SINGAPORE, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- A Singapore start-up firm has devised an innovative application to allow phone users to have access to their positioning information within buildings, where traditional global positioning system has often proved inaccurate, local daily Business Times reported on Monday.The firm YFind Positioning System feels that the application can help turn Singapore into the world's first location- intelligent city.Ting See Ho, co-founder of the firm, said the application works by first verifying the GPS coordinates to identify the building the user is in, and then collecting RSSI (received signal strength information) readings off WiFi access points within the building.The information is then sent by the phone to the central positioning server for comparison against records of the radio map of the building, which is calibrated earlier by the company.Ting said the RSSI readings continually fluctuates, making it difficult to estimate a position. This is where YFind Positioning System steps in with its patent-pending probabilistic algorithms to help accurately estimated the user's indoor positions.Once the phone application determines the location, then, it is able to map a course for a shop or other destination within the building where the user wants to go."You can think of it as creating an 'indoor GPS' environment in the buildings where satellite signals cannot be read," Ting said.He said that more than ten organizations in Singapore have approached the company to discuss deployment and partnerships and that it has begun work on three proof-of-concepts.The company's immediate goal is to make Singapore the world's first location-intelligent city before going to other cities, he said.

BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Study found that women who took multivitamins may actually be at risk, media reports on Wednsday.Women who took the dietary supplements vitamin B6, folic acid, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron and multivitamins had a higher risk of death than women who did not.The new study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, examined more than 38,000 women aged 55 and older who took part in the Iowa Women's Health Study, which started in the mid 1980s. Researchers found the vitamins did nothing to reduce the risk of death and that most supplements have no positive effect on women's health.The study did not distinguish if the women in the study took the vitamins to fight diseases or to maintain health.Vitamin experts say the best way to make sure you are getting all necessary vitamins is to eat a well-balanced diet. The vitamins people take do not  depend on personal preference.

BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- In response to the government's call to build a greener economy, China's transport authorities have taken a slew of measures to promote energy saving and emission reductions in the sector.Under the sector's funding policy unveiled earlier this year, 122 emission-cutting projects in the industry have received financial support totalling 250 million yuan (39.3 million U.S. dollars). Encouraged by the special funds, another 8.06 billion yuan in investment went to the projects, according to He Jianzhong, spokesman for the Ministry of Transport (MOT).The projects were estimated to be able to save 315,000 metric tons of coal equivalent, replace 224,000 metric tons of fuel oil and reduce carbon dioxide emission by 1.14 million metric tons, He said.Meanwhile, the MOT has launched nationwide programs to promote low-carbon traffic. UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's Permanent Representative to the UN Li Baodong said here Thursday that caution should be called for in metering out sanctions in international affairs.Li made the remarks when addressing a Security Council open debate on the question of justice and rule of law."We are in favor of improving the UN sanction regime on the basis of extensive consultations so as to improve its credibility, procedures and establishing effective monitoring mechanisms and to establish strict criteria, define timelines, " Li said."Sanctions should be only carried out on basis of facts and evidence. Double standards must be avoided. Impacts against civilian lives and social economic development must be minimized," the ambassador said.Stressing that the UN chart and the fundamental principles of international law as established in it should be upheld, Li said rule of law in international relations should be strengthened.The Charter as well as principles of international law established in it constitute the call of rule of law in international relations and represents the bedrock for developing rule of law in international relations, he said."In the conduct of international relations and international affairs, adherence to the Charter and other fundamental principles of international law, such as respect for national sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, fulfillment in international obligation in real earnest is the essence of promotion of international rule of law," said Li.According to the Charter, UN Security Council resolutions constitute the integral part of international rule of law. WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday approved HEMACORD, the first licensed hematopoietic progenitor cells-cord cell therapy.HEMACORD is indicated for use in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation procedures in patients with disorders affecting the blood forming system. For example, cord blood transplants have been used to treat patients with certain blood cancers and some inherited metabolic and immune system disorders."The use of cord blood hematopoietic progenitor cell therapy offers potentially life-saving treatment options for patients with these types of disorders," said Karen Midthun, director of FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, in a statement.HEMACORD contains hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) from human cord blood. Cord blood is one of three sources of HPCs used in transplants. The other two are bone marrow and peripheral blood. Once these HPCs are infused into patients, the cells migrate to the bone marrow where they divide and mature. When the mature cells move into the bloodstream they can partially or fully restore the number and function of many blood cells, including immune function.
