SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego college student out for a run was attacked by a swarm of bees — stung at least a hundred times — in the North County.Jaeyoung Choi tells ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena that he was running on a bike path near SR-56 and Carmel Valley Road on Aug. 4, when he started noticing the bees."Next thing I know, a couple bees are hitting me thought it was no big deal and then there were a lot more bees and then a lot more bees and then all of a sudden I'm getting swarmed," Choi said.During the attack, Choi said he saw a man in a beekeeper outfit and tried to get help from him, though he was unsuccessful."Did not speak any English at all the beekeeper so I couldn't get the guys info or even know if he's licensed or not, just one guy there, just really weird," Choi said.Eventually, a cyclist came across Choi and called 911, and Choi was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital. There, he learned he had been stung more than 100 times."At the hospital, they pulled out around 150 stingers or so basically swelled up to a balloon," said Choi.Choi says a week since the attack, his body is still reacting and breaking out in hives. He's also still dealing with the medical bills from the incident."I just can't imagine if it were somebody younger or a lot older I definitely think they would've left in a body bag," Choi said.James McDonald, a professional beekeeper and owns Encinitas Bee Company, said based on the bees' behaviors, he believes they were a form of Africanized "Killer Bees," adding that San Diego is home to plenty of them."They're called 'killer bees' for a reason, they kill people," McDonald said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pet parrot gave its owner quite the scare after flying up into a tall tree in La Jolla.The owner, Katie Anthony, said she camped under the tree all night worried about her African Grey parrot named "Sidekick." Anthony said the bird is domesticated and not used to being in the wild.Anthony called the San Diego Fire Department and crews came out to investigate. SDFD Capt. Margot Johnson - who was retiring Wednesday - climbed up to retrieve the bird, but it took a couple tries to get it down. At one point, another firefighter fought off a falcon in the process."We really appreciate it and very very thankful because we didn't think we were ever going to see him again," Anthony said.Sidekick is now safe and sound. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was arrested after deputies say he intentionally drove onto a sidewalk outside an Encinitas bar, seriously injuring several people. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the incident happened on the 500 block of South Coast Highway 101 around 1:20 a.m. Deputies say the man, later identified as Christian Davis, 28, was asked to leave The Saloon Bar because he was too intoxicated. RELATED: Man dies following attack in Vista; suspects at-largeAfter leaving the bar, deputies say Davis got into his rental U-Haul van and intentionally drove it onto the sidewalk, hitting three people. One of the victims was taken to Palomar Medical Center while two others were taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital all with serious injuries. Davis was detained by witnesses at the bar before being taken into custody by deputies. Two of the witnesses were injured while detaining Davis and were taken to Scripps Encinitas hospital with minor injuries. The suspect is facing four felony charges including three of attempted first-degree murder and one of attempted escape with force. Davis is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new program vows to help buy houses for teachers who are working on making it in San Diego.“It's not huge to a lot of people, but it's more space than we've ever had,” says Amy Noble as she takes us on a tour of the new house that she and her husband, Eric, bought in South Orange County. They’re high school educators and got married years ago, but home ownership seemed impossible for them. “The rent for apartments was so much that we really didn't have a good opportunity to save,” says Amy.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Key saving steps helped renter buy her first home“We're the only private company right now that's focusing exclusively on educators,” says Nikki Lowy with Landed.Lowy says the company has already helped about 200 educators buy homes in expensive cities like Denver, Los Angeles and Seattle. Now, the company is making its way into San Diego.“[Teachers] are so important to the safety and well being and health of our communities and yet a lot of them don't see a future in the communities,” Lowy adds.Landed reportedly gives educators half the down payment for the house. In exchange, educators share 25 percent of the investment gain or loss with Landed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man reportedly attacked by four teenagers near Petco Park died Monday morning, family members tell 10News. 56-year-old Edward Leon Starland died several weeks after being attacked and beaten on November 18 around 2 p.m. Several teenagers, including 19-year-old Dominick Wells and three juvenile females ages 14, 15 and 17 were all taken into custody on felony battery charges. RELATED: Arrests made in attack near Petco Park that left man with serious injuriesStarland was found unresponsive after witnesses say he was involved with an argument with the group before being thrown to the ground and attacked.
