SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Pride Live, the online pride parade and festival, kicked off a day-long event today featuring elected officials, community organizations and businesses.Because of the pandemic, organizers took the historic Pride Parade march through Hillcrest online -- sdpride.org/live/ -- and began at 10 a.m. with a slide show of photos from 46 years of the parade, which started in 1974. The San Diego Women's Chorus followed with a virtual singing of the national anthem. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Blood Bank reached out to the public Tuesday asking for blood donations amid the coronavirus pandemic.The fast-spreading respiratory illness has resulted in school closures and work-from-home policies throughout San Diego County, forcing the bank to cancel blood drives.The San Diego Blood Bank collects more than half of its blood supply on bloodmobiles stationed at these blood drives, according to the company.RELATED: Red Cross pleads for blood donations amid severe shortage due to COVID-19 cancellations"The U.S. is on the verge of a serious blood shortage that will lead to blood rationing and triage," said David Wellis, CEO of San Diego Blood Bank. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The first of more than a dozen truckloads of sand for an international sand-sculpting competition started arriving at the Broadway Pier and Pavilion in downtown San Diego Monday morning.A total of 15 trucks hauled and dumped 300 tons of specialized sand on the pier for the seventh annual US Sand Sculpting Challenge.Event organizers said top competitors from countries around the world, including the US, Russia, Australia, Italy and others, will attend the event over the Labor Day weekend from Friday, Aug. 31, to Monday, Sept. 3.When completed, sand sculptures will stretch nearly 1000 feet over San Diego Bay, organizers said.The first four truckloads of sand arrived between 8:15 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, and subsequent loads will arrive in waves throughout the day, according to event organizers. 845

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego lifeguards and firefighters Sunday rescued a surfer who suffered a medical emergency while in the water in the Bird Rock area, authorities said.At 12:36 p.m., lifeguards and firefighters from the San Diego Fire- Rescue Department responded to the cliffs near Calumet Park about a surfer experiencing an unknown medical emergency, Lt. Andy Lerum of Lifeguard Services said.The man in his 60s experienced a possible heart-related ailment or seizure, but rescuers were not sure of the exact nature of his medical emergency, Lerum said.The man swam to the beach, where he collapsed and lifeguards began tending to him, the lieutenant said. He was taken by stretcher about 30 yards to the bottom of the cliff.Firefighters used the department's Rescue 44 truck, equipped with a crane, to lift the surfer from the beach to the top of the cliff, Lerum said. An ambulance then took the man to a La Jolla hospital for evaluation. He was reportedly in stable condition. 995

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Testimony wrapped up Friday in the trial of a North Carolina man accused of raping and murdering a 79-year-old woman in her Normal Heights home more than three decades ago.Kevin Thomas Ford, 63, is charged with murder and a special- circumstance allegation of murder during a rape in connection with the May 20, 1987, death of Grace Hayden.Ford is accused of strangling the victim. Last year, investigators with the District Attorney's Office's identified Ford as a suspect through DNA evidence, prosecutors say, as well as a single fingerprint he allegedly left on Hayden's stovetop.RELATED: April trial date set for man accused in 1987 rape, murder of San Diego womanTrial testimony indicated that Ford's fingerprint did not yield results on a San Diego County database, but when submitted to a national database, a match was found in connection with Ford's 2015 arrest in North Carolina for making criminal threats.He was subsequently arrested in the summer of 2018.His murder trial began earlier this week at the downtown San Diego courthouse.
