A police body-camera recording released Wednesday shed more light on the house party that earned six Miami University students citations for violating COVID-19 health orders over Labor Day weekend.There were 20 people inside the house on Saturday afternoon, when an Oxford police officer arrived to break up the party. In the recording, he approaches a group of young men sitting outside and asks to speak to someone who lives in the house.One steps forward and admits he knows he’s broken the state’s rule against gatherings larger than 10 people.The officer takes his ID, runs it through a police database and discovers that its owner had tested positive for COVID-19.This exchange follows:Officer: I’ve never seen this before. There’s an input on the computer that you tested positive for COVID.Student: Yes.Officer: When was this?Student: This was a week ago.Officer: Are you supposed to be quarantining?Student: Yeah. He and Miami University president Gregory Crawford attribute the school’s cases — 1,084 of them, most diagnosed in the last two weeks — to off-campus house parties exactly like the one recorded over the weekend.Although Miami delayed the start of in-person instruction, Crawford said upperclassmen moved back into town in August and began partying when they got there."Those early weekends in August, we saw an uptick in parties and gatherings,” he said. “I think that’s what is responsible for the surge today.”It’s a surge that is, for now, unique among schools in the Cincinnati area. MONTPELIER, Vt. – Among the maple trees in west Vermont, on the outskirts of Montpelier, sits Morse Farm and Sugar Works. Elliott Morse and his brother Burr Morse run the farm. Their families have been farmers in the region for seven generations. “We were dairy farmers for most of those generations,” said Burr. “My father didn’t like dairy farming, that just wasn’t what you wanted to do.” Under Harry Morse senior, Burr’s father, the farm focused on tapping maple. When it was Burr’s turn to run things, he thought the land was suited to do something else too. The farm had enough land and the right topography for cross country skiing. “This was a junction here and really the main entrance to the ski system,” Burr explained as he walked the farm’s ski trails. “Skiing livened the place up in the winter.” Cross-country skiing on Morse Farm became a popular local attraction in Montpelier for more than two decades. “Families had fun and year after year they’d come up to ski,” Burr added. However, Morse Farm had to close its ski trails last year as the weather has become more unpredictable, and the snowfall amounts have been inconsistent. Over the past decade, Vermont has had almost 200 inches of snow one year, and barely 50 inches the next. “It’s not easy, it’s not easy at all. Skiing was with us for 20 years and now it’s like it died,” said Burr. The change has been tough for Burr Morse to accept, but necessary. Now he can focus all his attention to maple sugaring in hopes of minimizing the unpredictable weather’s effect on that business. “There are a lot of sugar maker walking around like, there’s not a problem. Nothing’s wrong, nothing’s wrong. I don’t have the patience for that,” he said. “I am a realist. I have my eyes open on the farm and darn it all I am concerned.” He’s concerned over how long technology, like vacuum pumps hooked onto maple trees, will work to draw sap from the trees when the weather is unseasonable. But he’s also concerned over how many more generations of the Morse family will be able to enjoy running the family farm. “I have just one grandchild 6-year-old girl and we love her to pieces and if she wants to carry on this place someday that would be great,” Burr said. “But will the place be here for her if she makes that choice I don't know and that's what I worry about.” 2347

The United States Marshals Service announced that its Operation Safety Net has concluded and a total of 35 missing children were recovered in northeast Ohio as a result.The U.S. Marshals Service, working with state and local partners over the past month to locate and recover missing children and teens from the Cleveland area, were able to recover 35 of the 40 missing children referred to them for the operation.According to the U.S. Marshals Service, around 20% of the recoveries were tied to human trafficking cases and were subsequently referred to the Human Trafficking Task Force in Cuyahoga County.U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Ohio Pete Elliott said the operation's success exceeded expectations."When I went into this, I thought if we had one or two, it was going to be a success," said Elliott, "and now after the first month, just look at how many are out there."As a result of the operation, The United States Marshals for the Northern District of Ohio has created a permanent Missing Child Unit throughout the 40 counties within the district.“We are proud to assist in Operation Safety Net and I commend the United States Marshals Service for their hard work and dedication toward locating these children," Chief John Majoy of Newburg Heights said in a press release. "Many times, they do not know they are a victim and this operation offers hope, freedom and safety they would not otherwise have."There are currently 382 open missing persons cases according to a federal clearinghouse. More than 120 of those cases are from northeast Ohio."There are so many missing people out there it is mind boggling," said Elliott. He said the agency received additional funding for Operation Safety Net from Washington. Elliott is hopeful now that the missing persons unit will be permanent, the funding will too.Elliott said plans are to add coordinators in Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown and Toledo to help close missing persons cases referred by local law enforcement.Since 2005, the U.S. Marshal's Service said it's helped recover more than 1,500 missing kids.While the operation has come to a close, the U.S. Marshals Service said it will work over the next several weeks to recover the five remaining children whose missing persons cases were referred to them.Ja'Naiya Scott-Lee, 16, was reported missing on Aug. 23 from Cleveland. She is described as standing 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds. She is believed to be in Euclid. Two sisters, 15-year-old Yalonda Bates and 17-year-old Leantwana Bates, have been missing since April 18. Leantwana is described as standing 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 135 pounds, while Yalonda is described as standing 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 100 pounds. The sisters are believed to be near Cleveland’s East Side. Alicia Jackson, 16, was reported missing from Berea.
