SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The coronavirus has touched the lives of people of all ages, but none more than seniors. Despite ongoing challenges, residents at a senior living facility are finding ways to stay positive. You can’t see their smiles but you can tell they’re there.Residents at Belmont Village Senior Living in Sabre Springs are not only adapting to the pandemic, they’re overcoming it through "The Joys of Life."Don Bodow started the program to spread happiness and stimulate minds. Through a series of puzzles, games, and activities he helps fellow residents stay positive.“I’m making other people happy,” said Bodow. “Giving them joy simply makes me feel good.”Although they can’t be with their families during the pandemic, many are happy right where they are.“The joy of life is in all of us,” said Bodow. “We may not realize it and it needs to be brought out. You need to accept the fact that there are joys in your life.”One of his most active students is 98-year-old Pauline Hayes.“Some of those words are misspelled and you’re challenged to find them,” said Hayes. “I love doing Joys of Life.”Hayes attends every session and credits the class for keeping her sharp. When we asked her about the secret to life she replied, “keeping positive and keeping active.”Bodow says the program was built on his own experience after spending two months in a coma.“I lost all my memory, all my muscle mass. I had to learn how to walk again,” said Bodow. He’s made an incredible comeback while helping others along the way.“This is never about me,” said Bodow. “It’s making the other people happy, giving them a sense of a full life.”Through the challenges of COVID-19, Joys of Life is touching the lives of residents and staff like never before.Bodow has a collection of puzzles and games on his website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Teenage cancer survivors from Rady Chidlren's Hospital celebrated an "unforgettable" event. The annual Unforgettable Prom brought teens battling cancer out for a night of dancing and celebration — a night many of the teens miss at school while they continue to fight illness. Now in its 13th year, the dance has helped teens take a moment to celebrate that special night in every teenager's life. And everything is covered: From dresses and tuxedos to entertainment, food, and decor, thanks to volunteers and the Friends of Scott Foundation, a local non-profit that works to provide emotional and financial support for children with cancer and their families. This year's theme, Avengers "Age of Heroes," honors Ryan Wilcox, a former patient and Unforgettable Prom King, who lost hist battle with cancer. "Unforgettable Prom" was started by Carmen Delgadillo, founder of the Friends of Scott Foundation. Degadillo lost her teenage son, Scott, to Acute Lymphostic Leukemia. From that loss, Delgadillo started the foundation to help other families in need of support during their own battles with cancer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Federal Bureau of Investigation is asking for the public's help to connect dozens of victims to the confessions made by a convicted serial killer.Samuel Little, 79, has confessed to 93 murders to date, according to the FBI, and all of his confessions are believed to be credible. The murders took place between 1970 and 2005 in multiple states across the country. The FBI says Little is the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history. He was arrested in 2012 and extradited to California on a narcotics charge. After his arrest, Little's DNA was connected to three unsolved homicides between 1987 and 1989. He was convicted and sentenced in 2014 to three consecutive life terms without parole. In 2018, Little provided the FBI with detailed information on dozens of additional murders he is believed to have committed across the country, including murders in Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio.Law enforcement have been able to verify 50 of Little's confessions, but that leaves dozens of victims still unnamed and yet to be found. Fifteen of those cases are in the Los Angeles area. The FBI says Little confessed to strangling his victims, although most of their deaths were originally ruled overdoses or accidental. Some bodies have never been found.Little was convicted of two crimes in San Diego in 1984 after he raped and beat two women. Retired Detective Sergeant Wayne Spees was a rookie police officer on patrol just before 5 a.m. that October morning, when he and his partner discovered Little at a vacant lot near Market Street."He comes out of the back seat ... zipping his pants up ... He's insisting that he and his wife were just leaving," said Spees.Wedged inside the car was a prostitute, naked and bloodied. Little had choked her unconscious. Spees arrested him and spent several hours with him at the hospital while evidence was collected."He said, 'I didn't rape that ****. I just kicked the **** out of her. I'm going to kill that whore.' He had no remorse. He was just evil," said Spees.Little served 2-and-a-half years for his San Diego crimes before his release. The FBI has released information and possible sketches of dozens of potential victims in the hopes that someone will remember details that could help them connect the dots.If you have any information linked to Little’s confessions, please contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit at tip online at tips.fbi.gov. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The National Parks Service will survey San Diego's Chicano Park and its murals as part of efforts to add the land to the national list. The reconnaissance survey is expected to be completed next year and will evaluate the significance of the park and its artwork. The NPS announcement comes after Rep. Juan Vargas introduced a bill in 2019, The Chicano Park Preservation Act, that would require the Department of Interior to conduct a study of the park's merits for national affiliation.RELATED: Bill pushes to add San Diego's Chicano Park to National Park SystemVargas said in a release Wednesday that the NPS is willing to conduct the study without passing a bill requiring the department to do so."I’m very pleased to learn that the National Park Service will begin their preliminary assessment of Chicano Park early next year. The National Park Service affiliation will help protect the park’s longevity and legacy," said Vargas.Being affiliated with the NPS would allow the park to be eligible for technical or financial aid. The recognition would also allow Chicano Park to be, "recognized, preserved, and protected as an American history landmark," Vargas adds.RELATED: Celebrating Community: Chicano Park approaches 50th anniversary"Chicano Park is our spiritual home and represents a defining moment of victory for the Barrio Logan and Chicano community," said Vargas. "I will continue my work in Congress to ensure that Chicano Park is eligible and recognized as an affiliated site of the National Park System."Chicano Park was created in 1970 after the Barrio Logan community boycotted the construction of a California Highway Patrol station underneath the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge. In 1980, it received designation as an official historical site by the San Diego Historical Site Board. It listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and as a National Historical Landmark in 2016.RELATED: Lease approved for Chicano Park museum and community centerThroughout the year, locals and tourists visit the roughly 80 murals that depict San Diego and Chicano history and culture.Victor Ochoa, who painted some of the murals, told ABC 10News the history depicted in Chicano Park's art is truly representative of the community because it lacks censorship and showcases important figures."The park in itself acts as kind of like an obstacle to just eradicate our heritage, our history, our community," Ochoa said. "I see the spiritual energy more and more in the park and the murals, and the murals become even more historical documents."On April 20, 2020, Chicano Park celebrated its 50th anniversary. 2646
