BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) - Temperatures as high as 41 degrees Celsius continued to grill south China this week, but local Chinese are popping up with cool ways to cope with the heat.Every morning this summer, thousands of residents in the eastern Chinese city of Hanzhou rush to air-raid shelters, not to escape air attacks, but summer heat.In the capital of Zhejiang Province, many city dwellers have found their summer resorts in the city' s nine bomb shelters, which were dug beneath hummocks in the 1960s to defend against "American imperialist invaders" .In one shelter in southern Hanzhou, elders are watching swordsman TV opera or playing mahjong, while children play hide-and-seek in the labyrinth-like place.Temperatures inside the shelter were 22 degrees Celsius, compared to 38 degrees Celsius outdoors, according to a LED screen above one entrance."We old folks don' t like to be cooped up in air-conditioned rooms," said Ye Chulin, a local retiree. "Here the air is fresher and we can associate with many friends."The shelters, with benches, LCD TVs, and other newly installed comforts, were opened to the public free of charge and have apparently seen more visitors than back in the Cold War years.In fact, more than 3,000 residents frequent the shelters to find relief from the summer heat every day, said Cheng Zhiguo, an official with the municipal civil air defense administration.A resident surnamed Xu told Xinhua that spending his leisure time in the shelter could save him ten yuan (1.5 U.S. dollars) in air-conditioning costs per day."And this is not just about saving money, but it is also more environmentally friendly," added Xu.In the neighboring province of Jiangxi, residents are swarming into free, air-conditioned libraries to stay cool, and to learn!In the Jiangxi Provincial Library, chairs in all reading rooms are fully occupied. BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm "Dianmu" along with gusty winds will strengthen precipitation in north China as it moves north, the national meteorological agency warned on Monday.The typhoon, started Sunday night in the sea about 400 kilometers east of Taiwan, is expected to complicate flood-control efforts in northeast China, where torrential rain-triggered floods have left more than 100 people dead and missing.Heavy rains will hit parts of northeast China's Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces on Tuesday. Northwest China's Gansu and Shaanxi provinces will also be affected, said the National Meteorological Center.The typhoon, the fourth this year, was moving northeast at a speed of 25 km per hour. Its center was located about 390 km east of Zhejiang Province's coast Monday afternoon and will approach southern coast of the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday, said the center.

TANGSHAN, Hebei, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Tangshan, a Chinese city that lost 240,000 lives to a devastating earthquake 34 years ago, relived the pain and sorrow once again Wednesday on another anniversary.Not only Tangshan, the whole nation's memories of the catastrophe also came alive again as a film about the earthquake, "Aftershock", hit the big screen across the country.A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the industrial city in north China on July 28, 1976, which was believed to be one of the deadliest natural disasters of the 20th century.Thirty-four years later, exactly on the very same day of the quake, Wu Ze, 46, came to a black marble wall that bears the names of all victims of the earthquake, including her sister's."I was 12 and my sister was 16 (when the quake struck). She was the smartest kid in the family and the best in her class. She was just gone overnight, " Wu said, unable to stop weeping."Every year on July 28, I come here for her," she said.The Tangshan government built the 300-meter-long wall, widely known as the Chinese "wailing wall", two years ago for the public to mourn those they had lost, as most of the dead were hastily buried in mass graves.The Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Park, where the "wailing wall" is located, saw its busiest day of the year Wednesday as people streamed in to mourn for their beloved ones.An earthquake museum in the park also opened to the public Wednesday.Covering an area of 12,000 square meters, the museum displays more than 400 photographs and 600 pieces of articles about the 1976 earthquake.
