(KGTV) - Not many people have a Coronado bridge story like Bertha Loaiza.Loaiza was 3-years-old in August of 1985 when her mother jumped from the 246-foot tall bridge holding her.The mother and daughter were unconscious when fisherman pulled them out of the harbor. 24-year-old Angelica Medina never took another breath, but responders were able to resuscitate Bertha.“Honestly it’s hard for even me to believe,” said Loaiza, who suffered a broken hip and cataracts in her right eye from the incident, “My memories blocked out — but I’m good now.’Growing up, her family told her that her mother died in a car accident, but she figured out the real story as a teenager after watching an old news clip.“It makes me sad she didn’t have the resources that are available to everybody today,” said Loaiza.Now 36, Loaiza says she was angry at her mom when she first found out. (KGTV) -- While COVID-19 has taken the lives of thousands across the country, one couple has come up with a way for their memories to live on. Rebecca Heiss and Dermot Jevens, from South Carolina, came up with the idea to create a site to honor those who lost their battles to the virus. “This is going to be an entire community built memorial,” says Jevens.“It was frustrating and sad and scary, and realizing that these were people,” says Heiss. “They weren’t just numbers.”“Mourning America” launched in late March. So far, there are 4,500 names posted. The couple has received nearly 100 submissions from families all over the U.S., with the picture and story of their loved one. The couple says some families haven’t been able to give their loved ones a proper memorial. “This lady’s mom passed away in a nursing home. She wasn’t able to be there with her,” says Jevens. “She wasn’t able to go to the funeral. You can feel that pain and almost that release as she was writing and sending in the story.”The couple has not received any submissions from San Diego yet, but they say their mission is to honor each person who has passed from the virus. (KGTV) -- The San Dieguito Union High School District is pausing its expansion of on-campus learning until January amid the coronavirus pandemic.The district said Saturday it originally planned to expand access to campus for one day a week of in-class instruction in November.“In order to provide a safe, stable, and sustainable return to campus, and in consideration of maintaining the integrity of our instructional model, we are moving that date to the week of January 4, 2021, for the remainder of Quarter 2,” the district said.Leading up to January, schools plan to hold meetings with parents and students to review bell schedules.Read the full letter from the district below: 689
