SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A plan to permanently remove the traffic along Normal Street in Hillcrest and replace it with a promenade will be voted on Tuesday. If approved, the westside traffic lanes would become a pedestrian walkway with dedicated bike lanes. It would also make room for the weekly Hillcrest farmers market and other events. “They call it a promenade but where are people promenading to,” says Linda Hanna, owner of Salon Antoine. Hanna has owned the business near the corner of Normal Street and University Avenue for almost 20 years. “We are in favor of something like this, but we need to think it through.”Other business owners are worried because the project would eliminate a driveway to a nearby shopping center.“If you don’t close that driveway, you have a driveway going right to the park, and that’s a real problem,” says Benjamin Nicholls, Executive Director of the Hillcrest Business Association. To add space to the east side lanes, some parking spaces will be moved. The Hillcrest Business Association says there are plans to add dozens of parking spaces near Lincoln Avenue. The Uptown Planners will vote on the project Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Hillcrest Business Association will be holding an event before the vote to update members of the community on the project. 1296

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  Pacific Trails Middle School student Kevin Luo has been crowned the winner of the 2018 countywide spelling bee.The 8th grader won the bee at 12:30 p.m. after a grueling three and a half hours of spelling. This year's winning word was gradine, which is "a low step or ledge, especially one at the back of an altar."Last year's winner was also from Pacific Trails Middle School. Yash Hande advanced to the 90th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a man they say disappeared from a San Diego assisted living facility Sunday morning and hasn’t returned.According to police, 81-year-old Gilbert Trevisio was last seen at the residence located on the 4000 block of Marine View Drive around 9:50 Sunday morning.Trevisio has dementia and believes he lives in Yuma, Arizona, police say. Trevisio has been reported missing in the past and was located downtown.Trevisio is described as a Hispanic man, five feet, six inches tall with grey hair and blue eyes.He was last seen wearing a blue shirt, grey sweatpants and black tennis shoes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – While 28,000 doses of the vaccine might sound like a lot, the county says it still won’t be enough to cover health care workers at the top of the list to get it.It’s a start, but immunologist Dr. Robert Schooley says we still have a long way to go.“It’s going to take a while but at least now we understand what the endpoint will be,” said Schooley.RELATED: How a COVID-19 vaccine will be distributed to San Diego's medical workersAccording to San Diego County, the initial shipment of 28,000 vaccines will only cover 72% of the top-tier health are workers who need it. That’s not enough for long-term care residents and staff who are also in the phase 1A top-tier to receive it.The shipment will only cover the first of two doses necessary for the Pfizer vaccine. The second doses will come in subsequent shipments.While there won’t be enough doses for all the front-line workers at UCSD, it is giving them hope.“The good news is we’ll be getting quite a few doses of the vaccine," Schooley says. “We’ll be getting farther down the list than we thought we were going to get.”The next hurdle for the vaccine is gaining widespread public trust.“These vaccines have been in tens-of-thousands of people and the FDA has gone over the data extremely carefully,” said Schooley. “I certainly would have no qualms myself about getting vaccinated this afternoon.”Schooley says about 70% of the population would need to get vaccinated to reach herd immunity. He estimated that could take up to 9 months.The county expects the next shipment of vaccines in three to four weeks. 1592
