SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Saturday, San Diego County reported a record 1,478 new coronavirus cases and six additional deaths, bringing the county's totals to 70,709 cases and 966 fatalities.Saturday's new cases yielded a 7% positivity rate out of 21,947 tests reported. The new daily case report marks the third time in a week that the county has reported more than 1,000 new cases. It was also the 11th-straight day the county reported at least 600 new cases.Eleven new community outbreaks were also confirmed on Friday: Three in business settings, three in faith-based settings, two in childcare settings, one in a TK-12 school setting, one in a restaurant/bar setting, and one in a gym setting. "Now more than ever it is vital that San Diegans avoid gatherings and crowds, wear a face covering when they are out in public and stay home if they are sick."Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 continues to rise as well, with 440 hospitalized and 127 in intensive care. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sick and tired over school shootings, a Point Loma High School junior is trying to make change through one of his passions.He participated in Public Service Announcement contest, a collaboration between San Diego Crime Stoppers and the San Diego Unified School District Police Department. Students were required to create a PSA about an issue schools deal with, like bullying or substance abuse.Tim Fraher's 40-second PSA addressed school shootings, raising awareness about the ways it's easier to get a gun than a driver's license. He also wants people to take notice if a friend or classmate is getting bullied or seems depressed.Fraher says he wants people to take school shootings seriously."We need to do something. We can't just sit around and pray that it will go away because it won't. We need to actually get out there and actively reform and make changes so that this won't happen," said Fraher.Fraher won the competition, and his PSA will air on television in the San Diego region this June. "It felt good to know that the message will get across, that it will be out there," said Fraher.He hopes the 40-second message will encourage others to take a chance at making a change. 1216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's top Democratic candidates for mayor squared off on the debate stage Friday. The big theme of the night was housing and homelessness, and Assemblymember Todd Gloria, Councilmember Barbara Bry, and community activist Tasha Williamson came prepared with answers."I will move homeless services to the offices of the mayor, currently it's outsourced to the housing administration, it sends a message its not a priority for this mayor or this City Hall," Gloria said.Gloria put the onus on himself if elected to solve homelessness, while Bry had a more collaborative approach, wanting to pressure the county for more help."I believe it is much more effective to send social workers out with iPads to talk to homeless individuals where they are, to send out social workers, not police officers," Bry said.But the biggest applause lines of the night came from political outsider Williamson, who pushed her platform for police oversight."We have been criminalized all our lives and the time is up, the time is now, we are going to stop it, we are going to be a sweeping sea of change when we talk about police accountability, rogue officers do not belong here, they will have too look for another job somewhere else," Williamson said.But it was the scooter issue that brought out the biggest punches."A few days ago I talked to [the San Diegan] who's wife is in critical condition at UCSD with skull fractures and severe bleeding after falling off a scooter, I was in tears after talking with him," Bry started. She went on to blame Gloria for sponsoring state legislation that made it legal for adults to ride scooters without requiring helmets. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say a man has died after an officer-involved shooting in the City Heights area on Thursday.SDPD officers responded to reports of a man with a gun in the 4200 block of Menlo Ave. at about 4 p.m., according to SDPD Lt. Matt Dobbs.Police say two women were driving in the area when they were confronted by a man with a handgun."The man manipulated the slide of the gun as if he were loading it and pointed the gun towards the women," according to a SDPD news release. The women drove away and then called 911.Officers arrived to find the man and demanded he drop the gun. 612

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo and Safari Park hope to reopen "in the coming weeks" now that California has released guidance for zoos to open their gates starting Friday.Last week, the state released guidance for county's approved for accelerated reopenings to open businesses like zoos, family entertainment centers, gyms, bars and wineries, and more starting June 12.(The state's criteria for sectors can be found here.)In a statement to 10News, the zoo said staff are reviewing the state's guidance to plan how to best reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic:"We are delighted to receive word from the Governor letting us know that the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park will be able to open this month. We can’t wait to invite our community back to the zoo and park in the coming weeks. We have just received information from the State regarding the requirements and guidelines for us to re-open and are reviewing this document so we can determine next steps to open safely and responsibly for our community.
