SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Saturday, San Diego County reported a record 1,478 new coronavirus cases and six additional deaths, bringing the county's totals to 70,709 cases and 966 fatalities.Saturday's new cases yielded a 7% positivity rate out of 21,947 tests reported. The new daily case report marks the third time in a week that the county has reported more than 1,000 new cases. It was also the 11th-straight day the county reported at least 600 new cases.Eleven new community outbreaks were also confirmed on Friday: Three in business settings, three in faith-based settings, two in childcare settings, one in a TK-12 school setting, one in a restaurant/bar setting, and one in a gym setting. A community outbreak is three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the last two weeks.County businesses saw purple tier restrictions go into effect on Saturday, further limiting reopening of the county due to the surge in coronavirus cases seen over the last couple of weeks.California's limited stay-at-home order is also set to begin Saturday night, limiting non-essential businesses between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. for one month in counties under the state's purple tier.County public health officials are worried that fatigue is setting in on San Diegans and urged residents to avoid large gatherings this week for Thanksgiving,"The virus is widespread and every element of our community is impacted," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Now more than ever it is vital that San Diegans avoid gatherings and crowds, wear a face covering when they are out in public and stay home if they are sick."Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 continues to rise as well, with 440 hospitalized and 127 in intensive care. Those numbers are nearly double the amount recorded a month ago.The county is reminding residents that gatherings should be limited to three households, held outdoors if possible, and be two hours or less. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld's new dive coaster has shed its "Mako" moniker and will now nod to another of the park's coolest animals.SeaWorld announced Tuesday its dive coaster will be called "Emperor," a nod to Emperor penguins. The name is "a tribute to the Emperor penguins’ journey from chilly, frosted cliffs to their deep dive into the depths of the ocean," the park says.The ride will still be modeled after SeaWorld's other "Mako" coasters, taking riders more than 150 feet high, before sending them into a 143-foot face-down drop and through loops and turns at up to 60 miles per hour. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego veterans from WWII and the Korean War are getting ready for a special trip. This weekend they'll board an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.10News is getting exclusive access to the trip and was at Honor Flight San Diego's last planning meeting before the special weekend gets off the ground. David Smith, Founder of Honor Flight San Diego, says it's incredibly important to thank our veterans while there's still time. The oldest veteran on this weekend's flight will be 99-years-old. "I've actually had veterans come up to me and say, 'ya know, in all these years no one has ever said thank you to me - this means so much'," said Smith.The group relies on fundraising to make the honor flight a reality - it costs 0,000 for the entire weekend.Our coverage of the Honor Flight continues Friday morning when Reporter Amanda Brandeis boards the plane with the veterans and will continue through Sunday when they all return to San Diego. Honor Flight San Diego welcomes the community to join the Sunday's homecoming at the San Diego International Airport. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based Helix has new FDA Emergency approval for its COVID-19 test that will make getting a test easier.The test is now approved for self-administration and for asymptomatic people to take.That means testing sites can give more tests without having to increase their staffing levels."It simplifies the collection," says Dr. James Lu, the President of Helix. "You can do it without having to have another person watching you."The test is also much simpler than the traditional upper nasal swab, as it only requires the lower area of the nostril to be swabbed."It actually just goes into the anterior narrows of the nostril area, and you just rotate it five times in each nostril," says Dr. Lu."It can be totally done by yourself, is completely painless, and it takes less than 30 seconds."RELATED: University City lab switches gears to create COVID-19 testsHowever, unlike home-pregnancy tests or DNA swab kits, Dr. Lu says Helix's COVID test still needs to be done in a clinical setting, so medical professionals can report the results and advise patients after they get results."We still think it's essential to have a physician in the loop, particularly for those cases where you do have positives," says Dr. Lu. "Those patients do need to be reported, and also make sure they have the right guidance in terms of quarantine."The simpler, self-administered swab could also make people more likely to get tested since they don't have to go through the old way of testing, which involved a swab shoved all the way up their nasal cavity.More testing also means more people will know if they're sick even if they don't have symptoms. That will make it easier for businesses and schools to reopen in the future."We believe that accurate and easily available, fast turnaround testing is essential to controlling the disease," says Dr. Lu. "And it's essential for identifying individuals who are sick or potentially spreaders so they can quarantine."Helix plans to make 100,000 of the newly approved tests every day.
