Thirteen days before the 2020 presidential election, former President Barack Obama arrived on the campaign trail in the Keystone State of Pennsylvania on Wednesday to lend a hand to his former Vice President Joe Biden. The stalwart and arguably most popular figure of the Democratic Party is hoping to lend his esteem among Democrats to push them to the polls for Biden. Opinion polls are showing a slight lead for Biden in Pennsylvania, and the state could end up being the keystone to reaching 270 Electoral College votes.Obama delivered a fiery rebuke of President Donald Trump, going after his leadership amid the coroanvirus pandemic, and his plans to eliminate the Affordable Care Act. "Where is this great plan to replace Obamacare? They’ve had 10 years to do it. There is no plan," Obama said. Pennsylvania played an important role in 2016 in sending Trump to the White House; Trump won the state by .6%. Trump was the first Republican presidential candidate to win the state since 1988, but the state has been hotly contested in tight elections. In 2004, John Kerry won Pennsylvania by just 2%, while Al Gore won the state by 4% in 2000.The former president had approval ratings well above those of Biden and Trump when he left office. In January 2017, Obama had a 59% approval rating nationally, according to Gallup. A year later, Gallup conducted a retrospective job approval rating, which gave him a 63% approval rating. By comparison, Trump has a 43% approval rating, according to Gallup; Biden has a 46% favorability rating.Due to the coronavirus, Wednesday’s rally was a drive-in, with supporters socially distanced.Joining Obama was a number of prominent Philadelphia-area Democrats, including Gov. Tom Wolf.Obama’s visit to Philadelphia comes less than 24 hours following Trump’s stop in Erie, Pennsylvania. The Biden campaign announced late Wednesday evening that Obama will once again be back on the campaign trail on Saturday with a visit to Miami. While Biden took the day from the campaign trail to prepare for Thursday's debate, Trump campaigned in North Carolina. 2093

Transportation officials are warning of what they call a "death spiral" if public transit does not get the federal funding it needs to stay afloat.Ridership has fallen by 90 percent since the pandemic as departments find themselves strapped for cash.“Without transit, there is no economic recovery,” said Corinne Kisner, executive director of the National Association of Transportation Officials (NACTO).The American Public Transportation Association estimates 36 million Americans relied on public transportation in 2019, with about 36 percent of that servicing essential workers, according to the advocacy group TransitCenter.“The reality is that transit agencies are in an existential crisis,” said Kisner.Once ridership dropped across the country, public transportation departments saw their revenues plummet. Beth Osborne with Transportation for America, a public advocacy group, says aside from ride fares most transit money comes from sales tax, which also took a hit when the economy shut down.“It really does have tentacles that affect so much of our economy, of our health, of recovery and getting through this,” said Osborne. In San Francisco, the revenue drop has led to Bay Area Rapid Transit dropping more than 50 percent of its service. The story is similar for most major city transit systems.“We’re really limping along and hoping Congress will approve more funding for us,” said Jim Allison, spokesman for BART. “We’re doing what we can to try and get essential workers to and from where they need to go, but beyond that, it’s not much of a service compared to what we used to provide.”The billion in CARES Act funding alleviated some woes early on, but officials estimate billion more is needed to make it through the end of the year, and right now, no package is in place. If departments don’t find an answer, NACTO says 30,000 jobs could be lost because of stalled capital improvement projects.A lacking service could also mean a life or death scenario for more than just transit departments.“We need people to get tested,” said Osborne. “In many places, they have said they will not test anyone who does not arrive in a car. Well, there are a lot of people who don’t have one.” 2213

There have been several mass shootings this year, and people are still trying to figure out ways to prevent them from happening. The latest shooting occurred at a Madden 19 game tournament in Jacksonville, Florida. The attack left two dead and nine others are still recovering from gunshot wounds. So far this year, there have been 8 notable mass shootings. So, what’s being done? The federal government has not passed any major gun legislation in more than a dozen years. Action has been mostly on the state and local levels. On Monday, California lawmakers approved a trio of bills to reduce the number of people with firearm access, including lifetime bans for people convicted of domestic violence or individuals placed on involuntary psychiatric holds twice in one year.Florida also tightened gun controls, by raising the age to purchase a firearm to 21 and banning bump stock. In Connecticut, the governor signed a bill banning bump stocks. Deerfield, Illinois banned assault weapons, within city limits, and in New Jersey, it’s required that therapists and counselors alert law enforcement if a patient has threatened serious violence against themselves or others. Their right to buy a gun can then be revoked. The battle continues to wage on how to handle these types of shootings, but so far, there appears to be no federal push to make major changes, leaving efforts up to states and cities.  1414

This Thanksgiving is shaping up to be like no other. With the U.S. experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising Americans to celebrate turkey day with the people they live with, as opposed to traditional feasts with extended family and friends. With many people celebrating the holiday is small groups, it may be easier and more cost efficient to order takeout or ready-made meals this year. Not only could ordering in save you money and work, it may also serve as an opportunity to support the restaurant industry that has been hit so hard by the pandemic, especially small establishments. The business could help them make up for lost revenue. A survey released by National Restaurant Association in September found that 1 in 6 restaurants was closed either permanently or long-term, nearly 3 million workers were out of work, and the industry was on track to lose 0 billion in sales by the end of 2020.There are endless options for takeout for your Thanksgiving meal. You could celebrate with any cuisine, but if you want to stick to traditional foods, some national chains are offering turkey day dinners. Here are a few:Denny’s – The restaurant is offering a family-style “Turkey & Dressing Dinner Pack” that can be picked up until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25.Cracker Barrel – Like in years past, the chain is offering meals for gatherings of all sizes, including its “Thanksgiving Heat n’ Serve Family Dinner.”Boston Market – This chain may also be an option, as it serves up plated meals, family meals, whole pies and hot side dishes.Offers.com also compiled a list of more than 30 restaurant chains that are open on Thanksgiving.Regardless of where you order from, consider leaving a tip for the restaurant employees who are not only working on Thanksgiving, but also in the midst of a pandemic. 1876
