TAMPA, Fla. — Kids may be spending more time online this summer than in years past due to the coronavirus pandemic — and authorities warn online predators could use that extra, unsupervised time to their advantage."They had some incidences where people had broken into their Zoom calls, and what was great about that was because we had created a space where dialogue can happen, they told me about it," Damaris Allen, the Immediate Past President of the Hillsborough County PTA said. "That was really important because we had the groundwork laid."With school out and summer in full swing, many kids are spending their time online during the health crisis. Some officials worry now may be the most dangerous time for online predators."With camps being limited, parents being stretched thin, and kids spending more time online, it creates, unfortunately, a perfect storm for online predators," Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren said.Warren released a video on social media Monday with three tips for parents can take to help their kids have a "Secure Summer."First, the State Attorney says talk to your child and explain how they may be approached."Secondly, make sure that parents are actually watching what their kids are doing online," said Warren "Have the passwords, check to see what kids are doing and what information they're receiving."Warren also suggests using parental controls on devices and apps to choose what your child can access. His office says it has already seen online predators try to exploit children during the pandemic."Law enforcement is really paying attention to what's going on online now. We're working overtime to catch online predators," Warren said. "We're going to aggressively prosecute them. We won't stand for anyone trying to take advantage of our kids, especially during such a difficult time for all of us."Parents suggest starting that conversation now, so kids know they have a safe space to start a dialogue."This is a scary topic, don't avoid it because it's a scary topic," said Allen. TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- A Terre Haute police officer who died following an exchange of gunfire with a homicide suspect Friday night has been identified as Patrolman Rob Pitts, a 16-year veteran of the force.Pitts and three other officers with the Terre Haute Police Department were looking for a potential homicide suspect Friday afternoon at the Garden Quarter apartment complex.State police say the suspect started shooting at the officers from the second floor of an apartment building and the officers returned fire. Patrolman Pitts was wounded and later died at Terre Haute Regional hospital.The suspect was located around 9:15 p.m. when members of the Terre Haute Police Department SWAT team entered the apartment building.He also died from his wounds. The average debt among undergraduate students with loans in the class of 2019 is ,950, according to a new report from The Institute of College Access and Success, a nonprofit focused on higher education research and advocacy.That debt marks a slight decrease from ,200 for the class of 2018. The percentage of students in the class of 2019 who took out loans also dropped compared with 2018, from 65% to 62%.Debbie Cochrane, executive vice president of TICAS, says these shifts align with a general flattening of debt levels in recent years, due in part to increased state investment in higher education. But this trend and that funding could end due to the economic effects of COVID-19.“These students graduated in 2019,” Cochrane says. “We’re now in the middle of an economic and health crisis that puts all those gains in jeopardy.”Average student debt over timeAverage student debt growth has slowed, but indebtedness has increased substantially since TICAS issued its initial report on the subject 15 years ago.“What’s clear is that despite the flattening in recent years, debt has not been flat in the longer period,” Cochrane says.In 2004, the average student debt was ,550 — roughly 56% less than it is for the class of 2019. TICAS says inflation was 36% over the same period of time.Average debt has increased even faster in some states. For example, TICAS found that debt among graduates in New Jersey has grown 107% since 2004, rising from ,223 to ,566.The pandemic will likely accelerate this growth.“Students who are still in college or considering college now have frequently seen their family’s ability to pay for school change dramatically because of the economic crisis,” Cochrane says.She says it’s unclear what policymakers will do to support these students.Managing federal student debtRelief is available to most federal loan borrowers, as their payments are suspended interest-free through Dec. 31.But once payments restart, if you owed the average debt of ,950, your monthly bills would be roughly 0, assuming an interest rate of 4.5% and a 10-year repayment term.That may be difficult to afford if you’re facing an economic hardship.You could continue to pause payments, but pay interest for doing so. A better long-term solution is enrolling in an income-driven repayment plan.“Income-driven plans usually can fit someone’s budget,” says Betsy Mayotte, president and founder of the nonprofit Institute of Student Loan Advisors.These plans set federal loan payments at a percentage of your discretionary income, typically 10%.
