BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday expressed their condolences to the families of the eight Hong Kong tourists killed in a hostage crisis in the Philippines.In a joint letter to Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, chief executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Hu and Wen expressed their deep sorrow for the families of those killed and consolation for the injured."We are in grave shock and grief on hearing that eight Hong Kong compatriots fell and many others were injured in the Manila hostage incident," the letter said."We hereby express our grave condolences and our deep sympathy to the families of the Hong Kong compatriots, and we hope the injured will recover soon," the letter said.Vice President Xi Jinping on Tuesday also expressed his condolences in a letter to Tsang.Eight Hong Kong tourists were confirmed dead and seven injured, two seriously, in Monday's incident in Manila, an official of Chinese Embassy in the Philippines said Tuesday.The coachload of Hong Kong tourists were held hostage for more than 10 hours by a former policeman who was protesting his dismissal before police commandos stormed the vehicle.

QINGDAO, Aug.19 (Xinhua) - China's largest marine patrol departed Thursday from Qingdao to Vladivostok, a coastal city in east Russia, participating in a multilateral joint drill.The joint drill is to be held from Aug.22 to 27, with the theme of "enforcing emergency responses to illegal actions threatening joint marine security".The North Pacific Coast Guard Agencies Forum (NPCGF) promoted the multilateral joint drill in 2009.Current members of NPCGF, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States, participate in the drill."The joint drill mainly focuses on arms trafficking and illegal migration, including searching, boarding and examining suspicious ships," said Wu Shaojun, captain of Marine Patrol 11.Chinese Marine Patrol 11, Marine Surveillance 83 and helicopters and ships from other countries will participate in the joint drill, said Wu.Chinese Marine Surveillance 83 left for Russia on Aug.13 from Guangzhou, capital city of south China's Guangdong Province.NPCGF, initiated by the Japan Coast Guard in 2000, is an organization devoted to fostering multilateral cooperation on illegal drug trafficking, maritime security, fisheries enforcement, illegal migration and heightened maritime awareness.Member states take turns hosting the annual forum. CHENGDU, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) - A panda cub born Friday afternoon at a breeding center in southwest China is just another panda bear born at the center. What makes her unique is her mother.Jini, the panda mother, gave birth to the female cuba at the age of 17. She is compared to a human in her sixties, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Sichuan Province said in a statement.The female cub weighed 125 grams. She was born at 14:41 p.m., four hours after Jini went into labour. Both the mother and cub are in good health, said the statement.Jini, a resident of Beijing Zoo, was sent to the Wolong center this March for the cub-birth purpose because the research center has developed expertise in breeding techniques.With a 20-year breeding history, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center is home to the world's largest captive panda population. It has helped Beijing Zoo and Chongqing Zoo and many zoos in other countries in breeding and feeding pandas.The new cub is Jini's second. It is the eleventh cub born at the Wolong center this year."Pandas come into heat in the spring and give birth in autumn. This is the main reason for the panda 'baby boom'," said Dang Chunxiang, an expert with the Wolong Center.More than 10 other pandas are expected to give birth over the next one or two months at the Wolong center.Jini delivered her first cub "Qingqing" in 2007 when she was thirteen and a half years old, which was itself rare amongst pandas. She also entered record books with her pregnancy that lasted 324 days. Generally, pandas deliver in 120 -150 days.The length of a panda's pregnancy depends on its health and nutrition level, according to experts.About 1,600 giant pandas are living in the wilds in China. Sichuan Province and the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu are the home to most of them. Another 290 pandas are in captive-bred programs worldwide, mostly in mainland China.

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The 4th China International Private Equity Forum saw contractual agreements worth 15.5 billion yuan signed, before it closed in north China's Tianjin Municipality Saturday.The forum, which aimed at providing introduction services between investors and enterprises, attracted 729 private equity funds from 36 countries and regions.
