Roseanne Barr's firing from her namesake show is definitely not the first instance of a celebrity being removed for offensive comments or acts.Other high profile cases include Kathy Griffin, Phil Robertson, Paula Deen, Charlie Sheen, Gilbert Gottfried and Isaiah Washington. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- California's top public health official has resigned.Dr. Sonia Angell is out as director and state public health officer for the California Department of Public Health. Her resignation letter released late Sunday doesn't explain her departure. It comes just days after the state announced a fix for a glitch that caused a lag in reporting coronavirus test information used to make decisions about reopening businesses and schools. The state's Health and Human Services Agency has chosen two people to fill Angell's positions. One will be the acting health director, and the other will be the acting public health officer. 654

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- A bill that would allow “bad officers” to be permanently stripped of their badges failed to pass the California Legislature. The measure was one of the year's top policing reform bills after the death of George Floyd while in police custody earlier this year.Law enforcement organizations opposed the bill because they said the proposed system is biased and lacks basic due process protections. The Legislature gave final approval to bills that would ban police officers from using choke holds and carotid holds and require independent investigations when police kill unarmed civilians. Those bills now go to Gov. Gavin Newsom's desk. 666

RICHMOND, Va. — There has been a major drop in the number of people behind bars in the U.S. An analysis by The Marshall Project and The Associated Press found that between March and June, more than 100,000 people were released from state and federal prisons. That's a drop of 8%. By comparison, the Vera Institute of Justice found that for all of 2019, the state and federal prison population fell by 2.2%. As the U.S. struggles with the coronavirus, prison reform advocates are urging releases to halt its spread in correctional facilities. But their release, and how they behave when they’re out, is likely to affect the larger criminal justice reform movement. 671
