SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s one of the few drugs shown to help fight the novel coronavirus, and a large federal study on remdesivir just entered a new phase.Previous research sponsored by the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Disease showed remdesivir shortened recovery time in hospitalized COVID-19 patients on average from 15 days to 11 days.Now scientists and doctors are racing to find the perfect cocktail against COVD-19 by blending remdesivir with other drugs.California-based Gilead Sciences originally developed the drug to fight Ebola, but remdesivir was never approved. Gilead Sciences has offices in Oceanside.The drug works by interrupting the virus’ ability to replicate.“Remdesivir acts by shutting down virus production,” said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease expert at University of California San Francisco. “It just forces the virus to stop making virus children.”Dr. Chin-Hong is studying remdesivir as part of the NIAID research.The problem is that stopping the virus from replicating isn’t enough for some severely ill patients. They suffer from a second problem: massive inflammation from the immune system’s war with the virus.That’s why scientists are trying a cocktail approach.“You have the virus to take care of, but you also have the body's response to the virus, which is inflammation, that you also have to take care of,” said Dr. Chin-Hong.Researchers started testing the first drug cocktail in May, using an arthritis drug called baricitinib that tames inflammation.But as the data on that part of the study gets crunched, researchers began testing the second cocktail this month, a combination of remdesivir and interferon beta.“Interferon beta is something we produce naturally to fight viruses,” said Dr. Chin-Hong. He said studies have shown people who don’t produce enough interferon beta struggle to fight off the virus.Researchers selected interferon beta after two small studies showed promising results against the coronavirus.Interferon beta can both reduce inflammation and kill viruses, so doctors are hoping it will be a potent one-two punch with remdesivir.Dr. Chin-Hong said he and other researchers started administering the new cocktail this month.Some patients will receive the cocktail, some will receive a placebo, and some will get remdesivir only. This kind of clinical trial is called an adaptive trial, which the FDA started encouraging in 2004. After each phase, the winning drug or cocktail will be tested against a new challenger.Dr. Chin-Hong said the eventual cocktail may include three or more drugs, similar to HIV medication. 2617

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In recent weeks colorful bikes have filled the streets of San Diego. Dockless bike ridesharing companies were ready to go once the City Attorney's Office said they could operate. The city says LimeBike, Ofo, Mobike and Bird Scooter all have the proper licenses to operate here.LimeBike says in just two weeks they've logged 30,000 rides.The San Diego Bike Coalition supports the companies and believes the accessibility and affordability will help the city in its climate action plan. However, some residents have major concerns with the bikes, reporting that they're being left in the middle of sidewalks and on people's property. They've also witnessed scooter riders not wearing a helmet and people riding where they're not supposed to.Zack Bartlett, the general manager for LimeBike in San Diego, says they have an operations team patrolling the city 24/7 to run safety checks and reposition bikes improperly parked. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Kids, parents, and youth sports leaders held a protest in front of the San Diego County Administration Building on Saturday to voice their concerns over the state’s regulations regarding games and competitions.Currently, under California coronavirus restrictions, youth sports can practice, as long as six feet of social distancing can be maintained, but they can't play games. People who gathered Saturday said the lack of games is taking a toll on the youth.“Thank you for honoring our safety but I think our mental health is important as well and for that to be good and top-notch, we need to be allowed to play our sports and escape from life,” said 7th grader Zoey Hagan, who stood with other girls in her soccer club.Bob Turner is both Executive Director of Presidio Soccer League and President of the Southern California Youth Soccer Association and said the athletes should be able to play games. He said they have created safety plans, including spacing out the times of games and shortening games to avoid crowds, only allowing one parent for each athlete, and also requiring masks of all referees, parents, and substitute players. Turner said they’ve sent countless letters and filled-out petitions to the state, but have not gotten a response. A spokesperson for San Diego County said the county has also been asked about plans for youth sports. They also asked the state and have not heard about what’s next.“This is small potatoes to them compared to a lot of the other things opening but it is our youth and what’s more important than our kids. We’re destroying these kids with what’s happening through the schools and now we’re taking this away. This is the only outlet some of these kids have,” said Turner.At Saturday’s protest, speakers took turns sharing their personal experiences. One parent questioned why other businesses can operate, but these athletes can’t play games.“It is infuriating to me that we’ll open up beaches, we’ll open up Home Depot, we’ll open up restaurants. These people can make their money. We can take care of the adults and make sure they’re doing well, but our kids are sequestered?” he said, addressing the crowd.After a handful of speakers comprised of parents and athletes took to the podium, a group of young athletes held a 'what about us' banner and marched around the admin building while chanting "let us play." 2394

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In preparation for one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is planning security upgrades to its airfield perimeter fence.10News discovered it’s one of nine large-scale construction projects that Miramar will be doing over the next decade."These construction projects here are what enables, that is what brings our national defense policy and strategy to reality," said Public Works Officer Lt. Commander Travis Brinkman.Currently being built in the heart of MCAS Miramar is a 160,000 square foot hangar is designed to hold up to 12 F-35s.It's the first of three hangars planned for the location."The need to provide modern facilities as well as the F-35 has specific requirements, specific systems that need different maintenance, different capabilities within the facility itself to provide that maintenance,” said Brinkman. According to a post on the Federal Business Opportunities website, MCAS Miramar is also looking to replace more than 24,000 feet of existing chain link fence, vehicle gates, and swing arm barriers.According to the site, “The project magnitude is ,000,000 to ,000,000.”"We're upgrading the fence line around the airfield itself, and it’s simply to ensure that our fence line is complying with the security requirements for the F-35,” said Brinkman.
