"We cannot stay silent as the deaths of these humans continue to grow year by year. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Horses of Tir Na Nog equine sanctuary east of Alpine is inviting members of the public to join its monthly giving campaign and become a "Hay Hero."Donations support sanctuary operating expenses, including feed costs that exceed ,000 per year.The volunteer-driven nonprofit partners with the San Diego County Department of Animal Services to care for horses rescued from abuse, neglect or abandonment."By making a monthly pledge, our Hay Heroes are helping us meet our most basic commitment to provide our horses with a high-quality diet," Administrator Amy Pat Rigney said. "Hay Heroes can choose the amount of their monthly commitment. When feeding 58 equines, no gift is too small. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Target Corp. has agreed to pay .4 million to resolve allegations that it violated terms of a 2011 judgment regarding the company's handling and disposal of retail hazardous waste, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan announced Wednesday.``This settlement holds Target accountable for this second violation of environmental laws that involve the improper disposal of a long list of hazardous materials,'' Stephan said. ``This case serves as a reminder to corporations of the importance of environmental protection laws that safeguard the public's health and that violators will be held accountable.''The current settlement -- announced by Stephan, 21 other California district attorneys, the California Attorney General's Office and the city attorneys of San Diego and Los Angeles -- comes as a result of investigations that concluded the company committed violations by improperly disposing hazardous waste into landfills across California between 2012 and 2016. The waste included such items as electronics, batteries, aerosol cans, compact fluorescent light bulbs and medical waste, including syringes, over-the-counter and prescribed pharmaceuticals, as well as confidential medical information from its customers.``We are confident that with these strong injunctive terms and penalties, Target will implement meaningful changes to prevent this from ever happening again,'' said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. ``However, the wise move for all companies is to abide by the law and employ proactive training and processes to help ensure that hazardous waste violations are avoided in the first place.''It's the second settlement resolving allegations of hazardous waste compliance violations by Target. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gulls coach Dallas Eakins was Monday named the coach of its NHL parent team, the Anaheim Ducks.Eakins coached the Gulls throughout their four seasons in the American Hockey League, guiding them to a 154-95-23 record and three Calder Cup playoff berths. They reached the Western Division finals in the recently concluded 2018-19 season.The Gulls had the best record in the AHL's Pacific Division since its inception in the 2015-16 season.The 52-year-old Eakins called his hiring as the Ducks' coach ``a tremendous honor for my family.''``I am truly humbled,'' Eakins said. ``It was a privilege to serve as head coach of the San Diego Gulls during our first four seasons and I look forward to build off that success here in Anaheim.''Eakins replaces Randy Carlyle, who was fired on Feb. 10. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County has seen a nearly 5% increase in its response to the 2020 Census above the 2010 response rate, according to state census data.Data collected through Tuesday indicates 72.9% of county households have responded this year, as opposed to 68% in 2010, mirroring an increased response rate statewide.Census officials say that California's 2020 self-response rates surpassed the 2010 rate on Wednesday, with 68.4% of California households responding either online, by phone or mail. The 2010 rate was 68.2%.State census officials touted the success of their outreach campaign, particularly given California is considered one of the ``hardest-to-count'' states in the country due its size and a high number of people who are difficult to contact for census purposes, such as recent immigrants, people who lack high-speed internet access or people with limited English proficiency.Campaign efforts will continue until the Sept. 30 deadline.``It is through the collective efforts of millions of Californians that we have surpassed our 2010 self-response rate. But make no mistake -- we are not done yet. We know the hardest-to-count Californians still may be missed or undercounted given the shortened deadline, so it's essential these households complete the form now,'' said Ditas Katague, director of the California Complete Count -- Census 2020.``With two weeks left, our message is loud and clear: Californians need to act and fill out their Census forms,'' Katague added. ``We have just days to secure funding and representation in our state for the next decade.
