SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California state officials have issued their COVID-19 guidelines for gathering during the holidays. With less than two weeks until Thanksgiving, the guidelines include things like physical distancing and wearing a mask when not eating or drinking. There are specific guidelines for counties in the purple tier, like San Diego County. Counties in the purple tier are required to gather outdoors. Health officials recommend no more than three households and limiting the gathering to two hours or less. Infectious disease specialists say the guidelines are strict, but necessary to slow the spread of the virus. Other recommendations include having guests frequently wash their hands and having only one person serve food and beverages, with a mask on. Older and at-risk individuals are advised not to attend. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say they are taking aggressive measures to contain a flu outbreak at San Diego's migrant shelter. At least 16 migrants have shown flu-like symptoms; all were recently flown to San Diego from Texas by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Three migrants tested positive with a rapid influenza test."In order to take steps to prevent the spread of the disease we've become more aggressive in treating everyone with symptoms, regardless of when those symptoms started," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, Deputy Public Health Officer for the County.RELATED: Flu outbreak sickens over 30 migrants at border centerBefore being admitted to the shelter, migrants undergo medical screenings.Migrants with flu-like symptoms are being isolated off-site in hotel rooms, along with their family members who are receiving preventative medicine.On Thursday, County Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Nathan Fletcher expressed their continued frustration with the federal government's handling of the migrant crisis. "Had we not taken these steps these migrant families would have been released by ICE at bus stops or transit centers without the medical screenings, without the treatment, without the attention, and without the help and support that we have provided. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California public health officials say the Southern California region has run out of ICU bed capacity.The region, which includes San Diego and 10 other counties, hit 0% capacity, as the state reported 52,200 more coronavirus cases on Thursday. California officials say regional ICU capacity is calculated based on the total number of adult ICU beds minus neonatal and pediatric ICU beds. Adult ICU capacity includes staffed ICU beds and ICU surge beds.San Diego County said Thursday that it was currently at 16% ICU capacity after adding 2,604 new virus cases. There are 295 ICU cases in the county out of 1,186 hospitalizations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border officials seized nearly two tons of drugs valued at millions of dollars at San Diego and Imperial Valley ports of entry last weekend.Between June 14 and June 16, Customs and Border Protection says more than 2,638 pounds of marijuana, 1093 pounds of methamphetamine, and five pounds of heroin were seized after being discovered inside doors, flooring, and other areas of vehicles and a tractor-trailer.In one instance, agents at the Calexico Port of Entry stopped a 34-year-old driver on Friday and referred the driver to a secondary inspection. There, canine agents made a positive detection and the port's imaging system discovered anomalies inside the vehicles flooring.Agents uncovered 40 packages of methamphetamine hidden in the vehicle.The same day, a tractor-trailer was stopped at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, arriving from Mexico with a shipment listed as "watermelons and cactus." An officer referred the driver to a secondary inspection, where a canine officer alerted agents to a positive detection in pallets of watermelons.Agents found 311 packages of marijuana, worth an estimated ,557,000, intermixed with the fruit.During another incident on June 16, agents at the San Ysidro Port of Entry stopped a 35-year-old man where a secondary inspection revealed 86 packages of methamphetamine, with a street value of 3,700.All drivers were turned over to Homeland Security agents for processing and all vehicles and narcotics were seized by CBP. 1494

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As coronavirus cases increase across the country, there is a concern about staffing in hospitals across Southern California.Not only are hospitals dealing with patients they typically see during this time of year, COVID-19 patients are adding stress to thinning resources.“If these trends continue, we’re going to have to much more dramatic—arguably drastic—action,” said Governor Gavin Newsom during a news conference on Monday.Currently, 74 percent of ICU beds are occupied in Southern California. State health officials protect it to be at 107 percent capacity by December 24th.“I have a guarded concern about the direction that we’re moving in,” said nurse practitioner Samantha Gambles Farr of the rising cases.Gambles Farr said she is not only worried about staffing numbers, but also the physical and mental health of her colleagues. “The staffing issues have always been something that we've dealt with in the ICU because of the critical acuteness of our patients and the burnout of staff,” she said. ‘In these unprecedented times with COVID in the pandemic, what we're seeing is that nurses are picking up a lot more overtime and shifts.”Early in the pandemic, the state created the California Health Corps. It asked for those with health care experience to help during the COVID-19 outbreak. Thousands, including retired workers and nursing students, volunteered to help.
