The FDA sees the public health value in expanding the availability of COVID-19 testing through safe and accurate tests that may include home collection, and we are actively working with test developers in this space," the agency said in a release.The problem with the fake kits, other than being fraudulent, is they could delay consumers from seeking medical care. Anyone who believes they have symptoms resembling the novel coronavirus (which are fever, coughing, and shortness of breath) is asked to contact their medical provider, who will help determine if they need to be tested."We have already identified and issued warning letters to companies found selling and promoting fraudulent items, and we expect additional such actions will be forthcoming," the FDA said.Anyone who believes they have found a vendor selling fake testing kits can report them to the FDA. 1570

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city is running behind on a project to restore an iconic bridge that borders Hillcrest and North Park.Now, people in the area are growing frustrated at the construction on the Georgia St. bridge that's causing traffic delays and drivers to use surrounding neighborhoods as shortcuts."Traffic is very very bad because of te bridge, and I have to go around to buy stuff for my shop, and it's taking me longer to get where I want to go," said Milan Misic, who lives in the area and owns the Balboa Perk coffee and antique shop. The city is restoring the 103-year-old bridge so it can withstand an earthquake. The city broke ground on the million project in July 2016, saying it would take a year. But now it won't be finished until next spring.A city spokesman says the delays are because of weather, and unanticipated cobbles and deposits crews discovered in the bridge walls, making drilling more difficult.He added that there is no threat to public safety and it will not raise the cost.You can track the project on the city's website.   1092

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The co-founder and CEO of the Super Dentists said that during the current COVID-19 pandemic, patients have been hesitant to get dental work done."The American Dental Association did a survey, and about 75 to 80 percent of the patients across the country feel comfortable about going back to the dentist. About 15 percent want a vaccine before they go back,” said Dr. Kami Hoss.And while he understands the precautions people are making, Hoss said a recent study indicates dentist offices have shown to be safe."There have been zero cases of COVID related to any dentist offices,” Hoss said.And to further help ease the minds of dental patients, Hoss has just written a book titled, "If Your Mouth Could Talk.""I wanted to know what keeps parents up at night and what their worries are. I did some research, and I had 300 pages of stats on what keeps parents up at night. When I read them, I realized that so many of them could be related back to their mouths, and their kids mouths. So, I decided to write a book about it,” Hoss told ABC 10News.He's a dentist and an author, but that is not all. Hoss has a love of music, so he decided to write and compose songs for the Super Dentists. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The city is backing state legislation that would change when police can use lethal force. The bill would authorize officers to use deadly force only when it is necessary to prevent imminent and serious bodily injury or death. Currently, police can shoot to kill when an objectively reasonable officer would do the same.Democratic Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, who represents the South Bay, co-authored the legislation."The current standard hits communities of color especially hard," she said. "Young black men are 20 times as likely to be killed by police as their white peers." More than 100 people spoke in favor of the bill Tuesday as dozens of officers looked on.San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit called the bill well-intentioned but based on flawed data. He noted while officers killed 172 people in 2017 and only half had guns, more than 90 percent had other potentially lethal weapons. "Officers must make the best call they can with the information available to them at a critical time, and sometimes factors like human limitations in processing information will cause them to make decisions that turn out to be wrong," he said. The bill's now in the assembly.The council voted 6-2, with Scott Sherman and Mark Kersey opposed. Councilman Chris Cate abstained. 1299

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The National Weather Service is warning beachgoers ahead of the July 4 holiday about elevated surf and strong rip currents. A beach hazards statement will remain in effect until Friday at 3 a.m. According to the National Weather Service, waves will reach three to six feet accompanied by dangerous rip currents. “Remember to swim near a lifeguard if going out in the ocean,” said 10News meteorologist Megan Parry.
