BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce advised representatives from China's companies to hold off traveling to southern Kyrgyzstan for investment and trade as the deadly ethnic clashes there have killed at least 82 people and wounded 1,000 as of Saturday. The ministry suggested Chinese people and Chinese-funded companies in Kyrgyzstan monitor developments and take precautionary measures against personal injuries and property losses, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.Kyrgyzstan's interim government has declared a state of emergency and a 24-hour curfew in the southern city of Osh, where riots erupted on Thursday when quarrels between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbek escalated into running street battles.

CHENGDU, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) - A panda cub born Friday afternoon at a breeding center in southwest China is just another panda bear born at the center. What makes her unique is her mother.Jini, the panda mother, gave birth to the female cuba at the age of 17. She is compared to a human in her sixties, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Sichuan Province said in a statement. The female cub weighed 125 grams. She was born at 14:41 p.m., four hours after Jini went into labour. Both the mother and cub are in good health, said the statement.Jini, a resident of Beijing Zoo, was sent to the Wolong center this March for the cub-birth purpose because the research center has developed expertise in breeding techniques. With a 20-year breeding history, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center is home to the world's largest captive panda population. It has helped Beijing Zoo and Chongqing Zoo and many zoos in other countries in breeding and feeding pandas. The new cub is Jini's second. It is the eleventh cub born at the Wolong center this year."Pandas come into heat in the spring and give birth in autumn. This is the main reason for the panda 'baby boom'," said Dang Chunxiang, an expert with the Wolong Center.More than 10 other pandas are expected to give birth over the next one or two months at the Wolong center.Jini delivered her first cub "Qingqing" in 2007 when she was thirteen and a half years old, which was itself rare amongst pandas. She also entered record books with her pregnancy that lasted 324 days. Generally, pandas deliver in 120 -150 days. The length of a panda's pregnancy depends on its health and nutrition level, according to experts.About 1,600 giant pandas are living in the wilds in China. Sichuan Province and the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu are the home to most of them. Another 290 pandas are in captive-bred programs worldwide, mostly in mainland China.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI), one of the main gauges of inflation, rose to its highest level this year boosted by rising food prices. The CPI gained 3.3 percent in July from a year earlier, 0.4 percentage points higher than in June, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Wednesday. It has exceeded the 3-percent full-year target ceiling the government set in March.Food prices, which account for about a third of the weighting in calculating the CPI, climbed 6.8 percent in July, compared with June's increase of 5.7 percent. The country's CPI gained 2.7 percent year on year in the first seven months of this year, 0.1 percentage points higher than the January-June figure, the NBS said. The producer price index, a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, grew 4.8 percent year on year in July, 1.6 percentage points lower than in June, the NBS said.

BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The Supreme People's Court (SPC) of China on Tuesday urged courts across the country to accept scrutiny by the press and general public. The courts must constantly listen to the public so they can carry out their work in a better way, Shen Deyong, executive vice president of the SPC, told a national conference on the publicity work of courts. After hailing achievements of the courts in providing information to the public, Shen said some courts did not pay enough attention to public opinion."The public are paying more attention to court work, their expectations are growing. They want to know more, participate more and supervise more," he said.Shen urged courts to disclose information on major issues in a timely fashion, so as to avoid public suspicion and damage to judicial authority. The Supreme People's Court will train spokespeople and publicity officials of courts nationwide in the second half of the year.
