SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Data obtained by ABC 10News showed there were more than 150 complaints made to 211 involving a Pacific Beach gym’s violations of public health orders.The data regarding The Gym was compiled starting April 8; overall, there were more than 9,300 complaints from that time period involving violations of public health orders throughout San Diego County.Troy Kahle said he and his husband have been members of The Gym, located on 2949 Garnet Ave., for more than 20 years. Kahle is also a COVID-19 survivor, and he said he’s not sure how he contracted the virus.Kahle has not been to The Gym since he went to the hospital. His husband last went on July 3, and decided it was not safe.RELATED: County confirms coronavirus outbreak at Pacific Beach gym"There are no safety barriers, there are no hand sanitizers, no one is wearing a mask, and no one is socially distancing," Kahle said, passing along what his husband told him from his July 3 gym visit.On July 15, public health orders forced several businesses to close indoor operations, including gyms. But Kahle said they noticed The Gym kept their doors open.Kahle and his husband notified 211 about The Gym's indoor activities on more than one occasion. He said their goal was to prevent the spread of the virus."I can't believe they stayed open as long as they have," Kahle said.During Wednesday's news conference, San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten confirmed there was an outbreak associated with The Gym.The county had ordered it to close last week; The Gym closed on Monday."Last week, when we were working with them to close, we didn't know there was an outbreak there," Wooten said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As schools reopen with distance learning, a local nonprofit is working to bridge the digital divide during a critical time.Tammy Hershfield co-founded Computers 2 San Diego Kids 17 years ago, providing refurbished computers to low-income children. She says the local digital divide remains a big one."One in four children in San Diego don't have computer in their home, and 50 percent of those are low income families," said Hershfield.The digital divide is now even more concerning because of COVID-19, as students begin the school year with distance learning."These kids were already at a disadvantage. They were having to do their learning just in the classroom. Not they don't even have that, so we need to get them these computers," said Hershfield.Since the pandemic started, the nonprofit has refurbished and distributed nearly 18,000 computers to local kids. Dozens of volunteers and staff are working on the computers every day."We hired 14 additional staff. We're open six days a week, working 10 hours a day to get things done," said Hershfield.Families receiving the computers pick up the computers at the nonprofit's warehouse in the Miramar area. Hershfield remembers one family, a furloughed single mother of 4 with a 17-year-old daughter applying for college and loans on a phone. That family received two computers."Mom cried, and I cried. The digital disparity is real, and COVID-19 has put a on shining light on it. We can band together and help the people that need the help," said Hershfield.Hershfield says they have about 6,000 computers being worked on and need more donated computers.The nonprofit has partnered with Cox Communications to include free internet access for up to four months. 1742

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County health officials are encouraging local women to get vaccinated for "whooping cough" amid a possible epidemic.The county says pertussis, commonly known as "whooping cough," could turn into a possible local epidemic based on historical patterns."It’s critical for pregnant women and people who come into close contact with young infants to get vaccinated," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. "Newborns are very susceptible to whooping cough because they are too young to be fully vaccinated. It is vital for pregnant women to be vaccinated in the third trimester to give protection to their unborn infants."So far in 2018, there have been 56 confirmed cases of pertussis.RELATED: This app says it can help you stay flu-freeLast year, San Diego County recorded at least 1,154 cases, the highest of any county in California. Wooten said the high numbers were partially attributed to reporting methods."Pertussis activity in our region appears to higher than the rest of the state, but much of this is due to the excellent detection and reporting of this potentially deadly disease by San Diego pediatricians and family physicians," Wooten said.Pertussis is a cyclical disease that peaks every three to five years, according to health officials.
