SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego is the seventh-best university and the best public school in the country, according to just-released rankings from Washington Monthly.UCSD fell slightly in the nonprofit magazine's rankings compared to 2017, when the school ranked sixth overall but second to Texas A&M among public universities. Harvard took over the top spot on the list from Stanford, first on last year's list, with MIT, Princeton and Yale rounding out the top five.Washington Monthly ranks schools based on a number of factors, the theme being how positively each school impacts its community and the country at large. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Chula Vista woman is keeping vigil after her parents holiday vacation turned into nightmare, when both become sick with COVID-19.Jose and Gloria Arellano had a dilemma. Their daughter Joselyn says they had airfare credits from a postponed trip to southern Mexico but the deadline to use the credits was about the run out."They had their trip postpone the trip two or three times. They didn't want to lose the money, so they decided to go this time.On November 11, they flew out from Tijuana to Oaxaca for a two-week vacation. Apprehensive about rising COVID-19 rates, they went prepared with goggles and masks. Gloria also had a face shield. Once there, they did a little sightseeing. When they were near anybody, they wore masks."Their main thing is to try food. They were mostly at restaurants. They were also at the beach a lot," said Joselyn.About six days into their trip, Jose, 56, became sick."For him, it was coughing. He has asthma, and it just got into his lungs," said Joselyn.A few days later, Gloria, 54, also became ill. They went to a local hospital, received COVID-19 tests, and tested positive. Jose got sicker and the family contracted at air ambulance to fly him back to San Diego two days before Thanksgiving.Jose, a former investigator with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office and former Navy, is being treated at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla."He's been stabile, on a ventilator and taking antibiotics," said Joselyn.Joselyn calls her father's situation a helpless waiting game. Her mother ended up in a hospital in Oaxaca, intubated for several days, before being released Monday. Right now, she's quarantining at an Airbnb in Oaxaca."It's a vacation, for them, they’ll regret forever," said Joselyn.Joselyn is trying to stay optimistic with so much uncertainty about her father. She is certain about one thing. There will be no vacations in her family's near future."It's not worth it. It's not worth the risk," said Joselyn.Joselyn's brother flew to Oaxaca to help their mother. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A cheating scandal on a California State Board of Pharmacy exam has left 1,400 recent graduates unlicensed and unable to work, forcing some to deny job offers as their student loans become due.The board announced this week it invalidated all test scores on the California Practice Standards and Jurisprudence Examination for Pharmacists (CPJE) administered since July after it found evidence of "wide-scale subversion" of the exam.Board investigators determined more than 100 test questions were shared online. The CPJE is a critical step in the licensure process for new pharmacists."The board sincerely regrets that the actions of some are negatively impacting the lives of many," the board wrote in a statement posted Wednesday. "California consumers must have confidence that individuals passing a licensing exam have the requisite knowledge and skills to practice safely and competently."Some graduates working as interns in pharmacies while waiting for their license said they had lost their jobs over the licensing delay. Others said they had to turn down job offers."Our loans are increasing, we are all financially burdened as we can't find jobs until we take this exam," one test-taker wrote in an email to 10News. "People are very frustrated in the lack of communication from the board. We are being punished over other people's mistakes. We don't deserve this."The board is offering pharmacist applicants a chance to retake the test on November 16 and 17, and said it would "work diligently to expedite the results." That means applicants likely wouldn't be licensed and ready to work until December, leaving some who expected to begin working by late August in a financially stressful situation."Most people study for this exam for one to two months," said another test-taker. SAN DIEGO (Daily Aztec) - San Diego State men’s basketball returned in triumphant fashion to the friendly confines of Viejas Arena, defeating Jackson State 87-44 in front of a crowd of 10,453 on Tuesday night.SDSU (4-2), just six days removed from competing in the Maui Invitational in Maui, Hawaii, scored the first 11 points and never trailed in a wire-to-wire victory over the Tigers.In Maui, SDSU came away victorious against defending Big East champion Xavier, but struggled in losses to Duke and Iowa State, falling by deficits of 30 and 26 points, respectively.  Head coach Brian Dutcher said the game was a chance for the Aztecs to show what they were made of, following tough defeats.“We were challenged against Xavier and came back, we were challenged against Iowa State and didn’t fight hard enough,” Dutcher said. “So I said this is the next challenge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A crucial part of the fight to end food insecurity depends on community donations. And the most significant impact often comes from a group of strangers that come together to donate, volunteer, and distribute. “I want to say the excess food we have is maybe 75 pounds to 100 pounds every couple of weeks,” said Adam Sapinoso. Sapinoso works for National Food Group, a wholesale food service distributor in San Diego. From time to time, his inventory exceeds his client's needs leaving him with additional food that he doesn’t need. That food is often tossed out. “It was just hard seeing that much food being thrown away, especially when you’re the one physically throwing it in the dumpster,” said Sapinoso. Looking for a solution, he turned to Feeding San Diego’s app called Meal Connect. This app connects restaurants and companies with Feeding San Diego volunteers. Those volunteers pick up excess food from companies and restaurants when it is most convenient for the company. Donate now to Month of a Million MealsThe volunteer then heads to one of Feeding San Diego’s distribution locations to drop off the donations. The food is then unpacked and sorted out and distributed to the community. One of those sites is Wesley Community Services Center in City Heights.“When we started, this program was upstairs with coffee and donuts.
