Starbucks opened the first of its fancy new Reserve stores Tuesday, as it continues battle competition from upscale coffee brands like Blue Bottle and Intelligentsia.The company said the store, which debuted inside its Seattle headquarters, is the first of 1,000 planned Reserve stores.Starbucks described the store concept as "an open, marketplace style" with a Princi bakery counter, a full liquor bar and a Reserve coffee bar, with tables, lounge areas and two fireplaces."Our Reserve store takes the best of coffee craft as well as artisan baking and layers in a marketplace-style customer experience creating a space that has both energy and moments of intimacy," said Liz Muller, senior vice president of Creative, Global Design & Innovation at Starbucks, in a statement.The company said the new products at the Seattle Reserve store include the Nitro Draft Latte, Spiced Ginger Cold Brew and an espresso drink called Bianco Mocha.Starbucks said that its Reserve rollout, which has been in the works since 2016, will also include 20 to 30 new Roasteries, with locations planned for Milan and New York this year, and in Tokyo and Chicago next year. The company said that some of the new Reserve stores will be converted from existing Starbucks stores.The company said it already has dozens of Reserve bars open in existing Starbucks locations. Ten years ago, in downtown Chicago, the humble beginnings of a love story began to flourish in one of the city’s most acclaimed high-end restaurants, Alinea.One of the kitchen’s chefs, Matt Chasseur, had taken a liking to one of the dining room’s hostesses, Ashley Fees, and before long, the two had started dating.In 2018, the couple got married. Then, they had a child.Then a second.Then a third.Life plans started changing, and the family of five moved from their Chicago apartment to a home in the middle of the mountains in Colorado.Matt started working on a ranch, preparing meals for visitors who would come to enjoy the vast landscapes and mountains of the state’s western slope.All of this--the moving, malleability, open communication--has helped the couple tackle their partnership’s biggest challenge yet: COVID-19.During the summer of 2019, the two bought a small space on Palisade, Colorado’s Main Street, and they turned it into a fine dining experience the town of 2,700 had never seen before.Matt says most people who first came in had no idea the new restaurant, Peche, had replaced the old one that used to be there as the couple tried to establish a customer base.Then, in March, like so many other businesses across the country, Peche had to close its indoor dining because of COVID.Employees were let go, vendors were cut, and the couple had to find out how to keep their new venture running.They applied for a PPP loan and were approved, but things were still a struggle until the duo started drawing from their past experiences as a way to help come up with solutions.At Matt’s previous restaurant, The Ranch, single meals were prepared for large groups, so instead of offering a wide range of options each night for takeout or delivery at Peche, the Chasseur’s decided to cook only one meal and make it absolutely delicious, as well as nutritious.“Your [body] is going to fight a very hard fight,” said Matt. “That was one thing that was very important to us: making sure that we were producing food that was not only delicious but helps boost your immune system.”Employees were also willing to help out in any capacity they could. At Alinea, Matt and Ashley were accustomed to a high-energy experience full of top-flight chefs who enacted strict parameters. It helped get the restaurant the acclaimed success it enjoys today, but Matt and Ashley also noticed it burnt-out employees, which is why they gave their employees at Peche more freedom to enjoy their lives outside the kitchen.In turn, the couple has seen loyalty from its crew.“In Chicago, you were in a kitchen with 25 other cooks and everyone had specific tasks,” said Matt. “You walk into this [current] environment and you’re like, ‘I don’t know how all this will get done,’ and then you look around and everyone is willing to jump in and dive in.”The moves have allowed Matt and Ashley to consolidate staff, cut costs, and try to give back in any way their restaurant can.“We’re going to take our best shot at this,” said Matt. “Everyone has invested so much in us so we’re making sure we’re investing in them as well.” 3117

Sunshine Mills, Inc. is voluntarily recalling some dog food products because levels of a mold by-product are potentially above the acceptable limit.Aflatoxin naturally occurs from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities, according to the Food and Drug Administration.No health issues have been reported at this time. The potential for elevated levels of Aflatoxin was discovered during routine sampling done by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.The recall affects Family Pet meaty cuts beef, chicken and cheese flavors, Heartland Farms grilled favorites beef, chicken and cheese flavor, and Paws Happy Life butcher’s choice dog food.Symptoms include lethargy or sluggishness, a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to eyes or gums or diarrhea.The products were distributed nationwide in retail stores. The Associated Press is reporting that six officers involved in the arrest of Freddy Gray — a young black man who died in the custody of Baltimore Police in 2015 — will not face federal charges.The U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday that the officers would not face charges from the federal government. Six officers were charged at the state level, three of which were acquitted. Three others had their cases dropped.Gray died on April 19, 2015, a week after he suffered a spinal injury while in custody after he was arrested for carrying a switchblade a week earlier. 597
The 2020 election is set to be unlike any other in history.With the COVID-19 pandemic, election officials expect up to 70% of all ballots to come in through the mail.There have been claims of fraud by President Donald Trump, but experts say the data does not support those claims."Somebody is more likely to be struck by lightning than they are to commit voter fraud,” said Lawrence Nordon, director of the election reform program at the Brennan Center for Justice, a non-partisan public policy group at NYU.Nordon says in the last few federal elections, 25% of all votes were cast through the mail. He says it can not only be more convenient, but an important tool when it comes to verifying results.“Mail ballots are paper ballots. That means we do have an opportunity to audit all of those ballots,” said Nordon. “But I think people should feel very comfortable with the security of the system.”As for security, election officials take extra measures to ensure the integrity of the ballot. Firstly, mail-in voting reduces the risk of foreign interference to nearly zero. Mail-in ballots are printed on a specific type of paper with technical markings that are difficult to duplicate. They also include several local elections like city council, school boards, and ballot initiatives. It means there are thousands of different ballots for our country’s 3,000 counties.Then you consider the actual ballot itself.It comes in a secrecy envelope that is connected to each individual voter who needs to sign it. And this is for a state that had the highest voter turnout of 77% in 2016.“The biggest thing we can do is inform folks and make sure they understand the process, make sure they understand that it’s secure, that it’s safe, that it’s transparent,” said Lopez.This is not to say there are not cases of voter fraud; there are. In July 2019, prosecutors in North Carolina filed charges against a Republican political operative accused of ballot tampering in a congressional election in 2018.Since 1982, the conservative Heritage Foundation says there have been 1,088 proven cases of individual voter fraud.That may sound like a lot, but the Brennan Center for Justice says considering the hundreds of millions of votes cast in that time, it is considered so rare and happens on such a small scale, that it does not warrant the broad-based red flags some people raise. 3041
