SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's a disease that kills nearly a half million people a year. Mostly children. But painstaking work right here in San Diego is bringing the world ever closer to ending malaria."After you've been doing it for a while you get a little bit tired," said PhD student Madeline Luth, as she works over a microscope, "You're hands get a little bit shaky."She's part of a research team at UC San Diego involved in tedious, precise work."I'm using my syringe here to separate out a single mosquito," she said, "to isolate the thorax which contains all of the malaria parasites." Malaria is a parasite spread by mosquitoes; making the insect the deadliest organism on the planet -second only to humans. Millions of people -primarily in poor parts of the world like Africa- are made sick by the parasite every year. And hundreds of thousands die."What we're trying to do is interrupt the process so the infection never takes hold in your liver.," said Dr. Elizabeth Winzeler, who heads up the research team at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. "So you never develop any symptoms of the disease".Dr. Winzeler says here team has tested more than a half million compounds against the parasite. And is now about to release hundreds of promising mixtures to researchers around the world. "They can take the recipes and the information that we've used and start their own anti-malarial drug development," says Dr. Winzeler.The open door approach with no intellectual property protections, is made possible by billions of dollars in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It is also a necessity since the vast majority of those new drugs will save, are too poor to pay for medicine. The venture is purely to save lives. "We're doing this for the good of humanity, says Dr. Winzeler, "And I think everyone is on board with this idea." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the midst of a housing supply crunch, San Diego is seeing apartments taken off market and reserved for short-term vacationers. The units would add to the estimated 16,000 vacation rentals now available in the City of San Diego, according to a recent audit.Now, a company called Sonder has signed master leases at apartment complexes and towers in locations including downtown, North Park, Little Italy, and Point Loma. Instead of renting them full time, the company leases them to visitors, charging more than 0 per unit on an average night. "Every San Diego resident needs to be afraid of that," said Brian Curry, whose group Save San Diego Neighborhoods is tracking Sonder. "It's a huge crisis, drives up rents, drives up housing prices."Curry's group estimates Sonder has leased more than 70 units and counting, including entire buildings in some locations. A spokesman for Sonder declined comment Thursday. In the past, the company has stated it pays all local taxes and that it has the right to sublease to short-term renters. Additionally, it has noted that developers have used increased revenue from Sonder to build even more market rate units. Still, City Councilwoman Barbara Bry said she was appalled at the practice and says the city should be ensuring developers deliver on the units the city approves. "Private developers tell us, 'let us build more units, let the market take care of our housing problem,' and then they artificially remove units and turn them into short-term vacation rentals," she said. "That's not fair."Meanwhile, the city code enforcement division is continuing to investigate The Louisiana complex on University Avenue. The city approved the complex as a 13-unit mixed-use apartment complex, but Sonder has the master lease for each of the market-rate units. The only confirmation so far is that the two low-income units on the property are leased to San Diegans who qualified. 1947

Nothing will ruin your night more than finding out your car's been towed.That's exactly what's happened more than 1,000 times since the city converted Fifth Avenue to a three-minute passenger loading zone after 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights in September 2016. "They really don't ask questions around here," said Vanessa Figueroa, who hands out fliers for Gaslamp BBQ on the corner of 5th and Island every Friday and Saturday nights. "If you're parked here, your car's gone."The city made the change to reduce gridlock, boost emergency response times, and make passenger drop-offs safer. But that's also meant a lot of towing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Marine biologists and other experts are at Fiesta Island Tuesday morning to try to determine what caused the death of a large whale.The gray whale was discovered by lifeguards on the shore of Blacks Beach Monday at about 11 a.m.The dead whale was eventually towed from the Torrey Pines area to Fiesta Island, arriving at 3:30 p.m.Officials with the National Marine Fisheries were called to Fiesta Island to perform a necropsy.After Tuesday's examination, the whale is expected to be transported to the Miramar Landfill.  552
