An early analysis of census data shows California and New York may lose a seat in the House, while Florida would gain two. This could mean Florida in the near future would have more electoral votes than New York.The analysis was done by William Frey, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, a nonprofit public policy organization, based on population estimates from mid-2020 released by the Census Bureau.Frey said the estimates released by the Census Bureau show that between July 2019 and July 2020, the population in the U.S. grew by .35%. That’s the lowest annual population growth rate since the turn of the last century, and that could mean the decade 2010-2020 may have the lowest decade growth rate in centuries.This low rate of growth and some “educated estimates” from Frey on new state-level data, could mean that seven states gain representatives in Congress and ten states lose some.One result of the Census is calculating the number of seats in the House of Representatives a state should have. Every decade, the Census Bureau adjusts the number of seats each state receives based on changes in population, the process is called reapportionment.Frey estimates that Texas will gain three representatives in the House, Florida wil gain two, and Arizona, Montana, Colorado, North Carolina and Oregon will gain one. Meanwhile, Alabama, California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Rhode Island could all lose one representative, according to Frey’s estimates.Changing the number of seats in the House also changes how many votes the state gets in the Electoral College; electoral votes are the number of seats a state has in the House plus two senators.California currently has 55 electoral votes, with the next highest as Texas with 38 votes currently. New York and Florida are next, with 29 each; if New York were to lose one and Florida gain two, it would be the first time Florida had more votes than New York and would make Florida the third most represented state in the House.“This reapportionment will also affect the Electoral College in future presidential elections. There are a mix of “red” and “blue” states among those gaining and losing seats. Thus, it is difficult to predict how these changes will benefit future Republican and Democratic presidential candidates,” Frey wrote in his analysis.Frey’s estimates are based on early data shared by the Census Bureau. An 8-year-old girl in Florida was seriously injured when a massive tree limb fell on her Monday, as she was playing in a school playground during recess.Patricia Whidden suffered a fractured skull when the limb fell on her, dropping from a live oak at Edward Upthegrove Elementary School in LaBelle."It's an extremely tragic incident, and we are investigating," said Lucinda Kelley, deputy superintendent of Hendry County District Schools.Patricia's aunt Kristi Whidden said her niece has bleeding and swelling of the brain, and is recovering at a hospital in Delray Beach."Right now, she's being kept sedated to give her brain and body a chance to recover," Kristi Whidden said.Live oak trees form a canopy over many schools in Hendry County. Kelley said she believes the limb that fell on Patricia was a freak accident, although the LaBelle area did sustain a lot of damage from Hurricane Irma last fall."The limb that fell did not appear to be, at first glance, related to that," Kelley said. "We are going to ask for the help of an expert arborist to come in and examine all of the trees."In the meantime, the the school district has closed playground where Patricia was hurt. Although sedated, Kristi said her niece did wake up at one point during the night, and was able to respond to questions with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down."Right now, the focus is on Patricia and getting her through this," she said. "A lot of people have sent their prayers and positive vibes."Upthegrove Elementary is organizing a sock hop fundraiser to help Patricia's family with expenses. An armed robber at a south side Chicago hot dog stand accidentally shot himself in the genitals during his escape, according to the Chicago Tribune.According to the Tribune, 19-year-old Terrion Pouncy robbed the Original Maxwell Street Polish around 6 a.m. Tuesday.As he ran away, Pouncy tried to put the gun in his pants. It went off, according to the Tribune, shooting him in the genitals and the thigh. He eventually called 911 to report he had been shot.He was taken to the hospital and charged with two counts of armed robbery with a firearm. 570

AMES, N.Y. -- In the tiny village of Ames, New York, new homeowners unearthed a secret history that sounds too far-fetched for reality.Nick Drummond and Patrick Bakker are the owners of the Bootlegger Bungalow. They have been living in the rural home for about a year. They were told it was built by a bootlegger, but they didn’t believe it until their recent renovation brought out the truth.“I was in the process of removing this rotted wood skirting that went around the mudroom sort of where the foundation would be if it was a truly finished structure, and as I’m peeling back the boards on one of the sides, all of the sudden all this hay falls out and I was very confused," Drummond said. "And at first I was like ‘oh this must be insulation’ – of course all this is taking place within a few seconds in my head – and then I look and I’m like ‘well wait a second, what’s that glass thing?'""And then I pull it up and I’m looking at this old liquor bottle, and then I’m looking at the other package and there’s these other little tops poking out of the hay, and then I look back at the wall and there’s like the edge of this other package tied up with string and I’m like ‘holy crap, this is like a stash of booze,’” Drummond said.Sixty-six bottles of Gaelic whisky from the prohibition era were hidden for nearly a century within the walls and floorboards of a little shack tacked onto the side of the house, originally used as a mudroom to store coats and shoes.“It was like you found the jackpot," Bakker said. "Like this is what you always want to find in a house.”The bootlegger who lived there was Count Adolf Humpfner. According to newspapers of the time, he was the talk of the town and involved in a lot of scandal. Ya know it’s fantastic, I love it, I love thinking about that.”As they continue renovating the house, Drummond and Bakker say they want to preserve its incredible history.“Every building has a story to tell," Drummond said. "And it’s really a matter of peeling back all the different parts and pieces and sort of analyzing them.
