SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bystanders captured video of a truck involved in a crash near San Diego International Airport on Saturday speeding away from the scene. The video begins moments after a three-car crash on N. Harbor Drive at Lee Court around 9:30 a.m. A white truck reportedly slammed into the back of a Ford F-350 and sideswiped a sedan, according to the driver of the sedan, Kathleen Gleason. The driver of the white truck is then seen speeding away, creating a cloud of white smoke, with the driver-side front tire bent sideways. The driver first heads eastbound before turning around at McCain Road and heading westbound. A police vehicle is seen seconds later turning around and pursuing the truck.Gleason, a Lyft driver who was struck by the truck, told ABC 10News the suspect was determined to get out of the area quickly. She said she was in the middle of dropping off a passenger to the airport when she was struck. Thankfully, Good Samaritans gave the passenger a lift the rest of the way, she said.Gleason said police caught up with the driver and arrested the person. ABC 10News reached out to San Diego Police about what charges the driver faces, but have not heard back. 1192

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- City leaders are considering closing some streets in the Gaslamp Quarter to help with social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic.Pictures on social media showed crowds of people congregating outside bars, many not wearing face coverings, shortly after they reopened Friday.According to a spokesman for San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the city's department of special events is reviewing a proposal to shut down parts of Fifth Avenue between G and K streets to make it easier to physically distance by providing more room in parts of the public right of way for outdoor dining. The Gaslamp Quarter Association submitted the application, which would close close the streets Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays. It could be approved and go into effect as soon as this Thursday.Robert Romero owns the Tivoli Bar and Grill. The longtime family-run restaurant on Sixth Avenue reopened Monday. It's the oldest bar in San Diego county."We were open originally in 1881, never have closed in all those years, during the depression, prohibition, World War I, World War Two, until now," said Romero. The owners say they'll be strict about social distancing, face coverings, and increased sanitation protocols."We will have someone at the front door constantly monitoring our customers and making sure they are holding to the restrictions put on us," said Romero.Romero said he noticed many other bars and restaurants were not following the county health orders."It was terrible, when they do that, they're not only reflecting on us, but also putting up the potential for shut down," said Romero.County Health Officials also acknowledged there were problems Friday night after the bars first reopened, but said the city is working to close some streets.California Assemblymember Todd Gloria is also concerned about crowds gathering in the Gaslamp."Part of their reopening is a limited of their capacity, they're operating at a fraction of what they can actually accommodate. Because they were metering the entrance of customers into their businesses, that overflow of customers ends up on the sidewalk," said Assemblymember Gloria.Gloria also thinks closing Fifth Avenue is a good idea."Let's see if there's a way to meet in the middle if you will, these businesses are adhering to the guidelines; the city can certainly help people by closing down the streets, we can be passing out face masks to people who are waiting," said Gloria.Back at Tivoli's, the owners are ready to welcome back customers."Behave, be happy, we love you, they love us and remember, I love it," said Romero, referring to the name Tivoli, spelled backwards. 2648

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Before Vice President Mike Pence made his way to Coronado, he spent the morning at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel. The Vice President and Second lady stayed there during their San Diego Visit. A few protestors inflated the now well-known "Baby Trump" outside of the hotel; It's possible the Vice President got a look at the giant balloon. "We're hoping that the Vice President sees this and sees that there is resistance here in San Diego," says protestor Will Johnson. The giant balloon was an attention grabber for many who saw it on Park Boulevard. "I knew he was coming to town, but I didn't know he was staying here," says Kate Permenter. Permenter is in town for a convention and staying at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, saying, "So last night people kind of started freaking out."Outside of the hotel, security checked every car making its way into the garage. Hotel guests say there are dozens of police officers and secret service agents inside of the hotel. "At every entrance, there are cops just kind of staring at you."Dozens of officers escorted the motorcade as the Vice President left downtown this morning. Protestors said there would be another demonstration outside of the hotel at 7 p.m. but "Baby Trump" will not be in attendance. 1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Consumer spending in San Diego was down nearly .3 billion between February and April 2020, showing just how badly the COVID-19 pandemic crippled the local economy.Since stay-at-home orders began in March, SANDAG says taxable sales in the region dropped from an average of .3 billion to billion in April. The largest losses in the region were seen at apparel stores (an 83% decrease in sales) and restaurants (down 67%).On the other side, big-box retailers like Costco, Target, and Walmart have fared well, SANDAG says. Grocery stores and pharmacy, though, were actually down 10% in taxable sales. Home improvement sales were also up, likely due to stimulus checks, SANDAG adds."It is interesting to learn that grocery stores and pharmacy sales are actually down by 10%, while home improvement sales have spiked," said SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major. "We can assume that during the pandemic, people had more time to work on outdoor landscaping, gardens, and other home beautification projects. Plant seed companies also saw increases-- nearly four times their average sales."Consumer spending among online retailers like Amazon increased 35% as well.SANDAG's report estimates that consumer spending will continue to be down through August, though slightly less each month. 1306
