SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thursday night, the State Board of Education voted to decline the renewal charters for all four Thrive Charter Schools in San Diego. They explain the test scores are too low and keep dropping. The vote technically didn't carry because the board needs six votes to pass any motion. The vote Thursday night was four to two, not all members were present for the vote. If the schools are forced to shut down, nearly 1,000 students would have to look for new schools at the end of the school year. She tells me this is her daughter's first year, "it's been a Godsend because I was so done with not being able to have LeLe brought up to her potential in the public schools". This school year, Buehler moved her daughter to Thrive and says she doesn't think the state board should shut the schools down solely based on that, "it's mind-blowing because this is going to change so many students lives, not the better, and it’s a shame that it's based on numbers on a paper when you actually see these are future leaders in our community."Meanwhile, some parents have already contacted the San Diego Unified School District to enroll their children for next year. The District Operations Support Officer, Marceline Marques, tells 10News, "in the past 24 hours, we've already placed 60 students throughout the district from Thrive". This will mark just the second appearance at Petco Park for the Astros since joining the American League and the third visit to Petco Park for the Angels,” the team said.“For Interleague road contests, the Padres will visit Texas (August 17-18), Los Angeles (September 1-2), Oakland (September 4-6) and Seattle (September 18-20). The club’s visit to Texas’ Globe Life Field will be its first to the brand-new ballpark.”Three of the team’s four home weekends will be against National League West opponents, including a total of two weekend series against the Diamondbacks and one against the Giants. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego County jail system is being blamed after a part of a former inmate’s cheek was bitten off by another inmate who was mentally ill.10News was at Thursday afternoon’s press conference where their families accused the jail system of failing to provide adequate mental health resources. “I felt unprotected,” says Miguel Lucas. Lucas now has a scar running across his cheek. It comes after he says part of his face was bitten in an unprovoked attack by inmate Reginald Harmon. It happened in June at the Central Jail.Harmon is still behind bars, but now family members and supporters of both men are coming together to say the jail system that's run by the San Diego County sheriff's Department needs reform. “I was sick to my stomach and I was very upset with the jail,” says Harmon’s mother, Alicia Muhammad. She says that days before he got jailed, she made repeated calls to the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) hoping for intervention, but each time he was discharged. After being arrested for suspected DUI, she says she warned the jail. “I spoke with the lady at the front desk and advised her that my son had mental issues and she said, ‘Okay.’ She would let the guards know,” she adds.However, she says her son wasn't placed into a mental health unit. Even after he reportedly attacked a different inmate, the families say he was placed in a lower security unit and neglected by mental health providers for two days, until he attacked Lucas. “It’s just unfortunate that people had to go through what I went through and what people are still going through to this day,” says Lucas. Following the attack, the families of both men connected and found a friendship. Currently, Lucas is living with Harmon’s aunt and attends church with the Harmon’s family. Lucas did not want to press charges, expressing that he knew Harmon was having mental health issues at the time of the attack.The families plan to file a civil lawsuit against the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in the next few months. The Sheriff’s Department sent 10News the following statement on Thursday:“The San Diego County Sheriff's Department investigated the assault on Miguel Lucas and forwarded the case to the District Attorney's Office. Reginald Harmon was charged with one count of aggravated mayhem. Lucas and Harmon were properly classified and housed at the time of the incident. Inmates are assigned to different facilities or housing units for a variety of reasons, including classification, bed space considerations, medical or mental needs, or issues with other inmates. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There is new hope for women who were told they could never get pregnant. A local clinic is offering groundbreaking fertility procedures you won't find anywhere else. For 48-year-old Cherie Friesth, this Carmel Valley clinic is giving her hope. "This just gives you a little help and a boost towards that goal," said Friesth.She's already a mother of four and a grandmother of eight, but she wants one more. "This will make it nice that [my son] has someone to look out for and play with."She came all the way from Iowa for Ovarian Rejuvenation. Gen 5 Fertility helps women increase their chances of getting pregnant through Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP. Dr. Samuel Wood is giving them hope. Most of his patients are over the age of 42. "In most cases these women have gone to other fertility centers and have been told 'you have no chance, we’re not going to work with you'", said Wood. The procedure works by isolating platelets from the blood and injecting them back into the ovaries. It helps recruit stem cells that can turn into eggs. "She did not do well in terms of egg number, but it improved the quality of the egg so that we got an embryo that was actually normal in a woman who is 48 years old, and that’s extremely unusual," said Wood.
