SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Portland nonprofit is spreading hope and strength where it's needed most, to children and teens battling cancer, living with special needs, or coping after trauma.The Capes and Crowns Foundation gives these warriors a chance to live out their superhero fantasy for a day, dressing them up in the hero, princess or athlete of their choice.With the help of imagination and Photoshop, the result is a captivating photo the family can cherish forever. “It reminds these kids they are the real superheroes," said Kylie Cole, Founder and President of the foundation.Because many of the children have a terminal illness, Cole says every photo shoot must be perfect.Her team goes the extra mile, not only with staged photo shoots but also photographing hospice sessions and memorial services.“It's very obvious, this is what my entire life was meant for," said Cole.Capes and Crowns is touring the country to reach as many kids as possible.For the Los Angeles/San Diego trip, costumes alone cost ,000.The team hopes people watching will be inspired by their mission and donate to help more kids live out their wildest imaginations.  1165

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A principal in La Jolla apologized after sending an email to parents she says unintentionally reinforced stereotypes.La Jolla Elementary School Principal Donna Tripi last month sent an email after two parents expressed concern over a man they believed was following a parent and her two children out of a Starbucks and across the street.In the email, Tripi described the man as “an African American male, about 30 years old, about 6’1” tall, wearing a hooded sweatshirt.” Tripi added in an apology email that she was passing along the description she was given.RELATED: La Jolla students, teachers gather to battle bullying on campus“My email was a mistake. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new poll shows many San Diegans would “definitely” or “probably” get a COVID-19 vaccine if it were available to them at little or no cost.An ABC 10News/San Diego Union-Tribune scientific poll recently asked 500 San Diego adults about their thoughts on a potential coronavirus vaccine, including who should get a vaccine first and their feelings towards vaccinations in general.Among the questions participants were asked: “A vaccine for the Coronavirus may soon be available to the public. If clinical trials go well, and a vaccine is available to you that is either free or costs just a few dollars, would you definitely get the vaccine? Probably get the vaccine? Probably not get the vaccine? Or definitely not get the vaccine?”The poll shows 38% of San Diegans would definitely get the vaccine; 32% would probably get the vaccine; 12% would probably not get it; 10% would definitely not get it; 8% are not sure.The release of the poll comes on the same day biotech company Moderna announced its COVID-19 vaccine candidate is 94.5% effective.The company’s chief medical officer, Dr. Tal Zaks, called the news one of the greatest moments of his life, adding, “It is absolutely amazing to me to be able to develop this vaccine and see the ability to prevent symptomatic disease with such high efficacy."Moderna reported no major side effects, and that unlike Pfizer’s vaccine announcement last week, Moderna’s vaccine does not require extreme refrigeration temperatures -- something many experts agreed would be a significant advantage for distribution.The federal government has said the coronavirus vaccine would be free, and some experts have suggested that with the FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization -- which both companies are expected to apply for in the next few weeks -- there could be enough doses manufactured to immunize 20 million people by early next year.Other poll questions that San Diegans were asked: 1948

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A juvenile was arrested Wednesday for allegedly making a threat against a San Diego Unified School District high school.The juvenile was arrested at Serra High School for the alleged threat, according to SDUSD. The suspect told school police the comment was not meant to be taken seriously. While police deemed the threat non-credible, they determined the comment meant the definition of a criminal threat.The language of the threat and how it was issued was not immediately clear.RELATED: DA: Nine minors charged in recent threats to local schoolsClasses at Serra High were held on a normal scheduled Wednesday despite the report. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died Saturday night after being shot during a fight in Lincoln Park, San Diego Police say.According to police, two men were involved in a fight on the 300 block of Euclid Avenue around 9 p.m.During the fight, police say one of the men produced a handgun when both men were shot.Officers were called to the scene after receiving reports of gunshots heard in the area.
