SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The sidewalks surrounding Ahmed Al Barak's corner market in one of San Francisco's roughest neighborhoods are filled with cardboard, used syringes and homeless people who have nowhere safe to go at night.But Al Barak says it's an improvement from a year ago, before the city posted a portable toilet across the street from his business in the city's Tenderloin district.He no longer regularly sees people relieve themselves in broad daylight, and he does not see as much feces and urine on the streets. In his opinion, it's the one bright spot in a city where taxes are too high."We used to have a disaster here. I used to call the city all the time to come and clean, because they don't know where to go," he said, recalling one woman in particular who shrugged at him in a "what can you do?" gesture as she squatted to pee.San Francisco started its "Pit Stop" program in July 2014 with public toilets in the city's homeless-heavy Tenderloin, after children complained of dodging human waste on their way to school. Today, the staffed bathrooms have grown from three to 25 locations, and the program has expanded to Los Angeles. In May, the toilets in San Francisco recorded nearly 50,000 flushes, all logged by attendants.The condition of San Francisco's streets has been a source of embarrassment to city leaders, and cleaning up is not cheap. The city received nearly 27,000 requests for feces removal in the most recent fiscal year, although not all are human.Mayor London Breed last year announced the formation of a special six-person "poop patrol" team where each cleaner earns more than ,000 a year.Advocates say steam cleaning requests have dropped in areas surrounding some of the public toilets. The mayor signed a budget Thursday that includes more than million for the Pit Stop toilets this year, up from million last fiscal year. San Francisco will add seven new bathrooms in a city where a one-night count of homeless people grew 17% in the past two years.The toilets each cost an average of 0,000 a year to operate, with most of the money going to staffing and overhead.Some of the bathrooms are permanent fixtures, while others are portables with two toilets that are trucked in and out. The stops have receptacles for used syringes and dog waste. Attendants who are paid the city's minimum wage of an hour check after every use and knock on doors to make sure people are not doing drugs or other illicit activity. The bathrooms must shine or they do not open.The staffing is what makes a toilet a Pit Stop, and the work is usually done by men coming out of prison after decades behind bars.The "practitioners" stand guard at some of society's bleakest intersections of poverty, addiction and mental illness, says Lena Miller, founder of nonprofit Hunters Point Family and its spinoff, Urban Alchemy, which staffs the Pit Stops in San Francisco and Los Angeles. They prevent overdoses, break up fights and greet regulars, she says."Really what we're doing is we're creating this space where people know that they can walk into it, and it's going to smell good. It's going to look good," Miller said. "There won't be trash everywhere, and they're safe. And I think that makes all the difference in the world."Nelson Butler was a 19-year-old Los Angeles gangster when he went to prison for 30 years for killing a person. Butler was released last year from San Quentin State Prison, scared and apprehensive and in need of a job. He went to work at a Pit Stop.Technically, his job was to prevent drug use in the bathrooms and make sure homeless people didn't set up camp."The reality is I'm a security guard. I was a babysitter, I was a social worker, I was a counselor. I did a lot of things that was not necessarily in the scope of my job description, but this is my community," Butler said. "So my thought was, if I saw somebody that needed help, that's why I'm there — to help."Homelessness has surged throughout California, and cities are struggling to open more bathrooms. Officials are considering adding port-a-potties and special loos designed by the city of Portland, Oregon, and expanding hours of restrooms in government buildings.Sacramento, which is in a county where a one-night count of the homeless increased 19% in two years, tried a Pit Stop but stopped after a few months because it cost too much.Los Angeles Councilmember Mike Bonin initially thought the stops too pricey, but he now understands that having someone to watch over the bathrooms has its upsides. Los Angeles saw a 16% increase over a year in its one-night count of homeless, to 36,000."I heard from everyone, from people affiliated with law enforcement, from people who live in the neighborhood, from homeless advocates, from people who are homeless themselves, that it's important to have a staff to make sure they stay clean and free of destruction or abuse," he said.Down the street from Ahmed Al Barak's corner market is Aref Elgaali's Z Zoul, a Sudanese cafe. The public bathroom by his eatery has helped, he says, but it closes too early, and there should be many more of the toilets."Why not to have in this corner one and that corner one and the other corner one? That will solve a lot of problems for the people here in San Francisco," he said. 5298

