EL PASO, Texas - A cathedral in El Paso was vandalized while the church was open and available for prayer Tuesday morning. The Diocese of El Paso says a suspect came into the sanctuary at St. Patrick Cathedral around 10 a.m. and destroyed an almost 90-year-old statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was located in the center behind the main altar.“I am in shock and we at the Cathedral are heartbroken over such an unexpected situation,” said The Rector of St. Patrick Cathedral, Fr. Trini Fuentes. The suspect has been detained by the El Paso Police Department, officials said.“This statue is one of my favorite representations of Jesus—his arms open wide in welcome, his heart aflame with love for us. I would often take inspiration from this image as I prepared for Mass,” said Bishop Seitz. “As sad as I am to see a statue attacked and destroyed, I am grateful that it was not a living person. But a statue, particularly this statue, concretizes and connects us to persons and ideals that are not visible to our eyes. They reveal to us realities that are close to us, but unseen."Officers are currently continuing their investigation into the vandalism.“At this point we do not know anything about the person who carried out this assault, but he certainly must be a person who is greatly disturbed to have attacked this peaceful place in our city and this image of the King of Peace. I hope this might be the impetus for him to receive the help he needs. He will be in my prayers,” Bishop Seitz continued. “I am devastated at this irreplaceable loss as I know members of this parish community and the whole Church of El Paso will be. At this moment we will reach out in confidence to the One this statue represented and I know he will console us."This story was first reported by Sydney Isenberg at KXXV in Waco, Texas. 1834

Donald Trump Jr. on Tuesday evening marked Halloween by tweeting that he would redistribute his child's candy to "teach her about socialism.""I'm going to take half of Chloe's candy tonight & give it to some kid who sat at home. It's never to (sic) early to teach her about socialism," the President's eldest son tweeted, along with a photo of his daughter dressed as a police officer and carrying a bucket of candy.Trump Jr.'s dig at socialism got a reaction from some on the left. The socialist magazine Jacobin tweeted a screenshot of Trump Jr.'s tweet and wrote, "Just wait until she finds out about capital income!"And Twitter user @Bearpigman said socialism was more similar to children getting free candy from trick-or-treating than it was to her father taking her candy.Trump Jr., like his father, tweets relatively often, drawing a mixture of praise from President Donald Trump's supporters and scorn from his detractors on social media.Trump Jr. garnered controversy last year when he tweeted a meme comparing refugees to Skittles. The Trump campaign defended his tweet, while the candy maker distanced itself from Trump Jr.'s comparison.  1165

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on Tuesday that he will celebrate his 80th birthday virtually through a Zoom call.Fauci turns 80 on Thursday, and has been working long hours as the federal government’s leading infectious disease expert amid the coronavirus pandemic. In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Fauci said he normally spends his birthday with his daughters. With the coronavirus pandemic still spreading through the US, Fauci will only be spending the milestone in person with his wife.Fauci’s birthday comes one day before Christmas. He is following the type of advice he has been giving to Americans amid the holidays. The US is averaging more than 2,500 coronavirus-related deaths and is still battling a surge spurred by Thanksgiving gatherings.“I am going to practice what I am preaching to my fellow Americans in this country,” Fauci told Blitzer. “I am going to do something that is quite modified from what I had done traditionally. I am going to have a quiet dinner in my home with my wife. I would love to have my three daughters who are on different parts of the country, different states that would have to fly in for the most part. We are going to do a Zoom together. We are going to be talking to each other and toasting each other.”Fauci cautioned that people should avoid traveling during the holidays.“This type of travel is risky,” Fauci said. “Particularly if people start congregating, when they get to their destination in larger crowds in indoor settings, I'm afraid that if in fact we see this happen, we will have a surge that's superimposed upon the difficult situation we are already. And so it could be a very difficult January coming up. If these things happen.”In the District of Columbia, Thursday has been proclaimed “Dr. Anthony S. Fauci Day” by mayor Muriel Bowser.“We are incredibly proud to count Dr. Fauci among the many DC residents who are sacrificing so much to keep our communities healthy and safe,” Bowser said. 2036
