SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego federal judge has again denied a Chula Vista church's request to challenge the state's COVID-19-related restrictions on indoor worship services.South Bay United Pentecostal Church, which lost a challenge to the restrictions earlier this year when the case went before the U.S. Supreme Court, filed an amended complaint this summer in its ongoing lawsuit arguing that California's restrictions on indoor services and singing are unconstitutional.U.S. District Judge Cynthia Bashant, who denied the church's request for a preliminary injunction in May, also denied South Bay United's latest request in a written order signed Wednesday.Bashant echoed much of her previous reasoning in denying the church's request, though South Bay United's latest complaint and her ruling took into account the shifting state of the virus locally.South Bay United argued in court papers that the state's "scientific pronouncements" are "largely baseless," as by "all reasonable scientific measurements," the COVID-19 health emergency "has ended."Bashant disagreed with the church's assessment of the current picture, and wrote that limitations to indoor worship attendance do not restrict one's ability to attend religious gatherings, as long as they are held outdoors.The judge wrote that the current COVID-19 situation in San Diego County holds that worship services may be held outdoors, with singing and chanting permitted. Indoor worship is limited to 100 people or 25% of building capacity -- whichever is fewer -- with singing and chanting prohibited.The church has argued that outdoor worship and services held over video-conferencing are "inadequate substitutes" and that the public health orders prohibit the church "from holding the services mandated by scripture."It also argued that California arbitrarily allowed certain sectors considered essential to stay open and conduct indoor operations, while discriminating against religious institutions.Bashant disagreed that public health officials have shown a pattern of discriminatory enforcement of COVID-19 health orders against religious institutions.She wrote that through Aug. 26, the county served 10 cease-and-desist orders or compliance letters to businesses or other entities, three of which were places of worship.Additionally, she wrote that through Aug. 26, 144 citations were issued for health order violations, none of which were to places of worship or people engaged in religious services. 2485

Gavin Newsom will concluded his "California for All'' Health Care Tour in San Diego Saturday by holding a rally to reaffirm his position on women's reproductive health services.Newsom had been on on the promotional tour since Tuesday, stopping in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sacramento to discuss the health care initiatives in his proposed budget for the 2020 fiscal year.According to Newsom, his proposed initiatives would lower health care costs, expand on former President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act and make progress toward a single-payer health care system.The program would also bring back the Obamacare-era healthcare mandate that penalizes anyone who doesn't have healthcare coverage. Should state legislators approve Newsom's proposed budget, it would expand Medi-Cal coverage to adults ages 19-25 in California without illegally, offer subsidies to middle-income families with private health insurance and allocate 0 million for reproductive and sexual health care education and programs."No state has more at stake on the issue of health care. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities asked the public to keep an eye out for a missing Lemon Grove teenager with a history of running away from home.The last known sighting of Alonna Wintland, 15, was on July 31, when she left her home in the 8000 block of Lemon Grove Way in a car driven by an unidentified man, according to sheriff's officials.At the time, Alonna, who did not take her cellphone or debit card with her when she disappeared, was wearing beige shorts, a white shirt and sandals. Her whereabout since have been unknown.Alonna is white, 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs about 235 pounds. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A young man who was seen being repeatedly struck by San Diego police officers in a widely viewed social-media video was sentenced to four years and four months in prison Friday for resisting arrest and unrelated robbery and burglary cases.Trenelle D. Cannon, 20, pleaded guilty last month to charges stemming from a video clip showing a group of officers punching him during a struggle on a South Bay roadside in early May. The 12-second video sparked public debate, with critics saying the officers used excessive force in arresting Cannon. Cannon pleaded guilty to resisting arrest for the confrontation, as well as robbery in an unrelated San Diego case stemming from 2017, in which prosecutors said he stole a necklace valued at ,000 from someone, then fled from pursuing officers, leaving the chain behind.Cannon received a three-year prison term Friday for the robbery, as well as eight months for the resisting arrest case and another eight months for a South Bay burglary case.RELATED: Watch: San Diego Police respond to violent arrest videoSan Diego County Superior Court Judge Polly H. At that point, police said Cannon burst out of the vehicle and tackled the patrolman, prompting several other officers to pile onto Cannon as one of his companions videotaped the unfolding fracas from inside the car."Believing Cannon possibly had another weapon, responding officers used a combination of physical force and distraction strikes to take him into custody while continuously giving him orders to surrender,'' Nisleit said."Cannon refused to cooperate and struggled to keep his hands in front of his body. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Arizona man who carried out a series of knifepoint rapes in the city of San Diego 24 years ago, as well as two rapes in Riverside County in 2002 and 2004, was sentenced Thursday to 50 years to life in prison.Christopher Vanbuskirk, 47, of Goodyear, pleaded guilty last year to six rape counts for attacking the women on four occasions between August and November of 1995 in San Diego, as well as two women in the Coachella Valley area of Riverside County in March 2002 and November 2004.Prosecutors said the four San Diego cases occurred twice in the Tierrasanta neighborhood, once in Pacific Beach and once near San Diego Mesa College.
