OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A desperate mother is making a plea for tips after a thief snatched her van, a "lifeline" for her special needs daughter.Veronica Lara lives on Harrison Street. Her 7-year-old daughter, Sophie, suffers from Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, and a rare chromosomal disorder called Pallister-Killian Mosaic Syndrome. A year ago, her family spent ,000 making her 2015 Toyota Sienna wheelchair accessible."It's my daughter's lifeline. Sophie loves being in the van and getting out of the house."She laughs a lot. Anything that makes her happy fills my heart with joy," said Lara.Joy is not the word to describe her family's past month. In early November, her husband Juan was shot in Tijuana while waiting at a taco stand. "Armed carjacking ended where he was. He ran, but many people got shot," said Lara.Juan survived gunshots in his hand and stomach. He is no longer able to work as a tow truck driver, which will squeeze the family's finances."I'm still standing strong. I'm a strong momma, but this special needs family has gone through a lot, and this just added to my grief and anxiety ... Oceanside (KGTV): The Main Attraction is getting ready for its last dance.The popular topless bar, the last of its kind in the North County, was recently sold. Developers now plan to turn the land it sits on, as well as more than 5 acres around it, into a mixed-use housing project.Papers filed with the City of Oceanside Planning Department show plans for a five story, 308-unit complex that also includes 4,000 square feet of street front retail stores and a six-story parking garage. Wood Partners and Lightfoot Planning Group filed the plans.The land sits just west of the 5 freeway near the intersection of North Coast Highway and Costa Pacifica Way. A vacant lot covers most of the 5.3-acre parcel. A few abandoned warehouses and the strip club stand as the only buildings around."It is exciting," says Leslee Gaul, the CEO of Visit Oceanside. "It’s part of the renaissance in our community, and I think it’s a great location."Gaul's office is right across the street from the topless bar. She works in the California Welcome Center. The Main Attraction is the first thing most visitors see when they get off the freeway in Oceanside.Gaul says the club has been a good neighbor, but she's ready for the change."It’s been a low key, positive relationship for many years," she says. "But as things change and our community changes, this is part of that."Homes within the complex will range from a 550 square foot studio to 1,550 square foot townhomes. The majority of the 308 units will be either one or two-bedroom apartments. Meanwhile, the plans from the developer say residents will have modern amenities, including "an indoor‐outdoor social lounge with pool access and catering kitchen, a fitness center, an artist center, bicycle room, and surfboard storage." There will also be a 5th‐floor deck with an ocean view.Phone calls to the developer, the city and the topless bar weren't returned this week. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Oceanside has unveiled its latest effort to achieve their zero waste goals set back in 2011.Green Oceanside Kitchen is a state-of-the-art food recovery and preservation facility dedicated to eliminating waste and feeding the community."We need to do better, we need to feed our community and educate our community," said Colleen Foster, the City's Environmental Officer. The City teamed up with O'Side Kitchen Collaborative for the new project. They'll collect unwanted food from farmers, backyards, and food businesses, turning the goods into something delicious. "I could've done anything, but for me, making an impact in my community as well as it tasting good is the best!" said Vallie Gilley, Executive Director of O' side Kitchen Collaborative. The facility includes a 1,700 square foot commercial kitchen and a 500 square foot fridge that can hold about a semi-truck load of food. There's also an interactive demonstration kitchen for culinary arts training and education. Foster says more than 40 percent of what is grown and produced in the U.S. is wasted. With the new green facility, planners hope to save 20 percent of what would've gone to waste."That's thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of pounds of food," said Foster. The facility was designed to maximize food recovery and preservation with specialty equipment installed throughout.Gillie's team will also be catering events to help support the program. 1475

Ohio State announced that it has canceled its Saturday matchup against Illinois after head coach Ryan Day tested positive for the coronavirus, OSU announced on Friday. Day is the second head coach of a Top 5 team to come down with the virus in recent days.Ohio State confirmed that there has been an increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the athletics program, but declined to say how many have tested positive. Ohio State was slated to leave Columbus on Friday, but after Day and other unnamed members of the team tested positive for COVID-19, the team conducted more testing with the hopes of traveling to Illinois on Saturday hours before kickoff. Earlier this week, Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced he tested positive for the coronavirus, and would not be in attendance for the No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide’s contest against Auburn.The Big Ten requires that coaches isolate for 10 days following a positive coronavirus test. After tomorrow’s matchup at Illinois, Ohio State plays Michigan State on Dec. 5.The coronavirus has played havoc on the college football schedule in recent weeks.One other Big Ten matchup has already been canceled this week, a contest between Minnesota and Wisconsin.
