(KGTV) ¨C Federal investigators are continuing to look into the backgrounds and motives of the El Paso and Dayton shooting suspects to determine if the shootings were instances of hate crime that may have been inspired by the Poway synagogue shooting.<br /><br />The El Paso shooter was taken into custody after killing at least 20 at a Walmart store on Aug. 3. Investigators said the 21-year-old suspect pulled the trigger just 20 minutes after posting a racist manifesto.<br /> <br />Hours later, police in Dayton shot and killed a man who opened fire at a downtown entertainment district. Multiple people, including the gunman¡¯s sister, died at the hands of the gunman.<br /> <br />Sociologist Dr. Pete Simi studies political extremism and violence at Chapman University. He said white extremism is not what it used to be.<br /> <br /><b>RELATED: <a href="https://www.10news.com/news/national/8chan-goes-offline-after-cloudflare-pulls-support-for-website-used-by-el-paso-suspect">Online forum 8chan goes offline in light of El Paso shooting</a></b><br /><br />"At an earlier point in time, we were seeing some of these lone actors who were middle-aged or even older in some cases," Simi said. "Whereas in the last few years, we have been seeing it trend in the opposite direction. Pretty young."<br /><br />Simi also said the young, tech-savvy generation connects with like-minded people on anonymous online forums like 8chan.<br /> <br />In his manifesto published on 8Chan, the El Paso shooter posted: "In general, I support the Christchurch shooter and his manifesto. This attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas."<br /><br />Earlier this year, the suspect in the Poway synagogue shooting shared a similar message on 8chan in which he also praised the work of the New Zealand mosque shooter.<br /><br />"In some cases, they talk about is how you could've been more active, or you could've killed more people if they had done X-Y-Z," Simi said. "Or they're discussing the relative merits of this type of violence and pros and cons. It's really a cesspool environment."<br /><br />At this point, the Dayton suspect's motive has not been confirmed. But he too is a young, lone-acting shooter who wore body armor. FBI investigators are now digging into his digital background to find answers.<br /><br />"What may connect them though is there may be some kind of copycat aspect to it," Simi said.<br /><br />In light of the mass shootings, Frederick Brennan, the founder of 8chan, demanded the site be shut down.<br /><br />He said he created the website in 2013 as a free speech forum, but relinquished ownership in 2015. 2826

(KGTV) - Did NYPD use a picture of actor Woody Harrelson to catch a thief using facial recognition software?Yes.The actual security footage of a beer thief was too pixelated and produced no match in the department's facial recognition software. But since he looked like Woody Harrelson, they put a photo of the actor into the database. It produced several matches and led to an arrest. The NYPD says it never arrests someone on facial recognition alone. 462

(CNN) -- Sugar might be falling out of favor, but it's the centerpiece of a makeover of Krispy Kreme that includes a new menu and its first store redesign in a decade. The doughnut company, founded 82 years ago, debuted a new location Tuesday in North Carolina that showcases Krispy Kreme's new, extra-sweet menu. It features concoctions like doughnut-infused ice cream, milkshakes and a customizable toppings bar for the glazed doughnuts. The makeover follows rival Dunkin's debut of a modernized store and new menu items, like breakfast bowls, in a bid to attract more people. The expansion has worked and sales jumped 2.4% for the first quarter of this year. The new Krispy Kreme store, which is a half hour east of Charlotte, is framed with a "stylistic wink" to its logo on the exterior. The interior has digital menu boards and an "enhanced doughnut theater experience" that shows how the doughnuts are made and glazed on a conveyer belt. The menu is revamped. One of the new items is "scoop sandwiches," a layer of ice cream with doughnuts in it, served between a sliced doughnut that can be topped with a variety of items, like vanilla, or chocolate. New milkshakes made from the doughnut ice cream can be topped, of course, with doughnuts, as well as toppings like Oreo bits. The doughnuts themselves are getting an upgrade; customers will have the option to add five different glazes and ten toppings. The company said the design is coming at a time of growth for the once-struggling chain. It plans to open 450 shops globally by the end of 2022. Of those, 45 new shops will be in the United States within the next year.Krispy Kreme will also remodel its 350 stores in the United States. But each store might not be as elaborate as its North Carolina store because menu items and store features will vary depending on location and store size.Krispy Kreme is building a new location in New York's Times Square. It will be open 24 hours a day and include a glaze waterfall. It's scheduled to open early next year. The doughnut chain went private in 2016 when JAB Holdings bought it for .35 billion. The parent company, which is based in Luxembourg, was recently embroiled in controversy after it was discovered that the family that owns it said their Nazi ancestors used slave labor during World War II.The Reimann family, which owns the controlling stake in JAB Holdings, said it donated €10 million, or million, to a yet-undisclosed charity after a three-year investigation that it commissioned discovered details of their ancestors' behavior.JAB Holdings also owns Panera Bread, Pret A Manger and Einstein's Bagels. 2633
