The pandemic has exposed a long-standing problem across the county: a lack of internet access in homes. And for most families, the switch to virtual learning came without warning. "Yes, there was an announcement, and my initial thought was not fear, more of daunting. I was overwhelmed," said San Diego mother Paula Gosswiller. Because for Gosswiller, it meant having to convert her kitchen into a classroom for five. Ranging from ages 5 to 13, all of her school-aged kids are in different grades."We did not have internet at the time in our house, and just the thought of homeschooling without internet or technology was daunting," said Gosswiller.The kids attend St. Ritas Catholic School in southeast San Diego, which was able to secure enough devices for each student before the school year, thanks to a donation. When school went virtual, they deployed the iPads and Chromebooks to students in need."The inconsistency of internet and things like that, really made it challenging for a lot of our families," said Principal Gina Olsen. Olsen says nearly half of the students needed to borrow a device when the school went virtual. She says they were also grateful to receive a grant from the Southeastern San Diego COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund, to help cover missed tuition payments for students. Like many families, the Gosswiller's were forced to add an internet bill to their list of expenses, but not all can afford to do this."I think the statistics are something like 1 in 4 kids in the U.S. don't have access to WiFi at home. Before the pandemic, they could stay after school, they could go to a library, maybe a McDonald's parking lot or a Starbucks," said Angela Baker, who runs corporate responsibility at Qualcomm.Located in San Diego, the tech giant Qualcomm helped turned our cellphones into smartphones with its modem chips. Now, they're putting some of that technology into computers."With people getting so used to their smartphones, and the experience of always being on, great battery life, being able to use it anywhere you are, no matter where you are, we kind of took that concept and applied it to the PC market," said Pete Lancia, who runs external communications at Qualcomm. With help from manufacturing partners, Qualcomm built computers with cellular connectivity that don't require WiFi to get online. They donated 900 to students in the San Diego Unified School District."We really need to make sure that kids have access to broadband at speeds that will let them do their homework, watch videos, see the instruction if that's being done, now that we know so many schools are probably going to be online," said Baker. The name change for Boy Scouts of America is creating a buzz online as people react the organization's recent move to become more inclusive.They will begin calling the program for ages 11 to 17 "Scouts BSA."It was a historic decision for Boy Scouts of America as they take the next step towards allowing females into all their programs with their focus on bringing families together in one spot. It's all a part of the new "Scout Me In"?recruitment campaign, uniting girls and boys of the same family with one organization."Having Johnny in Scouts and Sally in soccer or some other activities — if they can go and do things together as a family unit, that's what families are looking for from the research we have," says Chris Mehaffey, scout executive and CEO of the Mid-America Council. And so the move was made today, switching the Boy Scouts program to Scouts BSA with the hopes that the new name will make girls feel comfortable joining the program geared towards 11-18 year olds.Still Mehaffey believes the name switch won't make a huge difference in girls joining the scouts. "I think those that are interested in our program will come anyway, this just shows that we are being more inclusive to what demographics we'll be serving."As for the Girl Scouts, they're remaining focused on creating programs for girls, and only girls. "So it's not changing the way we deliver our mission and programs. We're going to continue to do what girls asked us to do and provide for their changing needs," says Melissa Breazile, marketing director of Girl Scouts of Nebraska.And if girls desire, Mehaffey says girls can choose to join both organizations. "You don't have to choose. Girl Scouts meet on different nights, Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA meet on different nights, if you're interested in both if parents will allow, do both."Now this switch only affects the Boy Scout program. The pandemic has resulted in a major increase in donated items, so the selection at stores like Goodwill is better than ever before.Families that are trying to make ends meet are benefiting a lot from this surge in donations."It’s not just a little bit. It’s carloads of donations," said Goodwill store manager Sarah Guthrie. "It’s just been crazy. Donation after donation. The first weekend I was here, we did over 1,000 donations between Saturday and Sunday. It's about a car for every 12 seconds."Guthrie has been store manager at the Castle Rock, Colorado, Goodwill location for about a month and a half. She's seen the same thing just about every day since."Right now, our donation center starts at 10 a.m., but starting around 9:15 or so, we start getting cars in our line and a lot of times it’ll wrap all the way around the building and into the street," said Guthrie.They see car after car of people dropping off bags of things they no longer need."Spring cleaning has taken on a whole new meaning this year," said Goodwill Industries International CEO Steve Preston.He says this isn’t just unique to this one store. Donations are up across the country where stores are open, which means now is the time to go shopping for a bargain."That is the logical connection. So, when we get a lot of great donations coming in, it is a super time to hit the store because our category is called “Treasure Hunting”, category in retail, and there are just a ton of treasures in there because so many people have been bringing in those donations," said Preston.Some stores are seeing an increase of up to 50% in donations, and they’re having a hard time storing it in their stores."Many of our local stores are renting additional warehouse space.
