BEIJING, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, on Saturday voiced strong protest against Washington's plan to sell a package of arms worth about 6.4 billion U.S. dollars to Taiwan, urging the U.S. side to immediately withdraw the wrong decision. The U.S. government announced the plan "in disregard of the strong opposition and repeated representations from the Chinese side," said a leading official of the NPC Foreign Affairs Committee."We are firmly opposed to that (the plan), and has lodged severe representations to the U.S. side," the official said.Such a move is gravely against the three joint communiques between China and the United States, especially the "Aug. 17" communique, in which the United States promised not to seek to carry out a long-term policy of arms sales to Taiwan, and intended to gradually reduce arms sales to the island. The plan endangers China's national security and efforts for peaceful reunification. It also harms Sino-U.S. relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. "The Chinese people are strongly indignant about it," the official said. The arms package would include 114 Patriot (PAC-3) anti-missile systems, 60 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, 12 Harpoon Block II Telemetry missiles, 2 Osprey Class mine hunting ships and a command and control enhancement system, according to a Pentagon website.

BEIJING, March 16 (Xinhua)-- The China "Summer Davos" summit, due to be held in September in the north China city of Tianjin, will again focus on sustainability and the green economy, said Andre Schneider, managing director of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Tuesday. The detailed agenda would be designed to meet the changing new growth context with more discussion of new business models and technical innovations, Schneider said in a press briefing in Beijing. The "Summer Davos" 2010, or the fourth Annual Meeting of the New Champions, would be a continuation of the third-round meeting last year, which had focused on the way out of crisis, said Schneider. With the theme, "Driving Growth Through Sustainability," this year's summit, from Sept. 13 to 15, is expected to attract more than 1,500 participants, including business executives, politicians, economists and scientists from about 90 countries. On the global economy picture, Schneider said the deep financial and structural roots of the "Great Recession" made it difficult to predict the shape of future growth.Schneider said the future also remained unclear for advanced economies, which the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development forecast, would see a possible 10-percent unemployment rate in the second half of this year.Though the emerging and developing economies accounted for almost 50 percent of global GDP, their growth was not decoupled from the rest of the world, said Schneider.

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has reiterated his country's support for the Copenhagen Accord and China's commitments to addressing climate change. In separate replies to letters from Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Wen said the Copenhagen Accord resulting from the UN climate change conference in the Danish capital last year laid the foundation for advancing international cooperation on climate change and pointed the direction for future negotiations. The document reflected the political will of all parties to actively tackle climate change, upheld the dual-track negotiating mechanism of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol, and reaffirmed the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" for developed and developing countries, Wen wrote in the letters dated Friday. He said China would do its best to honor its commitments on climate change, including a reduction of carbon dioxide emission intensity per unit of GDP by 40 to 45 percent by 2020 against 2005 levels, an increase to 15 percent of non-fossil fuels in the country's total primary energy mix by 2020, and an increase of 40 million hectares of forest and 1.3 billion cubic meters of forest volume by 2020 from 2005 levels.Wen said China will continue to play an active and constructive role and work jointly with the international community for a meaningful conclusion of the Bali Roadmap negotiations at the Mexico climate talks with a comprehensive, effective and binding outcome that will reinforce the implementation of the convention and the protocol.
