I have to forgive you to have some sort of peace to live my life."Quick also took the stand. She says McKnight and her 7-year-old son Jayden -- called his Dad's phone after learning of his death. He left a voicemail. He asked his mom if dad could hear it from heaven. He asked if he could watch his dad's highlights on YouTube. When he went to watch a video, a clip of his dad's body on the ground came up. She did ask the judge for the maximum sentence of 40 years.Gasser gave no response. Newsom says he believes children learn best in the classroom and his administration will support districts with personal protective gear and testing resources so they can safely reopen. His administration has approved more than 1,200 requests for waivers to allow for in-person education for elementary school students in counties where coronavirus cases remain widespread. Bill Dodd told the San Francisco Chronicle on Saturday."It was a tough fight ... so we are pivoting," said Dodd, co-chairman of the legislative conference committee on wildfire preparedness and response.Brown's proposal would have let judges decide how much utilities pay when their equipment causes wildfires. It would have softened a legal standard that generally holds them entirely responsible for the costs of fires triggered by their power lines or other infrastructure.Current California law holds utilities responsible for damage from fires ignited by their equipment even if they have followed safety rules.Those who want to change the law fear utilities could go bankrupt or significantly raise prices for California residents as climate change makes wildfires even more severe.Lawmakers raised concerns about Brown's plan at an Aug. 9 hearing on the proposal. They said it would give utility companies too much protection without ensuring they safely maintain equipment.The issue was raised last fall when Pacific Gas and Electric Co. launched a lobbying campaign with other big utility companies to change the system.It's unlikely they'll drop their fight but they will lose a key ally in Brown, whose term ends in January. 1574

(AP) — Authorities say a U.S. Army special forces sergeant based in Florida has been charged in the deaths of three people and the wounding of three more in an apparently random shooting at an Illinois bowling alley. Winnebago County State's Attorney J. Hanley said Sunday that 37-year-old Duke Webb has been charged with three counts of murder and three counts of first-degree attempted murder in the shooting at Don Carter Lanes, in Rockford, Saturday evening. Police Chief Dan O'Shea said Sunday that the men who died were aged 73, 65, and 69. He didn't provide names. He says two teenagers were wounded and that a 62-year-old man who was shot several times is in critical condition.According to The Associated Press, the 14-year-old boy was shot in the face and airlifted to a hospital in Madison in stable condition. A 16-year-old girl was shot in the shoulder and was treated at a hospital and released. Gavin Newsom has proposed covering immigrants 19 to 25.A proposal in the state Senate would expand that coverage to include people 65 and older, while the Assembly is considering a bill that would extend benefits to all low-income immigrants 19 and older.California already covers immigrants 18 and younger regardless of their status.A final decision on wider coverage may come down to cost.Newsom estimates his plan covering young adults would cost million a year.
