Westfield North County has created specific family programming throughout the week for families looking to escape the brutal North County heat. The mall is offering family game nights from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday nights now through August 9. “Borrow one of our board games or play one of our life-sized versions of popular games like Tic-Tac-Toe, Jenga, Connect Four and Cornhole,” the mall says. A summer concert series will also be making its way to the mall on Fridays between 4 and 6 p.m. through the beginning of August. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In celebration of the National Parks Service's 103rd birthday, locals can enjoy the country's spectacular national parks for free.On Sunday, Aug. 25, NPS will celebrate its birthday by granting free admission to park goers across the country. The promotion is one of five "fee-free" days throughout the year. The next free admission days at Sept. 28 for National Public Lands Day and Nov. 11 in honor of Veterans Day.In San Diego, residents can enjoy free entrance to Cabrillo National Monument at the tip of Point Loma. As an added bonus, living history re-enactors will be in attendance to walk guests through the Age of Exploration.Films are also shown daily at the monument covering Cabrillo, the lighthouse, and nearby aquatic life. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s a form of paid time off that predates sick leave.California requires businesses to give an employee up to two hours of paid time off on Election Day to vote, if the employee is unable to vote during non-working hours.“They can take advantage of this paid time off at either the beginning of their shift or at the end of their shift and they can take as much time as they need to vote. But realize that only up to two hours of that time is going to be with pay,” said attorney Dan Eaton.Eaton said Californians have had some sort of mandatory paid time off to vote since 1891, making it the oldest kind of mandatory PTO.Workers who want to take advantage of this must notify their bosses two working days in advance. For people who work Monday through Friday, Eaton said they need to inform their bosses first thing Friday morning, although there are exceptions for unforeseen circumstances.The caveat is that this right is only for employees who cannot vote during their non-working hours.It’s somewhat harder to make that argument this election cycle at a time when every registered voter in California got a mail-in ballot, and early in-person voting at polling places begins Saturday, but Eaton doesn’t expect much pushback from companies.“There could be a court dispute but the optics of that are not going to be good even if, ultimately, the employer is legally justified,” he said.Even though turnout is on pace to be record-breaking this year, the U.S. still ranks near the bottom in voter participation each year. It ranked 26 out of 32 countries in the 2016 election, according to the Pew Research Center.So why not follow some other countries and make Election Day a national holiday?The idea has been floated before but it hasn’t gotten far. Senator Bernie Sanders tried unsuccessfully in 2018.“A federal holiday does not guarantee that your employer is going to close. And they’re expensive. Federal holidays tend to cost the federal government 450 million dollars just in personnel costs just for the one day in overtime,” said Matthew Weil at the Bipartisan Policy Center.Rather than a federal holiday, Weil said state holidays on Election Day can be helpful and several states have them. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jalen McDaniels, San Diego State University basketball's sophomore forward, was accused of filming consensual sex acts with a classmate in 2016 without her knowledge and sharing it with friends, according to a civil lawsuit filed Wednesday in Washington.The civil suit alleges McDaniels recorded the intimate moments with an 18-year-old female student while they were both seniors at Federal Way High School near Tacoma, Wash.The lawsuit goes on to say while McDaniels later told the plaintiff about the unauthorized recordings and that he had shared it with his friends, she learned from other students that the video became widely circulated. When she confronted McDaniels, he explained he had gotten away with a similar incident involving another female student, according to the lawsuit.The plaintiff's attorney, Joan Mell, who filed the suit, wrote her client has suffered from several self-destructive behaviors as a result, including attempting suicide.SDSU is accused of wrongdoing in the lawsuit as well.Mell alleges in the lawsuit that SDSU was contacted by Washington police to provide them with McDaniels' phone number, but failed to do so. The suit says SDSU, instead, alerted former basketball coach Steve Fisher, who secured McDaniels a lawyer, and McDaniels refused to cooperate.The suit goes on to allege McDaniels' refusal to cooperate and, "that others concealed his wrongdoing prevented prompt criminal investigation and referral to the prosecutor's office for timely filing of criminal charges under Washington’s criminal offense of distribution of intimate images."In a statement, SDSU said there would be "no change in [McDaniels'] status at the university" at this time, after an investigation by Washington authorities resulted in no charges before McDaniels' enrollment at the school: 1837

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Immigration rights advocates in San Diego are worried about the impact of President Trump's promised mass deportation. In a pair of tweets Monday night, President Trump said that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would next week "begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States."Benjamin Prado is the program coordinator for the U.S. Mexico Border Program with the American Friends Service Committee. Prado says the tweets are causing concern and confusion.“We’re not sure because of the tweets, they are just so random, and very limited in scope and depth," said Prado. ICE agents carried out an immigration crack down at the Zion Supermarket in Clairemont Mesa back in February. Twenty-six workers were detained. "Our communities have experienced all kinds of things, whether it be on transportation, roving patrols, that border patrol has done in the past,”said Prado. He said his members started watching their communities long before the president's latest tweet. "Our community members are mobilizing, have been mobilizing even before this tweet, and have been out in the community, making sure Immigration and Customs Enforcement doesn’t go and separate families," said Prado. Immigration attorney Edward Orendain said the enforcement action would likely target people who have skipped out on their hearings or who have been given final deportation orders. "Apparently, this is going to be targeted more toward people who already have outstanding deportation orders or orders of deportation. Initially, that may seem to be a good thing, but I know, because I have several clients, that a significant number of the people who already have final orders of deportation are under supervised release, which means local immigration already knows of them, but they’re allowed to stay in the United States usually for humanitarian purposes," said Orendain. Orendain says he has one client, who was given final deportation orders, but is on supervised release because she has an ill son who is a U.S. citizen. "She's been removed a couple of times, but she has a U.S citizen child who has severe medical and developmental issues and really can’t get the standard of care in his home country,so the government knows about her, knows that she has final orders of removal or deportation, but allows her to stay here as a humanitarian issue," said Orendain. It's estimated more than 200,000 undocumented workers are in San Diego County. Orendain said he hopes the president's tweet has more to do with politics than any actual plan. "Maybe it was a way to stoke the fires in his base, but because of the office that he holds, it has to be given attention." 2758
