SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The White House insisted Thursday that the CDC and the public will continue to have access to hospital data related to the COVID-19 pandemic, trying to quell concerns after the Trump administration directed a private technology firm to collect hospital data instead of the nation’s premier public health agency.Since March, the CDC has been collecting data from hospitals on bed space, COVID tests and other key metrics, like the availability of personal protective equipment, ventilators, and certain drugs.White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Thursday the CDC-run system, the National Healthcare Safety Network, was only capturing 81 percent of the nation’s hospitals.She said the new system, run by TeleTracking Technologies, will provide a more complete picture with faster reporting to the White House Coronavirus Task Force. In some cases, hospitals manually input information to the federal database. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The two brothers convicted of killing their parents at their Beverly Hills mansion have been reunited in prison, according to the Associated Press.A spokesperson for the corrections department says 47-year-old Erik Menendez has moved into the same housing unit as his 50-year-old brother, Lyle Menendez.Both brothers are serving life sentences for shooting and killing their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989.Officials say Lyle was moved from Mule Creek State Prison to San Diego’s R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility in February, where his brother has been held in a separate unit since 2013. Wednesday, Erik moved into the same facility, where inmates interact in rehabilitation programs. The brothers can now spend time together during meal time and recreational periods. Each of the brothers has served time at three other state prisons. The brothers claim the murders happened after they were sexually abused by their father. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The woman accused of killing another driver in a wrong-way crash while drunk on a San Diego freeway last year changed her plea Friday.Lauren Ashley Freeman pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury in the Feb. 26, 2018 collision that killed 35-year-old Justin Callahan.Freeman's plea dismisses a murder charge. She is scheduled to be sentenced to 11 years and 8 months in prison at a September hearing.RELATED: CHP reverses blame in fatal wrong-way crash on I-5 rampInitially, Callahan was deemed responsible for the crash. The position of his Volkswagen Jetta after the crash led CHP officers to believe he was at fault. But California Highway Patrol investigators reversed their findings after Callahan's family refuted the claim and the case was re-opened. Freeman was charged with causing the fatal crash in November.Callahan was driving to his Ocean Beach home from work in Chula Vista when the crash occurred on a transition ramp from northbound Interstate 5 and westbound I-8 just before 2 a.m.The 35-year-old died at the scene, while Freeman and a passenger in her Toyota Camry sustained major injuries.
