or AB when compared with a group of patients with blood type O or B.Researchers also found the blood type A or AB group had longer stays in the intensive care unit, a median of 13.5 days, compared to the other group with blood type O or B who had a median of 9 days."I don't think this supersedes other risk factors of severity like age and co-morbities and so forth,” Dr. Mypinder Sekhon, who is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Critical Care Medicine and Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia told CNN."If one is blood group A, you don't need to start panicking. And if you're blood group O, you're not free to go to the pubs and bars."Researchers say this information could be used in some way in regard to treatment of COVID-19. Both studies were published in the journal Blood Advances this week.Previous studies have indicated similar results in patients with blood type O.In July, a study looking at 1,600 patients in Spain and Italy showed slightly higher rates of severe respiratory failure in patients with blood type A compared to those with blood type O.Also this summer, the genealogy website 23andMe.com released data they collected from 750,000 participants who identified they have tested positive for COVID-19.“Individuals with O blood type are between 9-18% percent less likely than individuals with other blood types to have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the data,” a company statement said at the time. 2425

MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) - A plaque honoring Marines killed in a military training crash that happened 50 years ago at MCAS El Toro was unveiled at MCAS Miramar Wednesday."Knowing answers has really allowed us to come together," the granddaughter of Maj. Walter Zytkewicz, who was in the crash, said tearfully.Dozens of family members traveled to MCAS Miramar, where the squadron now resides, for the dedication.Pati Davis Ruane traveled from Georgia and still remembers the crash."I was 7 years old and we lived on base at El Toro, we saw the black smoke, playing around outside and was like, 'Hey mom look!' and she was like, 'Oh it's just the crash crew practicing,'" Ruane said. It wasn't the crash crew. A C-130 was completing touch-and-go practices and crashed violently, ultimately killing four of the five Marines on board.Her father, K.C. Davis, was the only one who saw his kids grow up, "I remember my mom going to three funerals in one day."This journey started in January 2019. Johnathan Keene often visited his cousin's grave at Arlington National Cemetery."I go up to visit him twice a year, typically Memorial Day and Veteran's Day," said Davis. Keene was in the neighborhood, Jan. 15, on his way to pick up his wife from the airport, and noticed Zytkewicz's grave next to the grave of his cousin, Capt. Robert Walls. Zytkewicz was in the Marines, like his cousin, and died the day before Walls. He said that "grabbed" him.Up until that day, Keene knew his cousin died in a military crash, but it wasn't spoken of at the dinner table. He knew there must be a connection to the two men, so he started digging. He found three other Marines were on the same training flight July 30, 1970: Staff Sgt. Kenneth Davis, 1st Lt. Roger W. Mullins, and Cpl. Kenneth Metzdorf."Major Zytkewicz was two months away from retiring," Keene said, adding that Zytkewicz was studying to become a realtor.Keene said Metzdorf wasn't supposed to be on the flight but, "called his best friend and said 'hey could you go on this flight for me today?' So they switched and that cost him [his life]."Keene tracked down the redacted incident report and filled in the gaps with interviews from witnesses and Marines who knew the men on board."Witnesses say they waited too late to pull the plane out of the angle of attack and the plane hit, bounced, flipped upside down, hit again, bounced in the air, the left wing fell off, all four props fell off. The plane landed right in the middle of the air field. Flames and fuel streamed down the runway, they said it was basically a long stream of fuel and fire," he said.Keene was amazed to learn his cousin and Metzdorf walked through the flames following the crash, "the report listed 80 percent - 90 percent coverage of third degree burns. I can't even imagine how he walked out," he said.Mullins was killed on impact, found 50 yards from the plane with a broken leg. Walls, Zytkewicz and Metzdorf died days later from their injuries. Keene said Walls died from burns in his lungs.Davis passed away in 2013.The exact cause was redacted in the report but Keene believes the Marine Corps wants to preserve the honor of the pilot and protect his family."After the crash, the material that made up Marine Corps and Navy flight suits was changed. They thought it was a flame retardant material, unfortunately it burned and melted to their skin," he said.Keene hopes these difficult discoveries will fuel Marines' admiration. To keep their memories alive, Keene created a plaque with the team's names. The plaque sits on the wall just inside the entrance to the squadron's historical room."Every other Marine that goes through that squadron will see that plaque and realize there's five men that in some way or another touched their lives from either a safety stand-point or history and lineology of VMGR-352," Keene said. 3858

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police in National City have arrested two suspects following a deadly 2015 shooting. According to the National City Police Department, Roger Hernandez, 30, and Luis Karam-Solis, 29, were arrested for the murder of Juan Munoz. The shooting happened in October of 2015. According to police, 18-year-old Munoz and his 17-year-old passenger drove to the 1600 block of Prospect Street after being followed by two men in a silver Nissan Altima. After the victims stopped, a Hispanic man approached their vehicle and fired several rounds. Munoz died on his way to the hospital and the 17-year-old passenger was shot in his thigh. MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) — Nearly 50 years after 15 men lost their lives at Naval Air Station Miramar, one man recounted his memories hoping to keep their story alive.Monday, Dec. 22, 1969 was Darwin Ludi's first day back from Christmas vacation. He was on rotation at the Balboa Naval Hospital in the morgue as a Navy Corpsman.When he walked in that morning he described the horrifying sight, "there were body bags along the hallway and I was like, 'What is going on?" He said the initial shock stayed with him for months and to this day is his strongest memory."We did the autopsies over a couple of days and the smell just lingered," he said somberly.Photos from MCAS Miramar's archives capture the panic and pain. Around 10:30 a.m. one article says the pilot of an F-8 Crusader ejected after reporting low oil pressure and engine seizure. He said he had no control over the plane.After ejecting, the plane veered right, according to the article, straight into a hangar.RELATED: MCAS Miramar crucial training hub, as political tensions rise around the world"They had, from what I understand, probably 60 some people working in the hangar at the time," Ludi said.The article described a 'big ball of flame belch[ed] from the doorway' then more explosions. "With all the like I said ordnances and it was fuel tanks in there, they were blowing up," Ludi said.The article stated at least 12 were injured from the crash, two jets were destroyed, another damaged extensively. The damage initially tallied around million.Fifty years later he hopes telling their story will keep those who made the ultimate sacrifice from being forgotten, "as long as I'm around hopefully things like this come out, because it's important. MONROE COUNTY, Penn. -- Punxsutawney Phil is a wanted mammal, and Pennsylvania law enforcement officials allege his crime is "deception."On Groundhog Day, Phil saw his shadow, declaring to the world there’d be six more weeks of winter.The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office issue is simple, according to the wanted poster posted on Facebook: It's been more than six weeks since his prediction, and snow's still falling.Phil said winter would be over by March 16, but by the second day of spring, the county was in the middle of “yet another snowstorm.”For those on the lookout, Phil is a 22-inch-long male, weighing around 20 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