SEATTLE — If you’re eating seafood in the US, there is a good chance it came through Seattle. Just like everyone else, they’ve had to adjust during the pandemic.“We’ve converted our whole operation like a little shipping factory and so we’ve really changed our focus from over the counter service to trying really hard to drive our online presence,” said Reese. Ryan says they’ve been lucky to stay busy shipping fish out to customers.“People still need to eat everyday and they’re cooking at home and luckily they think of us and we ship overnight and so we’re feeling grateful,” said Reese. What we found is it’s kind of a mixed bag with the seafood industry; some companies are adapting really well and getting their product to people and other companies are really struggling and their sales are down from 10% to 40%. “You got to have your gear in perfect condition, it’s gotta be fishing for you, that’s what makes the money,” said Cub Jansen, fishing captain. Cub is doing some maintenance work on one of his boats. He and his crew had a tough season.“The biggest thing would be the price difference. You know, we’ve been hurting on price. Typically in Alaska, we’d get paid per pound for crab, but this year, we got paid .85 per pound. There’s no casinos buying, no cruise ships, there’s limited capacity at restaurants, so it’s made for a tough market,” said Jansen.When you have no place to sell your catch, that can crush an industry.“This year has really hurt our crews and our boat owners earnings,” said Bob Alverson, the manager of the Fishing Vessels Owner’s Association. He says his members are hurting.“The earnings for our crews and the boats are off about 30 to 40%,” said Alverson.There are two huge reasons. First, seafood is mostly sold in restaurants and COVID-19 restrictions have been hard on those businesses.“The restaurant trade is where we make our living a lot and I feel sorry for the waiters and waitresses’ businesses. They have really been hit hard. And anyone who depends on selling their product through the restaurant trade has been similarly hit,” said Alverson.Second, exports to Japan and China have essentially dried up since the pandemic.“We’ve lost our overseas markets to China, which buy the vast majority of our live crab,” said Jansen.That leaves this group of hardworking people with a lot of questions.“The biggest thing with the COVID stuff is, am I going to have a market tomorrow? Am I going to be able to sell this crab or salmon that I have on the boat? Or is everything going to shutdown?” said Jansen. Those are the type of questions that make you lose sleep at night.But it’s not the first time this industry has been hit hard, and it certainly won’t be the last. Maybe you wouldn’t know by looking at them, but fisherman tend to be ocean half full type of people.“In the fish business, everybody is an optimist. Next year can always be better than this year,” said Alverson.“There’s a lot of heritage and a lot of pride. It’s a hard working community,” said Reese. “We all need each other,” said Jansen. We all need each other, a simple phrase that might apply to more than just the fishing community during this pandemic. 3813

Jessica Bell says she battled health issues, so she and her husband came up with the idea for safer food containers."It just isn't the way I wanted to live my life," she says in reference to her illnesses.So for one, she decided to eat healthier food, and at the same time, steer away from storing food in plastic containers."I realized I had to take out the things that were contributing to disease. Trying to avoid that contact that food has with those plastic chemicals. We want to be a force for change there.."And the action she took was forming a company with her husband called ReVessel."The idea of a container that can be transported and have all these modular features."Made of stainless steel and silicon, the food storage kits, as they are called, were developed with the help of deep sea engineers. and with one top priority. "Leak proofing," she says. "it's an opportunity for people to carry their lunch anywhere, whether it's in a backpack or purse."But there is more to these storage kits, as they are also environmentally safe."The average number of sandwich bags that children are carrying is about four, and that's daily. Most of them are ending up in the landfill."Jessica calls her kits, "storage anywhere food ware", and with the COVID-19 pandemic, they've teamed up with local restaurants and farms, to deliver healthy food in the kits, to front line workers. "We put together over 200 meals, and we sent these out to front line workers. They can keep these containers and reuse them. We looked at this as a way we could donate meals to our front line healthcare workers, where health really starts." 1855

(KGTV) — Deputies are searching for a man who attempted to lure a child into his vehicle this week.A driver pulled alongside a nine-year-old girl riding her bike in the 8000 block of Poplin Dr. in Santee at about 6 p.m. Thursday and asked her if she would like a ride to a "game," San Diego Sheriff's Department says.The girl became scared and rode her bicycle back to her house. She was not injured, according to deputies. The suspect was described as a Caucasian male, about 60- to 70-years-old, with white hair, and wearing a red hat and chrome sunglasses. His vehicle was described as a 2-door, silver convertible with a black top, possibly a Honda. SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - New upgrades at the Health Occupations Center are allowing students in the medical fields to continue their hands-on training during the Coronavirus Pandemic."These students can't go do clinicals in a hospital like they used to be able to," says Barry Jantz, the CEO of the Grossmont Healthcare District. "So it's even more important that we've got these kinds of abilities and facilities for students to train."Thanks to a bond passed by the voters, and a 0,000 grant from the Grossmont Healthcare District, the HOC recently finished construction on two state-of-the-art classroom and lab buildings. They also bought new, life-like mannequins and an ambulance simulator."It's very realistic," says Nursing Student Nyna Huynh. "Everything we do, from the pulses to listening to the breathing sounds, it's very realistic to what we'd come encounter in a clinical, a real situation.""It's an environment to make mistakes without harming the patient," says fellow student Deanne Murray. "We get to see a lot of things and see how situations can pan out. So it's a safe environment."The HOC also made several changes to make sure their students learn in a safe environment. All theory classes have moved online, and in-person labs are restricted to just a few students at a time. The new buildings also have touchless sinks and hand sanitizer stations.Like all schools in San Diego County, the HOC shut down in March at the start of the Pandemic. But, since the need for healthcare workers rose as the virus spread, they worked with County Health Officials to get special permission to resume classes. 288 students went back to class in June to finish the spring semester. This fall, a record of 455 students enrolled."There's fulfillment for them," says HOC Director Heather Peterson. "They're able to not only help immediately in this pandemic situation, but they really are part of a field where the labor market needs are immense."A majority of the new students were left unemployed by the Coronavirus. This new technology and in-person learning can help them find a new job in just one semester.Training new healthcare employees is vital, and not just because of the Pandemic. The US Department of Labor says demand for healthcare workers will increase by 23% between 2016 and 2026."People have lost jobs, and maybe this is a tremendous opportunity and time for them to go get some training they always thought about.
