SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At least six employees with the VA San Diego Healthcare System counseling center have tested positive for the coronavirus.On Thursday, 10News spoke with several people who work at the location. The employees we spoke with said when people started having symptoms, they asked to work from home but were told to keep showing up.Too afraid to use their names or participate in any type of recorded interview for fear of retaliation from officials at the VA, the employees detailed their concerns over the phone. RELATED: Six San Diego VA employees test positive for coronavirusOne person told 10News, “We were begging for about two weeks to do telework.”Another employee said, “We were reporting cases of potential COVID (COVID-19) and asking for telework to quarantine and keep safe, and the answers we got back were, ‘We'll look into that.’” The employees tell 10News they work with homeless veterans and veterans with histories of chronic homelessness. Employees point to one sent last week where the director wrote, “You may have seen news reports about increased telework opportunities for federal employees. While this has been widely publicized, requests for the approval of new telework agreements will be very limited due to the limited bandwidth of telework systems and the need to have staff onsite to ensure the continuation of operations. Although some of you may have duties that could be performed remotely and would like to telework, at this time we need all employees who can work, to be present at their worksite.”At Wednesday's press conference with the County of San Diego, 10News asked county leaders if they aware of the cases at the VA office."The cases that are at that location are known to us and we are under an active investigation with the staff at that site," officials said. Per CDC guidance and VA protocols, individuals known to be at risk for a COVID-19 infection are immediately isolated to prevent potential spread to others.”Team 10 reached out to the VA spokesperson Thursday afternoon with additional questions regarding the allegations from employees. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As six candidates took the stage Friday, the eyes on who would be the one to replace former Congressman Duncan Hunter focused mainly on three.Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Republicans Carl DeMaio and Darrell Issa. The three are polling among the top for two spots up for grabs in the March primary. Campa-Najjar is making another run for the seat after he narrowly lost in 2018 to Hunter, who was then under indictment. He opened the debate Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Crews Thursday rescued a woman they say broke her leg while hiking above Blacks Beach.According to authorities, the incident happened around 2 p.m. in the Box Canyon area. Lifeguards say a woman in her 20s fell while hiking in the area and broke her leg.A helicopter could be seen lifting the woman from the canyon and taking her to a nearby hospital.Her condition is unknown at this time. 417

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction crews have started on about 4.5 miles of bikeways and safety improvements stretching from downtown to Hillcrest.The projects include separated and buffered bikeways on Fourth and Fifth Avenues, safety improvements such as lighting, upgraded landscaping, and improved crosswalks for people with disabilities and pedestrians.In all, the project will cost .2 million and cross from B St. in downtown, through Bankers Hill, and to Washington St. in Hillcrest."This project will make it safer and easier for people to walk and bike along commonly traveled streets to visit local businesses and reach destinations such as Downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, and Hillcrest," said SANDAG Vice Chair and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear. "San Diegans are walking and biking more during the pandemic and this project will provide safe and convenient options for people to continue to choose active transportation, even when the health crisis is far behind us."The new bikeways are part of the Uptown Bikeways effort proposed in 2012, meant to connect Uptown, Old Town, Mission Valley, Downtown San Diego, North Park, and Balboa Park. SANDAG says community members worried about the potential loss of parking due to the project worked with officials to find solutions, and ultimately were able to provide a surplus of parking.The agency adds that it has modified construction schedules to best minimize its impact on businesses currently using temporary outdoor setups to operate under coronavirus restrictions along Fourth and Fifth Avenues.Construction on the project is expected to be finished in 2022. During construction, nearby residents and businesses can expect intermittent lane closures, parking restrictions, construction noise, and dust.
