SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 16-year-old boy with a remote-controlled car tried to send 50 packages of methamphetamine across the border, U.S. Border Patrol agents said Tuesday. Agents were guarding the U.S.-Mexico border Sunday at 12:30 a.m. when they saw a person with two duffel bags walking along the secondary border wall. One of the agents who responded to the scene saw the boy hiding in thick brush. He had a remote-controlled car and 55 pounds of meth, agents said. The boy was arrested and will face smuggling charges. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three men who took part in the shotgun slaying of a Pacific Beach resident late last year pleaded guilty Friday to voluntary manslaughter and assault charges.Carlos Yslas, 25; Pedro Ramirez, 27; and Freddy Sosa, 38, were previously facing murder charges in the Dec. 29, 2018, death of 44-year-old Marcanthony Mendivil, who was killed in a home in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue.Yslas, who admitted to firing the shotgun, faces up to 30 years in state prison when he is sentenced Jan. 10.RELATED: Suspects in fatal Pacific Beach shooting to be arraigned; victim identifiedRamirez, who faces eight years in prison, is also due to be sentenced Jan. 10. Sosa also faces eight years in prison and will be sentenced Nov. 15.A fourth defendant, Paul Charles Weinberger, 51, remains charged with murder and assault. He's due back in court next week for a status conference, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 18. Weinberger remains out of custody on million bail.Prosecutors have said that Weinberger lived in the residence where Mendivil was shot in the predawn hours of Dec. 29. However, neither a motive for the slaying, nor the defendants' relationships to each other and the victim, have been disclosed.Officers found Mendivil suffering from a gunshot wound when they responded to a 1:47 a.m. call of a possible shooting last Dec. 29, San Diego Police Lt. Matt Dobbs said.Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m., Dobbs said.Deputy District Attorney Flavio Nominati alleged during Yslas and Ramirez's arraignment earlier this year that both men entered the home masked and gloved.Yslas threatened another witness with the shotgun, then fired twice on Mendivil, the prosecutor said. The men then fled the scene in a vehicle, according to Nominati.Weinberger and Sosa were arrested the day of the killing, while Yslas and Ramirez were already in custody on unrelated charges when they were re- arrested and charged in February in connection with the killing. 2030

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Celebrity Cruise Line ship docked at the Port of San Diego Monday, pulling into the Embarcadero just before sunrise. More than 1,500 passengers were on board the "Eclipse," including Mali Lev-Ram and her husband. The couple started the cruise on March 1 in Buenos Aires. They were supposed to get off in Chile March 15, but the cruise was turned away because of concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. "It was frustrating, but everyone I have to say was very patient, we trusted that the crew are doing their best to do everything they can for us," said Lev-Ram.RELATED: San Diego issues health orders on cruise ships amid COVID-19San Diego County health officials said no one on board had shown symptoms of the virus, but precautions are being taken. Customs officers boarded the ship wearing masks. All passengers will go through a medical screening before going home to self-quarantine for fourteen days."We are very happy. My husband was so emotional to see San Diego, we were a little crying even, we were very happy," said Lev-Ram. 1063

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Symphony canceled the remainder of its 2020 season today as COVID-19-related closures drag on, with some performances canceled through May 2021.All Jacobs Masterworks concerts at Copley Symphony Hall at Jacobs Music Center have been canceled through Dec. 31. In addition, all special concerts and all concerts in the Broadway at the Jacobs, Jazz at the Jacobs, Fox Film and Family concert series have been canceled through May 2021.As a result of the cancellations and to simplify the ticketing process, the company will automatically move any 2020/21 subscription into the 2021/22 season. Symphony staff plans to share details of the 2021/22 season programming in April 2021.``While our venues -- Copley Symphony Hall at Jacobs Music Center, and The Shell -- remain closed, we continue to connect with our audiences and each other through a variety of digital programs and the sharing of socially distanced performances by our musicians on social media,'' a statement on the symphony's social media read.``Thank you for the incredible loyalty and support you have shown to the symphony during this challenging time. We will get through this challenge and emerge a stronger organization and orchestra thanks to you.''The symphony has been closed since mid-March due to the pandemic, along with most other entertainment venues. A scheduled opening of ``The Shell,'' the symphony's new million outdoor home along the San Diego Bay, was scheduled for July 10, but Martha Gilmer, the symphony's CEO, canceled the opening in May and decided to push it to summer 2021. 1606

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A company with offices in Oceanside released data Friday supporting its drug remdesivir is helping severely ill COVID-19 patients recover. The data released by Gilead, who produces remdesivir, states there was a 62% reduction in risk of death, compared to patients who weren't given the drug, and 74% of remdesivir treated patients recovered by Day 14.Remdesivir was originally created to fight Ebola, a similar virus to COVID-19.Troy Kahle was diagnosed with COVID-19 and said he's alive today because of Kaiser Permanente doctors, nurses and remdesivir. He said he was admitted to the hospital March 14, and ended up in a coma for 12 days."The first memory I have is waking up with my hands strapped to the gurney and a tube down my throat," Kahle said he thought he was going to die and wishes no one to face what still haunts him.Friday he celebrated three months out of the hospital as a survivor of COVID-19.While the drug has helped people like Kahle, medical experts are wary."It's not a magic bullet," Molecular Biology Professor at UC San Diego Stephen Hedrick, PhD. said.He said the drug slows down the virus."It's going to decrease the severity of the symptoms of the viral infection, but it doesn't necessarily make you well overnight," he said comparing it to an antibiotic. This is because while the drug works to stop the virus from replicating, COVID-19 can counter it, "Coronaviruses, almost uniquely among RNA viruses, have an error correction capability."Survivors like Kahle, while thankful to be out of the hospital, aren't back to 100%."I get easily winded if I overexert myself, occasionally I'll get dizzy for no reason, I have foot pain when I wake up," Kahle said.Hedrick said he is optimistic, adding the drug is a good jumping off point to create a drug more suited to coronavirus, or a vaccine. In the mean-time both Kahle and Hedrick ask that we all wear our masks."If we all work together we can get to the other side of this pandemic," Kahle said.Gilead said they are ramping up supplies, "we have increased supply nearly 40-fold since January and our goal is to produce more than 2 million treatment courses by year-end and several million in 2021, if required."Gilead cautions that rigorous clinical trials are needed to confirm the latest data. 2303
