The term "money laundering" was never more appropriate than this week, when Dutch police found around 0,000 stuffed inside the drum of a washing machine.A man present in the house during Monday's raid was arrested on suspicion of -- yes, you've guessed it -- money laundering.Authorities were checking for unregistered residents in western Amsterdam when they found the load."The municipal administration revealed that no one lived at the address," the police told CNN in a statement. "When the police did a search through the house they found €350,000 hidden in the washing machine."The police also confiscated several mobile phones, a firearm and a money-counting machine during the raid. The suspect, who is 24 years old, has not been named. The police news release included a picture of bundles of €20 and €50 bills crammed into the washing machine. They said in a statement that the raid was part of an investigation into "housing fraud, money laundering and other [signs] of crime." 997

The Sinclair Broadcast Group acquisition of Tribune Media is dead.Tribune said in a statement Thursday that it has terminated its merger agreement with Sinclair, scuttling a .9 billion deal that would have given the broadcasting group an even broader reach into American living rooms. The breakup of the deal is a stinging defeat for Sinclair, owner of dozens of local television stations. Sinclair has been scrutinized for its ties to the Trump administration.Tribune had been expected to walk away after the deal came under scrutiny from US regulators. The FCC in July referred the merger to an administrative judge hearing, and called into question whether some of Sinclair's proposed divestments were a "sham."Tribune said it will sue Sinclair for breach of contract, arguing Sinclair's negotiations with the US Justice Department and FCC were "unnecessarily aggressive. Sinclair also refused to sell certain stations that would have helped the deal secure regulatory approval, Tribune claims."Our merger cannot be completed within an acceptable timeframe, if ever," said Tribune CEO Peter Kern in a statement.Analysts expect Tribune to seek another buyer.Sinclair did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside business hours. 1259

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces have detained a US citizen who had been fighting with ISIS in Syria, a US military official told CNN Thursday. The official added that it appeared that the American citizen surrendered to Kurdish elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces.A spokesperson for the US-led coalition fighting ISIS would not confirm that a US citizen was in the custody of the SDF, referring questions to the US State Department."We have seen those same reports and the SDF as our partner has taken an oath to make sure that any fighters that they capture that they maintain them and bring them to the proper authorities. In this case the proper authorities would be the equivalent of the department of state in the country," Col. Ryan Dillon told reporters at the Pentagon via a video conference from Baghdad."If this was a US citizen it would be the Department of State to find out the updates on that particular person," Dillon added.A State Department official told CNN that the department was aware of the reports but said that they "have no information to share at this time."The Justice Department and the FBI also declined to comment. The Daily Beast was first to report that a US citizen had been detained by the SDF.This isn't the first US citizen fighting for ISIS to be detained by US allies in the region. In March 2016 a US citizen was captured in Iraq by US-backed Kurdish Peshmerga forces. The number of US citizens traveling to Iraq and Syria to join ISIS is thought to be much smaller than other countries and regions such as Western Europe and coalition officials have noted that far fewer foreign fighters have joined ISIS in recent months as the terror group suffers set-backs on the battle field.ISIS' recent defeats have also caused an increase in the number of fighters surrendering to the SDF with Dillon telling reporters that five ISIS fighters, including a local commander, had surrendered this week alone.The-CNN-Wire 1966

The U.S. surpassed the 14 million mark in confirmed cases of COVID-19 Thursday and set new records in both daily recorded cases and daily deaths as the country delves deeper into the bleakest stretch of the pandemic. On Thursday alone, Johns Hopkins says that the U.S. reported 2,879 deaths linked to COVID-19, and 217,664 more people were confirmed to have contracted the virus.Thursday marked the second straight day that the U.S. set a record in daily reported deaths. According to Johns Hopkins, at least 2,500 people have died of COVID-19 in the last three days.Thursday also marked a new record in daily reported cases of the coronavirus and the third day in the last week that the U.S. had reported more than 200,000 cases. Finally, Thursday marked an entire month (from Nov. 3 to Dec. 3) of at least 100,000 new cases of COVID-19 each day. Between Oct. 30 and today, more than 5 million Americans have contracted COVID-19 ¡ª a figure that represents 36 percent of all cases that have been recorded since the pandemic began. And as dire as the situation is today, health experts only expect the virus to spread further in the coming days. Millions of people boarded an airplane to travel this weekend, and health experts say the spread that occurred during the Thanksgiving holiday is just now being recorded in tests.Deaths are also a lagging statistic, meaning those figures will likely rise in the coming weeks. And with many hospitals already at capacity ¡ª the COVID Tracking Project reports that an all-time high 100,000 Americans across the country are fighting the virus in a hospital ¡ª some health care facilities may be forced to turn patients away. 1673
