There have been 80 confirmed cases of the polio-like illness known as AFM in 25 states this year as of Friday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday.In addition, there are 139 cases under investigation for a total of 219 confirmed and suspected.This is eight more confirmed cases than the agency reported last week and 20 additional patients under investigation.The CDC noted an increase in reports of patients under investigation who began experiencing symptoms in August, September and October. It has not identified the 25 states with confirmed illnesses, nor has it said how many states are reporting cases under investigation.AFM, or acute flaccid myelitis, is a rare illness that affects the nervous system, especially the gray matter in the spinal cord, and can cause muscle weakness and sudden onset of paralysis. Last month, the CDC said that 90% of patients since 2014 have been children under the age of 4, although adults can also develop AFM.Other symptoms include drooping of the face or eyelids, difficult eye movement, trouble swallowing or slurred speech.Research is underway to determine the cause of AFM, although there is a focus on enteroviruses, which can cause respiratory illness and West Nile virus, and other viruses in that family.According to the CDC, there have been 404 confirmed cases in the United States since August 2014. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club says attendance is down about 5 percent, and handle is down 14 percent compared to 2018. "We've got to prove to our racing fans that we're doing the safest things we can to keep these horses healthy," he said. I have a few family members who are in medicine and nursing," said University of Colorado fourth-year medical student Lauren Heery. "Helping people through my direct knowledge as a scientist, and now as a medical student, was I think what interested me the most."She, like many medical students across the country, has found herself in a unique situation because of the pandemic."As all of the COVID things happened, as medical students, we’re not able to continue with our clinical rotation, just given the increased risk to us, the patients, and limited supplies that needed to be prioritized for staff," said Heery.So, she shifted gears and ultimately made the decision to spend a year researching the virus."I got involved with a few projects with the infectious disease division at University Hospital, as I was sitting on my hands waiting to get back into the clinical setting," said Heery.One of those projects is looking at the racial and ethnic disparities in the disease."Coronavirus kind of came together with a lot of my interests that I had been kind of working on. But the pandemic really fueled me to do something a little bit different and try to help figure things out," said Heery.With thousands of medical students having to change their plans, Heery is not alone. Three times this month, unusual and scary things happened at homes owned by music star Taylor Swift — all ending in arrests.On April 5, a man was arrested for throwing money over the fence of Swift's Rhode Island home. Police say Bruce Rowley, 26, first robbed Webster Bank in Connecticut the day before, and then drove to her home to give her the money.Police said Rowley was attempting to impress the singer. Rhode Island police had to chase him as he drove on Interstate 95 and refused to stop.State troopers eventually stopped him and he was taken into custody.Rowley is charged with robbery and larceny.
