SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wednesday, the Marine Corps Recruit Depot reported that 26 additional Marine Corps Recruits had been sickened by E. coli.Currently 214 recruits among the more than 5500 recruits in training at both MCRD and the command’s field training facilities at Camp Pendleton are symptomatic of E. coli.The total number dropped from a reported 302 Tuesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With so many families feeling the financial impact of COVID-19 this year, a Linda Vista family is hoping to quietly bring some holiday cheer to neighbors by taking on the role of Secret Santa.Jaelyn,13, Jayda, 11, and Jessica, 4, will be doing plenty of wrapping this holiday season. Their mom Rhian and her partner, Jeff Leardini, are determined to deliver some holiday cheer."There are so many families that are worried about how they're going to make it to tomorrow. Christmas is the last thing on their mind. We want to take that worry away," said Leardini.Leardini posted on the Nextdoor app an offer to buy and wrap a Christmas toy for any neighbors in need, no strings attached. Leardini, a sales manager for a pet supply company, and his girlfriend, a nurse, kept their jobs during the pandemic."We feel very fortunate and want to help people," said Leardini.During this holiday season, his family are now playing the part of Secret Santa."We just thought there are people that might be embarrassed to go to organizations, so we thought can we help them without them having to go through a lot of red tape," said Leardini.So far, a handful of neighbors have responded to his offer"It's been really emotional reading the messages," said Leardini.Some are dealing with lost jobs, others with COVID-related health issues. Those families will soon receive something extra under the tree."Want to deliver smiles to them, even if it's just for one day. Their children will be happy, and that in turn will deliver joy to their family. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two San Diego-based Marines are under investigation after posting a video that appears to show them in "blackface."According to KPBS, Zach Highfield originally posted the video on Snapchat. Highfield's Instagram page shows him in his Marine uniform. The video shows Highfield and another man in uniform with their faces blackened. One of them is heard saying "blackface." The other man puts on his cap and salutes. At one point, one of them uses a racist slang used to describe African Americans. The video shared on social media, with many people on Twitter, saying the Marines should be kicked out of the military. Bishop Cornelius Bowser is the pastor of Charity Apostolic Church. He agrees. "It seems as though, whether it's military or someone in the community or working for a company, they should have learned by now that this is unacceptable," said Bishop Bowser. Highfield told a KPBS reporter, they were wearing charcoal masks used to clean pores. He said they didn't mean to offend anyone. 10News tried calling Highfield at the number posted on his Instagram page, but his voicemail was full and he did not respond to texts. Bishop Bowser believes the two knew exactly what they were doing. "We pay our tax dollars for them to protect and serve our country and this is not it, right there, that kind of display, that kind of character should not be allowed." A spokesman with The Third Marine Aircraft Wing, based at Miramar Air Station, wouldn't release any details, but said the matter is under investigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— As Governor Jerry Brown visited Ground Zero for the Camp Fire in Paradise, a San Diego woman is doing the same. Corine Finnigan has more than 100 family members who lived in Paradise, and is now driving a truckload of supplies and cash to help them. Her adult niece, Christine Blackburn told 10news about her harrowing escape through the flames. While the fire was inching closer to her car, she shot video. In it, you can hear her trying to comfort her four and six-year-old children, sitting frightened in the backseat. But this escape story is not unique to Blackburn. In fact, her aunt Cynthia Watts also narrowly escaped the fire.“That was the most terrifying experience of my life,” Watts said.The taxi driver lived on the East side of town, where the fire began. Immediately, she packed her car and drove south. Minutes later, she was in bumper to bumper traffic. "I don't think we moved an entire inch in an entire hour,” Watts recalled.She tried driving on the Northbound lanes on Skyway Street, but the jam never let up. So she abandoned her car and ran for her life."I just started hoofing it,” she said. Watts walked and walked, passing rows of cars on the town's main road. She was even offered rides from drivers stuck on the road but refused. That was until she heard a co-worker screaming to get into his truck. The next thing she knew, they were in Chico, with absolutely nothing.“Thank you, God. I got out of there, in the nick [of time],” she said. This escape story is also not unique to Watts. In fact, she has nearly 100 extended family members in the small city, all who are now homeless."They have nothing,” Finnigan said. Finnigan is Watt's youngest sister of thirteen children. While she moved to San Diego a few years ago, Finnigan spent most of her life in Paradise. This year, she and her husband Bryan are spending their 22nd wedding anniversary, driving up supplies to her family.“We look like hoarders now, with bags and bags and bags of clothes, shoes, towel, and toys,” Finnigan said. With the help of her friends and co-workers, she was able to collect the donations, including ,000 in cash for the survivors in the Camp Fire. One miracle, Watts said, was that everyone in their family managed to escape in time.  2336
