JINAN, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- A rural endowment insurance scheme, which is being operated on trial basis in part of the country's rural area, may bring an end to the tradition of rural seniors who depend on their children for financial support.Under the insurance scheme introduced in September last year, farmers across the country, who aged 60 years or older, each can receive a pension of 55 yuan (8.3 U.S. dollars) paid by the government per month."I never dreamed I would receive a pension like urban residents do," said Liu Fengyan from Nanlin Village, Pingyi County, in east China's Shandong Province."My wife and I receive 110 yuan in total each month and that is enough to subsidize our daily expenses," Liu told reporters.Liu, together with hundreds of thousands of other elderly rural Chinese across China, is one of the first to benefit from the insurance scheme.The Chinese government has vowed to expand the scheme 10 percent per year and cover the whole country by the year 2020.Those under the age of 60 will have to pay 100 to 800 yuan per year into a fund so they can draw the pension once they hit 60 years of age."Farmers are enthusiastic about the program, and nearly 90 percent of farmers in the pilot areas in Shandong have joined the scheme," said Liu Qianjin, deputy director of the Rural Social Insurance Department of the Shandong Provincial Human Resources and Social Security Bureau.Previous pension programs that were not widely accepted because their funding came from the farmers themselves. BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- China has sent three warships to escort a Chinese cargo ship that had been attacked earlier by pirates in the Arabian Sea near Oman, the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center (CMSRC) said Sunday.Twenty-one crew members, all Chinese nationals, have now been accounted for aboard the Taishankou.The center said the crew hid in a safety compartment when the pirates boarded the ship. It did not mention any injuries among crew members.The center received a call for help from the Taishankou at 4:40 p.m. (Beijing Time) Saturday. Chinese warships assigned to escort duties in the Gulf of Aden rendezvoused with the Taishankou at 8:44 a.m. Sunday.Additionally, the CMSRC advised vessels to pay more attention to safety since the area reported a recent increase in pirate attacks.This followed another Chinese ship, the Lecong, being attacked by pirates in the northern Indian Ocean Thursday. One of the 26 crew members aboard the Lecong was injured during a battle with the pirates.The Lecong is now sailing toward Oman under the escort of a Chinese warship, according to a report in Sunday's People's Liberation Army Daily.The injured crew member was reported to have suffered a wound and infection, though his medical condition was reported as stable.

China's disabled population exceeds 83 million. Li called for more efforts to care for the disabled in a bid to improve their quality of life.Further, the vice premier said the country would improve laws and regulations regarding the disabled and increase support of policies and fund input to serve the disabled population in better ways.Better services for disabled people would include improving the quality of public services, making more areas handicapped accessible, and assisting the needy and safeguarding their rights and interests in a bid to solving difficulties in their living, studying, and medical requirements, Li said.The expo, organized by the China Disabled Persons' Federation and the General Office of the National Aging Committee, brought together more than 200 manufacturers from 17 countries and regions, according to statistics released by the organizing committee.
