Scharf said in a memo released this week that “there is a very limited pool of black talent to recruit from” in corporate America. The comments and similar statements made in a Zoom meeting led to an intense backlash in Washington and from advocacy groups. NORTH READING, Mass. – An off-duty police officer in Massachusetts is being credited with saving three people from an early morning house fire on Tuesday.The North Reading Police Department says Sgt. Thomas Encarnacao had just finished his shift and was on his way home when he noticed flames emerging from inside the home.After alerting dispatch of the fire, Encarnacao entered the home to alert the residents. He was able to locate a man sleeping on a coach at the front of the house and helped him outside to safety, according to police.The man told Encarnacao and other officers who had arrived to help that there were two more residents in the home, a 13-year-old boy sleeping in a back bedroom and a man in the basement of the home.The man in the basement was able to get out on his own after officers alerted him, but police say first responders had to pull the boy out through a window of a smoke-filled room.All three residents were evaluated by EMS at the scene and didn’t go to the hospital. No firefighters were injured. One officer suffered a cut to his hand while attempting to breach a basement window.Firefighters were able to put the blaze out, but the house ended up sustaining smoke, fire and water damage. Police say the residents were displaced and are being assisted by family members.The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation.“The work of the three officers this morning was truly courageous, and I am incredibly proud of them,” said Police Chief Michael Murphy. “Sgt. Encarnacao took decisive and immediate action, which very likely saved the lives of the residents inside the house. Once he got the first resident out, all three officers went back into the house, without protective gear, to look for additional residents. Their actions to get all of the residents out safely was truly heroic.” 1841
NEW YORK (AP) -- Fire officials say a man has been killed in in a raging apartment fire at Trump Tower in New York City.Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro says a 50th-floor apartment at the midtown tower was "virtually entirely on fire" when firefighters arrived after 5:30 p.m. Saturday.Fire officials say a man who was in the apartment was taken to a hospital and later died. Four firefighters suffered minor injuries. President Donald Trump tweeted earlier that the fire was "Very confined (well built building)." Trump's business is based at Trump Tower and his residence is there, but he has spent little time in New York since taking office.Nigro says no member of the Trump family was at the building on Saturday.He says about 200 firefighters battled the blaze. 783
NEW YORK (KGTV/AP) -- Macy's is hiring more temporary workers to handle online orders for the holiday shopping season.Macy's says it will hire 18,000 workers to fulfill online orders and other tasks at warehouses devoted to e-commerce operations. That's an increase of 3,000 from a year ago. Overall, Macy's temporary hiring is expected at 80,000, down from 83,000 a year ago.The overall decline contrasts with rival Target Corp., which announced earlier this week that it was hiring 100,000 people to work at its stores, an increase of 40 percent from a year ago. NEW YORK — The NYPD has suspended an officer without pay who was recorded using the bullhorn on his marked police vehicle on Saturday to shout "Trump 2020."The suspension is effective immediately without pay, the NYPD said Sunday.Brandon K Hines, who shared one of the videos on social media, said the incident occurred in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn."Trump 2020.
