SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer signed off Thursday on his .3 billion 2020 budget previously approved by the super majority of the city council.The budget funds the largest infrastructure investment in San Diego’s history and includes more funding for homelessness programs, road repairs, tree trimming services and housing reform.Faulconer appeared to be most excited about the expansion of the Clean San Diego initiative, which aims to clear debris from across the city.The mayor announced during his signing ceremony that million will go toward the expansion of the CSD program, and more crews will be hired to clean up areas citywide 24 hours a day, seven days a week.“We’re restoring pride back in our neighborhoods with every cleanup job, and now we’re investing more resources into ‘Clean SD’ so we can do even more for our communities,” said Faulconer.Funding for the program was more than doubled from Fiscal Year 2019 after Faulconer requested an additional .5 million for its budget.Since the program started in May 2017, more than 3,600 tons of debris have been removed from neighborhoods, canyons, and the San Diego River.Other efforts in the program include an increase in street sweeping in the East Village, sanitizing sidewalks, and graffiti removal. 1302

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and community leaders broke ground Tuesday on a Mission Bay park makeover in honor of a woman who died serving her community. Maruta Gardner was struck and killed by a DUI driver in 2016 while she was removing graffiti. The park in Bonita Cove is being named in her honor and receive a “much-needed makeover” for the playground, city officials say. Security lighting will also be enhanced. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rancho Bernardo High School briefly went on “secure campus” Monday morning after receiving an anonymous threat.According to the school, employees received an email threatening violence against the campus around 9:30 a.m. Monday. The threats weren’t specific to Rancho Bernardo High School, according to a letter sent to parents.Employees notified police, who had officers on campus within a few minutes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County needs to stay off the state watch list for two weeks straight for most schools to reopen in-person. But, some schools won’t have to wait that long.As of Friday afternoon, 56 elementary schools applied for a waiver through the county health department. If approved, it would allow them to bring students back on campus regardless of our status on the state watch list.The waiver is only open to schools serving K-6 students. Once applications are reviewed by the county they’ll be sent to Sacramento.“The state can give input or guidance,” said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. “If we don’t hear back in three days then those will be approved.”Mt. Helix Academy in La Mesa submitted their application this week.“I’m hoping to hear back from the state and the county by next week.” Said Director, Mike Collins. “Our plan is to welcome students back on campus on Monday August 31st when we’re ready for those kids.”The school has been open for summer programs where they implemented new safety measures like masks, frequent cleaning, and social distancing.“I saw all the students had their masks on and I made a big deal, ‘Everyone has their masks on!
