The New York attorney general is trying to break up the National Rifle Association over allegations of mismanagement and the abuse of member money.Adam Winkler, a UCLA law professor who specializes in the Second Amendment, says this is just the start. The legal battle could go for another year or two.If the NRA dissolves at that point, it would have a huge impact on American politics, but that doesn't mean the end of the gun debate.“What happens is the resources of the NRA would be distributed in a way that is designed to match the donors' intent,” said Winkler. “And that means that money would go to gun rights organizations and would go towards fighting against gun control in most, most circumstances.”Winkler says the NRA dissolving isn't the only potential outcome. The attorney general is also seeking less drastic repercussions, like removing certain in-house lawyers or board members. That includes Wayne LaPierre, the executive vice president.We don't yet know exactly what evidence there is. The Pac-12 Conference announced Friday that member athletic teams in several sports — including football — would play a limited schedule against only conference opponents.The conference also announced that it was delaying the start of mandatory athletic activities "until a series of health and safety indicators...provided sufficient positive data to enable a move to a second phase of return-to-play activities."The conference did not say in its statement what those "indicators" were.Men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball teams will also be limited to a conference-only schedule this fall.The Pac-12 added that it would honor scholarships for players who choose to sit out the season for fear of contracting the virus.The conference's decision eliminates a number of high-profile non-conference matchups that would have netted members' schools a significant paycheck from broadcasters. It could also negatively impact any Pac-12 football team's chance of playing in a postseason bowl game.The decision comes a day after the Big Ten made a similar announcement. The Lima Police Department in Ohio has issued a statewide endangered missing child advisory for four children taken by their mother who doesn't have custody of them.Their mother, Marianne Merritt, is said to be headed to Florida. Authorities are looking for a vehicle that is described as a dark blue 2000 Chrysler Voyager with Ohio license plate: FMQ3175. The minivan has a white passenger door.Damara Croley,13, Benjamin Karl- Leland Croley, 12, Patience Wilson, 9, and Damien Wilson, 8, were taken by their non-custodial mother, according to a release.Authorities said Merritt's boyfriend, Charles Perkins, is believed to be with them. He is said to be abusive toward the children and has active warrants. The moderators for the 2020 presidential and vice presidential debates have been announced.The Commission on Presidential Debates announced the moderators Wednesday morning for the events this fall.Chris Wallace, a host on Fox News, will moderate the first debate between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden on September 29. It will be held at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. This debate was originally scheduled to take place at the University of Notre Dame, however they withdrew citing coronavirus pandemic concerns.Vice President Mike Pence will debate Senator Kamala Harris, the democratic vice presidential candidate, on October 7 in a debate moderated by Susan Page, the Washington Bureau Chief at USA Today. The one and only vice presidential debate will be held at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah.Trump and Biden will face-off again on October 15, moderated by Steve Scully who is a political editor at C-SPAN, and on October 22 moderated by Kristen Welker, White House correspondent for NBC News.The October 15 event will be held in Miami, after the University of Michigan withdrew citing coronavirus pandemic concerns. This debate format will be more like a “town meeting,” according to the commission and agreed to by both parties. Questions will be asked of both candidates by citizens in South Florida.The last scheduled presidential debate is planned for Belmont University in Nashville.At this time, all four debates are scheduled for 90 minutes. With the exception of the October 15 debate, the other events will be formatted to have the moderator asking questions and allowing the candidates 2 minutes to respond.The segments and topics will be determined by the moderator and announced closer to the event date. 1796

The National Rifle Association is suing the state of Florida after Gov. Rick Scott signed Senate Bill 7026 into law Friday, the first gun control legislation enacted in the state after the Parkland school massacre on February 14.The NRA suit focuses on the part of the law that raises the minimum age to purchase a firearm to 21 from 18."This bill punishes law-abiding gun owners for the criminal acts of a deranged individual," executive director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action Chris W. Cox said. "Securing our schools and protecting the constitutional rights of Americans are not mutually exclusive."Seventeen people were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School when a 19-year-old man with a semi-automatic military-style rifle opened fire.The lawsuit, filed in the Northern District of Florida, says the age minimum section of the new law violates the second and 14th amendments of the US Constitution.The NRA argues people who are 18 years old are considered adults "for almost all purposes and certainly for the purposes of the exercise of fundamental constitutional rights."The organization also contends federal law already prevents many Americans 21 or younger from buying certain types of guns. Florida's law unconstitutionally broadens those limits, the NRA says.Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is named as a defendant, said she was proud of the law."This bill is not perfect, and sadly it will not bring back the 17 lives lost in the horrific school shooting, but the safety of our children is not a political issue, it's simply the right thing to do," she said.Bondi also lauded the students of Stoneman Douglas, many of whom have called for tougher gun laws.Several students texted CNN's Dianne Gallagher with their excitement about Scott signing the measures."We are happy and ready to keep working!!," wrote junior Connor Dietrich."We have much more planned.
