A woman in Texas was sentenced Wednesday to a five-year prison term for voting illegally in the 2016 presidential election while on supervised release for a tax fraud conviction.When she voted in the 2016 election, Crystal Mason had already served almost three years in prison for her fraud conviction but had not yet completed her sentence and was still serving a three-year supervised release period, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.Convicted felons lose their voting rights in Texas until they complete their full sentences, including parole and probation.Mason reportedly told the court, however, that she was not aware of that prohibition and had not been informed that she was ineligible to vote until her sentence was complete."She voted in good faith," Mason's defense attorney J. Warren St. John said in an interview. "I don't think she should be going to prison for that." Her attorney has already filed an appeal. "I think Texas law is extreme in terms of sentencing people to prison for voting violations," he said.Mason signed an affidavit in order to cast a provisional ballot, which stated that it is a violation of the law to vote if you are a convicted felon, but Mason did not see that part of the ballot, St. John said."Ms. Mason was never asked if she was a convicted felon by the election judge nor did she indicate that she was a convicted felon," her attorney said. "Ms. Mason voted in good faith that she could legally vote because she was never notified by any government agency that it was against the law to vote."Prosecutors argued that Mason either intended to vote illegally or should have been aware that she was not eligible to vote, according to The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. After the New York Police Department responded to two suspicious packages Thursday evening at the Time Warner building in New York, the department deemed the incident a "false alarm." The false alarm came following a string of explosive devices that have been sent to Democratic Party leaders across the nation."As a precaution, the NYPD is currently evaluating a pair of unattended packages at the Time Warner Center Mall, Columbus Circle in Manhattan," NYPD said on Twitter during the investigation.Parts of the Time Warner building were evacuated as police investigated. On Wednesday, the Time Warner building was evacuated for several hours after police removed a suspected explosive device sent to ex-CIA Director John Brennan in care of CNN.  776

A white man who allegedly killed two people at a Kroger grocery store in Kentucky tried to enter a predominantly black church nearby minutes before the fatal shooting, police said.The two people killed Wednesday -- Maurice Stallard and Vickie Jones -- were shot in the grocery store and the parking lot, respectively. Amazon's cashier-free grocery store of the future is coming to San Francisco and Chicago.The company is expanding its experimental Amazon Go store to the two US cities, but did not say when they would open. It has posted job listings for store managers in the cities on its own site, which were first noticed by the Seattle Times.Amazon confirmed its plans for the two cities in a statement to CNNMoney. Earlier reports from Curbed and the San Francisco Chronicle found clues that Amazon was eying retail space in the two cities.Currently there is only one Amazon Go store: a small space located in the base of one of its Seattle skyscrapers that opened to the public in January.The store uses a collection of cameras and sensors to constantly track customers and inventory as they move around. Shoppers need to open the Amazon Go app to enter, and any products they take from the store are automatically charged to their account when they leave.There are no cashiers but there are plenty of human employees restocking shelves, checking ID for wines, and working security.Amazon is already in the grocery business. In addition to its own selection of food available for purchase online and the Amazon Fresh grocery delivery service, Amazon owns Whole Foods.
