Smart and funny. Gossip from the High Road," actor Rob Lowe tweeted."Legend and pioneer "In 1985, Smith won an Emmy for her show "Live at Five" on WNBC, a reporting gig that would span 11 years."I was fortunate enough to work with the amazing Liz Smith. LIVONIA, Mich. — A racially offensive history lesson involving slavery has a Detroit mother outraged and calling out her daughter’s school. The parent Livonia, Michigan says she’s speaking out so no other child has to go through a similar situation. Now, the school is issuing a statement of its own.The lesson came during a seventh-grade social studies lesson at Frost Middle School in Livonia that left student Jade Holt disgusted. “It was weird and uncomfortable,” Jade said. She said her course on the history of slavery included a question that read: “A slave stands before you. This slave has disrespected his master by telling him you are not my master. How will you punish this slave?”“I read the question and typed my answer. It was, 'there will be no punishment because I do not believe in slavery,'” Jade said. “I never want my daughter to feel that way again, the way she felt this morning,” Jade's mother Jaala Holt said. She believes the teacher also isn’t the only one to blame. “Everything has to be approved before it’s given to the children. So, for whomever approved this inappropriate question for seventh graders, I find it asinine for me,” Jaala said.A school spokesperson released the statement below, which read, in part:“Concerns from a parent were brought to our attention this morning, and we have reviewed a social studies assignment given to three classes of our seventh-grade students. We recognize the assignment in question was not constructed appropriately, as we believe in the importance of approaching topics of slavery in any era of world history with the utmost care and consideration.”The principal hasn’t said if anyone has been disciplined. At a minimum, Jaala Holt wants teachers to undergo cultural sensitivity training. This story was originally published by WXYZ in Detroit. 1825

LONDON (AP) — AstraZeneca and Oxford University have acknowledged a manufacturing error that is raising questions about preliminary results of their COVID-19 vaccine.A statement Wednesday describing the error came days after the company and the university described the shots as “highly effective” and made no mention of why some participants didn’t receive as much vaccine as expected. In a surprise, the group of volunteers that got half a dose in the first of their two shots seemed to be better protected than the volunteers who got full doses. The low-dose group was smaller and younger, however, which could have skewed the results, experts say.In a statement obtained by CNN, Oxford elaborated further, saying that a “difference in the manufacturing process” had led to the error. The university said that it discussed the problem with regulators, agreed to complete the late stage trial with two groups, and the problem has since been corrected. 959

LONDON – A recording has reportedly emerged of Tom Cruise laying into the crew of “Mission: Impossible 7” over people not following COVID-19 protocols. The Sun, a British tabloid, was the first to report on the incident, releasing audio of the confrontation on Tuesday. The New York Times and Variety have since confirmed the authenticity of the clip.Cruise apparently became angry when he saw two crew members standing too close together at a computer screen, violating a rule that says people must stand six feet to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. In the profanity-laden audio, the actor can be heard saying, “We are creating thousands of jobs, you mother****ers. I don’t ever want to see it again.”Cruise goes on to say that if he sees anyone on the crew breaking protocol again, they’ll be fired. In his rant, Cruise also said they want the film’s production to be “the gold standard” and that other movies are being made in Hollywood because of them.“We are creating thousands of jobs you mother****ers,” Cruise reportedly said. The Sun did not say when the audio was recorded, but Reuters reports that the filmmakers arrived in London earlier this month. The film, which Cruise is starring in and co-producing, is scheduled to be released next fall. 1265

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A fiery crash involving a big rig has injured three people, two critically, and backed up traffic on a Southern California freeway for miles.Authorities say a truck loaded with concrete and gravel hit a car shortly before 3 p.m. Monday on northbound Interstate 405 in the busy Sepulveda Pass area of Los Angeles. The trailer overturned on top of the car, pinning someone underneath and both vehicles burst into flames.Bystanders stopped and managed to pull the trapped person and two others to safety. However, the three reportedly suffered burns, including the truck driver. Two people were hospitalized in critical condition and the third was in fair condition.Lanes on both sides of the freeway were closed, backing up both northbound and southbound traffic. 787
